This mix was planned with a distinct focus on Tech Trance, but it wasn’t long before I realized that I went off-track. As a result, I decided to put the ‚Trance‘ label on it: playing it safe. ‚Officially‘ and according to government regulations, we do have 3 Tech, 3 Prog, 1 Hard Trance and 7 Trance tracks. I’m pretty sure that if you’re into tech or prog, your going to like this one anyway.
Behind the scenes: a few tracks do exhibit some weird mastering straight out of the box, causing the RMS to go up briefly but noticeably. I tried to keep it in check but then again, I value the original intention of the composer and my goal is to preserve it as best as possible. Some of the songs included already have quite a few years under their belt while mixing and mastering habits change over time. So, one has to make compromises here and there.

175 BPM Newstyle Hardcore mix - been wanting to do something like this since 1994 and well, here it is, at the end of 2018 *g*. There really is an old school rave vibe to it as the overall theme is not as dark as regular hardcore. It just happened and wasn’t planned at all. But I’m happy that it did turn out this way, as it’s a better representation of my ambition to catch up on a missed opportunity (see below). I’ll deliver some more sinister and evil mixes (haha) in the future. Stay tuned if you’re interested in that. Playlist finished already...
This whole thing has a backstory of sorts: Hardcore / Gabber CDs were among my first purchases of electronic music. Even the mainstream event ‘Mayday’ that was very popular back in the early 90s had a very rave and hardcore techno oriented lineup. The official compilations did not truly reflect this however. But that’s just a side note.
So, while I was a fan of the (in)famous Thunderdome series, I never happened to buy just one vinyl record of that genre when I was a DJ from 97 to 00. I was still fond of the music, but all the colleagues and acquaintances with whom I was hanging out with at the time were very much opposed to the whole thing and thought of it as music for little kids and white trash. To top things off, there wasn’t just one club anywhere within a 150km radius where I could have played music like this. To focus my resources, I never bought related records, never got close to recording a mix.

But now, 25 years after I purchased my first Thunderdome CD and grew fond of the genre, I finally managed to come up with a proper DJ mix. Some things take quite a while to materialize, eh?

It’s also very peculiar that the genre itself hasn’t changed that much. The ‘kiddy’ music is still alive and the Disco House that my acquaintances favored is pretty much dead as of now. As is German Hard Trance. Well, both had very strong influence of German artists and with the decline of electronic music and it’s club scene in Germany, the genres vanished as well. The Netherlands just do it better (with some support from Italy and the UK, plus the occasional exotic thrown into the fray). I hope they are going to keep Hardstyle up and running for a long time to come, too.
Either way, fantastic job NL! Let’s work hard on that the beats will never go silent.

136 BPM mix. Pushy and energetic trance tunes. Despite the use of modern tracks, it's pretty much the exact same style that I used to play in the 1990s. Bit of an underground / darker vibe to it, mostly instrumental, not too mainstream, maybe a tad progressive. Back then, we used to call it Hard Trance, but nowadays, this description is used way differently.

I would really appreciate some feedback. Be it on the tracks, the mix or whatever is on your mind. Feel free to share as to keep electronic music afloat. Of course, a sub would be nice as well. Whatever you do, keep on rocking! Over and out!

138 BPM. Uptempo Tech Trance mix with the occasional Tech House and Trance track. Let’s not be too strict with the genre boundaries. It’s been a while since the last mix of that genre, but since I already got the playlist down for the next one, the time between should be a little shorter. Given the long duration of my mixes and the rather lengthy mastering and video editing, it simply takes some time to build a small library when there are alternating styles as well.

Got any suggestions for amazing artists or bomb tracks that I didn’t include as of yet? Leave a comment and I’ll try to include your fav tracks in the future.

