What Is E8 Good For? #PaCE1 Quantum Gravity Research 2022-11-01 | We give an overview of the utilization of E8 in theoretical physics for applications to unified field theory. Concepts such as Lie groups, root systems, and exceptional Lie groups are introduced. A brief overview of spacetime symmetries for gravity and gauge symmetries for the standard model and beyond is provided. A history of exceptional Lie groups in physics is provided, with a highlight on the work stemming from Feza Gursey and his doctoral students. David Chester - The Universe as a Holographic Quasicrystalline Tensor Network Quantum Gravity Research 2022-04-06 | This talk is a re-recording of a talk given by David Chester to Louis Kauffman’s Quantum Topology seminary at the University of Illinois at Chicago on March 24th, 2022. Recent advances in AdS/CFT holography have found an analogue in discrete tensor networks of qubits. The {5,4} hyperbolic tiling allows for topological error correction. We review a simple 32 x 32 Hamiltonian from five maximally entangled physical qubits on the boundary edges of a pentagon, whose two-fold degenerate ground state leads to an emergent logical qubit in the bulk. The inflation rule of a holographic conformal quasicrystal is found to encode the holographic code rate that determines the ratio of logical qubits to physical qubits. Generalizing SU(2) qubits to twistors as conformal spinors of SU(2,2), an H3-symmetric 5-compound of cuboctahedral A3 = D3 root polytopes is outlined. Motivated by error correction in the Hamming code, the E8 lattice is projected to the H4-symmetric quasicrystal. The 4-dimensional 600-cell is found to contain five 24-cells associated with the D4 root polytope associated with Spin(4,4). Intersection with Sp(8,R) phase space identifies three generations of conformal symmetry with an axial U(1) symmetry. A lightning review of E8(-24) phenomenology with Spin(12,4) is pursued for gravity and the standard model with a notion of CDT-inspired discretized