My main tool is still djay Pro for iPad. It’s pretty good but believe me, the touch screen is driving me crazy sometimes when faders or buttons don’t react at all. That never happened with physical equipment back in the day. The thing that annoys me most though are the non linear filters and effects that tend to tilt hard at a certain point. Of course this point isn’t marked and since it’s touch screen, it’s difficult to get a feeling for it since it’s all virtual. Well, still amazing what you can do nowadays with just an app.

150 BPM. More raw style than usual, but still a healthy mashup of euphoric and raw. Not much opportunity to catch your breath: just keep on moving! I think this is also the premiere of Japanese Hardstyle for my mixtapes. They do have a different, distinct style. That’s one reason why I opted to put them at the end, as they are difficult to integrate. This, and the fact that REUNION actually does a very good job as a closing song.
I also like track no. 10 “Mellow”. The original from 1996, “Have you ever been mellow?” by the “Party Animals” was on heavy rotation for me back in the day. The music video was also very nice as they didn’t try to tell a story, limiting themselves to include a lot of club footage, which I always preferred to all that tacked on stuff that didn’t feel right anyway. Isn’t the whole thing about partying in the first place?
Especially during the late 90s, Trance music videos got quite elaborate but ultimately, most of them went down the same kind of avenue and were just exquisite boredom. Well, guess that got fixed along the way, right?

128 BPM - mixed with djay Pro for iPad. This one actually has some really nice and long mixes / transitions. Almost felt like mixing techno. Mastering was a bit tricky once again due to this, but I think the results are OK nonetheless. Every vid is a valuable step in my ongoing and epic fight against perfectionism, *g*.
Anyway, I also put in some mild Vocal Trance as seasoning, but since they called it “progressive mix”, don’t point fingers at me haha.
A more serious remark before I’m done with description:
Since I started putting the national flags next to the artist names, I can’t help but to feel a bit depressed at how much Germany has lost ground as far as EDM is concerned. And no, I’m not biased as I’m not selecting my tracks due to nationality or whatever. For like 75% of the artists, I have to look it up.

146 BPM. Mixed with djay Pro for iPad. First mix with what can be called Hard Trance nowadays. As you can see, it’s mostly U.K. based. German Hard Trance is pretty much dead as of now. Which is a pity, but hey, we got Hardstyle instead, which acts as the spiritual successor to my favorite genre of yesteryear. So, I guess it could be worse.

And once more, I had to think of new visuals as my ancient PC cannot even record video in a straight manner anymore. 60 minute recordings end up as 57 minutes video files, which make it impossible to synchronize the music with any kind of visuals. It is annoying, yes. But I cannot fault my rig for not being up to scratch anymore, as all of the components doubled or tripled their expected lifetime already.

Well, Hatsune Miku it is, then. Of course, there’s not that big of a connection between Miku and the music right here, aside from it being EDM of sorts, but bear with me for the time being. Ultimately, not everything that happens on planet earth has to make perfect sense, right? See, at least I’m not click baiting with anime (or other) girls as I’m still using my trusty logos.
I think I’m going to prepare a new pic for every 5 videos or something. There’s no shortage on anime and manga style pictures for sure, but it is quite a bit of work to set everything up. Especially, if all you have at your disposal is a tablet with apps.

150 BPM - Melodic, Euphoric as well as Rawstyle thrown together for good measure. I spent a whole lot of time on the mastering. At first you think you’re done, but suddenly a couple of days vanish while trying to polish things here and there. In the end, it will always be a compromise. I’m not 100% happy, but it’s workable. Doing this with a limited software lineup and just (albeit good) headphones is tricky. Especially with the wide range of sub genres and production dates that is typical for me. Leave your opinion on this topic, the song selection, the transitions, effects etc. if you like. Looking forward to hear from you.

So, what’s new? I had to switch the accompanying visuals as my internal PC hard disk died on me, calling for some less demanding ‚background‘ for my DJ mixes. As to not overwhelm the USB hard disk that is acting as a replacement, it will be Audacity for the time being.
Tried to do the recording on my iPad with the DJ software as well as with the Twisted Wave audio editor, but unfortunately, all screen recordings simply vanish once finished. I guess there‘s not enough disk space available, or iOS simply bugs out due to the length of the session (82+ mins).
Same old issues that have been plaguing my efforts for quite some time as I only have a 64 gig iPad. Never intended to use it for video editing and stuff, but things don’t always go as planned, requiring some improvisation along the way.

Uptempo Tech Trance Mix - 140 BPM! Still using solely djay Pro for iPad. Sorry for the long delay since the last Tech Trance upload. Really wanted to do this one sooner, but somehow distracting things kept popping up time and time again. Little low on the tribal vibes this time. Planning to include some more of those in the next one or maybe I’ll just do a full tribal set, who knows. Timespan is really huge as there’s even one track from 2001 in there.

Euphoric Hardstyle 150 BPM - mixed with djay Pro for iPad. 60 fps visualization. This video in particular was a lot of work due to a copyright issue with one of the tracks. It was (and still is) blocked worldwide and I noticed it too late, resulting in me having to redo the whole mix, the now compulsory mastering and, of course, the video itself. I changed my modus operandi as to avoid unnecessary trouble in the future. There are two new tracks to replace the troublemaker since the transitions weren’t working out as well with just a track for track exchange. Feel free to comment, like & subscribe.

The majority of the tracks are progressive Trance or House classics so I went with that. In addition, there’s your odd regular Trance tune as well as one or two Electro House tracks. I guess I will be doing more sets like this one right here in the future as Hard Trance seems to be pretty much out of business and, aside from the difference in BPM, this style comes closest to resembling it. Regular Trance is too well rounded and Tech Trance funnels the majority of it’s melodies into the breaks.

The extent of genre mashup also depends on whether I can get enough tracks from a certain BPM range. Despite the availability of key correction, I prefer to not alter playback speed by more than 3%. So that the tracks stay true to the intention of the composer / producer. What’s your opinion on the amount of mashup? Do you prefer less or more variety?

I put in a lot of effort to get some visual bling bling going for this mix but YouTube really butchered the end result since I’m still regarded as a low priority user with just getting the meh AVC codec and it’s low bitrate for all of my uploads. The original video file was of very high quality and pushed both my PC as well as my iPad to their limits. Well, I’ve been giving it my best but ultimately, it’s up to YouTube algorithms. Sorry.

One of the center pieces is surely the DJ Scot Project Remix of Cold Night. I think DJ Scot Project’s X2 (Time is now) EP was among my first vinyl discs back in the 90s and I still like his style. As usual, I also used 2-3 more Trance like tracks to get some variety in there. Marco V’s “Tolerance” was a real pain to mix - some kind of staple regarding his tracks. But since he’s been really influential for both Hard and Tech Trance alike, it’s not a good idea to omit his work just because of some inconvenience.

Last stop: Japan 11 - Incomplete patient file, wound infection 5 months post surgery

Morgan Kell 2018-03-03 | My hospital in Germany finally sent some documents, but a lot of stuff is still missing and they didn’t even bother to answer just one single question of mine. In addition, I developed a serious surgical site infection 5 months after surgery that’s keeping me busy again. Since I cannot return to that despicable hospital, I had to find another surgeon in Germany to look into this issue. Regular doctors are playing the referral game: they don’t want to have anything to do with my case. To start things off, the surgeon took samples from the wound to check for resistant bacteria and right now we are waiting for lab results. I don’t know how trustworthy he is and I’m not going to have any surgery or reopening of the wound in Germany, that’s for sure. I hope that this isn’t the beginning of the disease loop that I fear so much. Since August 2017, there was just one month worth of time where I did not require constant bandaging - now I’m back at it again.

Aside from being busy with my cancer blog I kind of withheld this recording for a while since I might have went a little overboard with the genre variety. In addition to Synthwave, there is also some Electronica / Synthpop as well as Italo Disco to be found for this recording. These songs are meant to spice things up and do not warrant any changes to the overall genre or style description. Most of these tracks do have some connection to the 80s one way or another and that’s what Synthwave is all about - at least from my point of view. Leave a comment if you would like to share your opinion on this as well.

The last track has some issues with the master tape as the pitch is somewhat inconsistent at the very start. Given the age of the track and the somewhat limited assets available back then, it’s just a mere detail since the majority of it sounds just fine in regard to the audio quality.

War Thunder AB #332 (PC) - 9 kills with Valentine Mk XI: Survivor on Poland

Morgan Kell 2018-02-07 | Survivor, Heavy Metal Fury, On Hand. Cautious gameplay on Poland with a team that, again, can only be called lackluster. At least I caught some funny wtf moments of some of my allies on video that I tried to showcase with the help of some editing.
We do manage to turn the game after what seemed to be an eternity but ultimately, it happened too late for us to have a realistic chance of winning this match. Overall this game was more entertaining than it sounds just going by the description, though. Putting aside two artillery strikes, the enemy failed to do any kind of damage to my tank or crew.

War Thunder AB #331 (PC) - 19+1 kills with T-34 1942 on Abandoned Factory

150 BPM - I guess this is my favorite genre now next to Synthwave. But other than the latter which is not really meant or built for mixing, Hardstyle feels like a time machine that transports you back into the early 90s. The songs are not as long as Trance and more diverse. This, coupled with the extensive use of vocals allows for more creative, sometimes even abrupt mixing. There’s one thing I need to mention, though. Unfortunately I only noticed it once I had everything recorded. It’s that with song number 12, Norwegian Lullaby by Da Tweekaz feat. Lene Kokai, there is a small portion where the sound is somewhat scratchy. I double and triple checked everything but it looks like they somehow did a sloppy job at voice recording or mastering. Apparently, it’s not just an issue with my own recording but with the song itself. You’ll run into it during the middle section of the song, when there’s just her voice and the piano. I reduced the overall playback level but it’s too extensive for me to fix. I repaired a lot of retro songs already that had broken samples and whatnot, but this one right here is beyond of what I can do at the moment. I hope you don’t mind.

Morgan Kell‘s Decibel Therapy Vol. 12 - Disco / Funky House

Morgan Kell 2018-01-11 | 134 BPM - Disco / Funky House: now this tape is surely not the best in terms of mixing but I really do like the song selection. I’m pretty sure that some of the tracks haven’t been used at all in other recordings throughout my archive. Some background info for this particular mix: I was scheduled to DJ at a club on the main floor. 4 to 6 hours of Trance and Techno. But less than one day prior I got a phone call in the middle of the night and got asked if I could act as a replacement for the secondary (House) floor because one DJ would be absent for whatever reason. Well I already had all my stuff together for the main floor and had to hurry up to switch everything out for House records. This tape acted as a warm up a few hours before I left for the club. At that point it had been a while since I last played House, some practice was due.
My actual DJ set on site was totally different. You can’t really prepare set lists for 6 hours or more, let alone on such short notice. In addition I had some trouble scraping together enough records in the first place. My ‘main’ style was always Trance related, Techno and House just acted as sidekicks as I could barely afford to keep my primary style up to date.

I would really like to do some new mixes but this particular style of House, which is running as Disco or Funky House nowadays, doesn’t seem to be that popular anymore. In contrast to the other styles I play I got issues getting a sufficient amount of tracks together.

I got like 3 or 4 gameplay videos left that are recorded at 30fps. Mostly from March 2017. Then there is a bunch of videos with 60fps from July. Once these are all uploaded, I hope that I’ll be in Japan, ready to record some fresh footage with the help of a new rig. I wonder if there is a lower quota of potato teams, especially regarding Ash River, on Japanese or SEA servers.

War Thunder AB #329 (PC) - M4A3E2 Jumbo engaging in close quarters combat on Poland

I think there are still like 15 gameplay videos left from when I had to stop playing at the end of July. Sorry for the overlay mess up in the upper left corner. This video was one of the first gameplay videos I did with the help of my ATI card. I used a different software- and therefor CPU-based tool before. But with the ongoing updates and graphic improvements to the game, I lost more and more fps while recording, rendering the game nearly unplayable on a couple of maps. There are some 60fps videos in store for you along the road, too.

What I’ve noticed is that the tracks by Marco V that I played up to now were all very tricky to handle, affecting both entry and exit. I can’t remember having similar difficulties back in the day with one artist in particular. Who knows, it might be on purpose by him. Maybe that’s the reason why I keep including his songs anyway, for the challenge.

Just a brief comment on that Logan Paul incident: just as I finished this video, I read about that YouTube ‘star’ and his special sort of ‘humor’. As a guy suffering from terminal cancer, who has to think about possible euthanasia options, I’m just shocked and disgusted by this. I’ll talk about this a bit more in my next video as it’s going to be a more negative one, filled with very serious problems and obstacles, with me having trouble to keep going because of the grim nature not only of my disease, but all other circumstances as well.
This ‘star’ might have indirectly vanquished my chances of getting somewhere in Japan because I’ll be reliant on the support of the Japanese Government as well as local enterprises sooner or later. It’s not too far fetched to anticipate that they will enforce a much more restrictive policy regarding folks that are planning to become a vlogger in Japan after this. It might be childish of me, but since this isn’t the first time for such ‘mishaps’ by big names in the YouTube business, I can’t help but feel really angry that people like these bath in success, popularity and financial means while serious, honest and nice folks are getting absolutely no where. And with this we are at the core of what this video is about.

I’m talking about my visual deficits due to all the diseases and disabilities that I had to gather all my life. These deficits present major obstacles in the modern world, where barely anyone invests time to get to know people anymore, where first glance impressions are decisive in almost all cases. Be it on the Internet or in real life. And this applies to friends, girlfriends, jobs and in my case, even family.

Now a lot of my issues could be fixed or at least covered up with a bit of support and financial aid. I received quite a beating already but I’m not too sick yet, there is still a chance to make up for some portions of my trashed life as I’m not expecting any miracles. So I keep on fighting, hoping. Despite all setbacks I’m still not willing to give up, but it’s getting tougher by the week.

In the past videos I concentrated mostly on material things. That was because they are easier to achieve with some support. A drivers license, a car, a small house - you can easily predict what you need to pay and do to get and hold onto them for a year, maybe two. With these prerequisites in place, I want to have one final go at social life, even girlfriends, before I’m going down. While I’m still a virgin being 37 years old, it’s not concerning me that much. I’m looking for a serious and mutual relationship. Since I lost my whole family with the breakup of my parents, I would be really happy if I would get the chance of getting accepted into a new family but I guess this will be near to impossible. This probably sounds totally crazy but that’s just the result of my past life which was and still is a sad affair at best. Now people like Logan Paul could engage in some more serious stuff like trying to lend people like me a hand, offering some guidance. But with boring endeavors like this you won’t be getting millions of views unfortunately.
Of course, social matters can’t be predicted or calculated, but due to my experiences as well as the fact that it’s my last chance now, I’ve come to the conclusion that I’ll need a couple of equalizers, some remedying factors that will lower the difficulty level in the face of my physiological drawbacks. The material things, as well as improvements to my appearance, all of them are equalizers. Means to level the playing field so that I can stop trying to scale the Olympus Mons. I’ve tried it the hard way all my life and nothing worked out ever. Thanks to my cancer I’m even more of a freak now than before. I’m going to show you some pictures and videos of what I mean in the next video.

Nowadays there is a more strict separation. At least for Techno it’s probably because a lot of DJs felt frustrated that we had no real Techno club around, so they had to play some of those records in between the Trance assortment. This is what the club scene was like back then and my own tapes reflect this.

For my second Synthwave mix there is some more genre variety. I’ve included some New Retro Wave, Synthrock and even a genuine 80s track. I think it’s a good combination that keeps things fresh. While I don’t really like to stick with just one genre or style throughout a whole mix, sometimes it’s tricky to pull off good transitions when combining different styles.

Trance combined with some Dance. At least that’s what I like to call tracks that are more mainstream than Trance. Officially, stuff like this gets mostly categorized as Euro / Progressive House nowadays. Well I dunno if I’ll adapt these terms in the future, we will see.

Ah well I think two of those transitions could have been a little better. It’s not that easy mixing with just the tinny internal speakers of my tablet. Also, I really do miss having some real faders, buttons and potentiometers. On the tablet the inputs tend to not register in like 1/10 of cases and if that happens you can throw the whole recording away. I don’t want to invest into any hardware while still in Germany, though. Can’t take that stuff with me, anyway. So please bear with me that I’m not that playful with the mixes. Hardstyle is ideally suited for this but I hope I’ll have some better equipment available in Japan.

This mix was my response to an advert, posted in a local, party focused magazine. A rather big club out in the bins was looking for a new House DJ sometime in the mid of 1999. As with a lot of my mixes, the BPM are on or even beyond the upper end of the scale considering we are talking House music here.

I recorded this mix primarily for myself, to have something to listen to while I needed to stay at a hospital due to tonsillectomy. As there were no clubs where music like this was regularly played in the general vicinity, this has been the sole purpose of this tape - until now.
As always I required double the time planned before I finally got discharged due to problems with continued bleeding / slow wound healing in the aftermath of the surgery. This tape, as well as the pain killers, kept me sane during this otherwise very unpleasant stretch of time.

1. My mom required yet another surgery on very short notice due to hemorrhage etc. Among other things: tumor removal through laparoscopic surgery.

2. German hospitals and staff are as bad as ever, still delaying the hand over of my medical documents and images. Declining to talk with my mom about my situation and what could still done. Failing to provide information on alternative treatments or clinical trials despite having no cure on offer.

3. New treatment option for synovial sarcoma with phase 2 clinical trials starting soon. Anti body therapy / radioimmunotherapy developed by Japanese company OncoTherapy Science Inc. in Kawaski.

4. In-depth review of the conventional radiotherapy that is planned for me in Germany, focusing on side effects as well as the tons of disclaimers that free hospital and staff from any responsibilities. Based on the genuine documents that I received from the hospital. And why giving in to this conventional therapy might lock me out from the new, more efficient treatment approach.

5. Germany / Netherlands comparison of the situation regarding resistant bacteria / nosocomial infections. And why the German healthcare system isn’t as good as politicians and doctors try to make everyone believe.

This video right here is pretty massive in size and scope. I didn’t plan for it but as things turned out it was necessary to be able to concentrate on a more narrow selection of topics for the next video. In terms of media included this is about the limit my iPad can do as it already takes ages to navigate and edit as well as generating a lot of errors during rendering, probably caused by lack of available RAM.

Now I called this one the great mix because there’s so much different stuff included. Up first is a closer look on the language woes I’m going to face and the options I have to deal with them. Followed by a reminder not to go overboard with the filming once in Japan, also providing an explanation why there’s not much content featuring myself up to this point.
Food will get tricky in Japan, so here goes another big chunk worth of screen time.
I really do value the high level of public safety in Japan since it will allow me to do a lot more things than in Germany right now, among them: improving my fitness. You won’t find many ‘western’ countries in the world that are as safe as Japan.
Next up I’m delving into the best memories of my life, a span of time from 1997 to 2000 where I tried to become a regular DJ in Germany. Of course it didn’t work out back then and at present this very scene is more or less dead, no where near it’s former size. In some neighboring countries like the Netherlands and Belgium it’s not looking as grim but everything turned into something that is very mainstream. A video comparison between old and new is due to illustrate what I’m talking about.
Finally I’m having a go at religion in Germany and on we go to the preview on what to expect in the next video. Hope to see you there!
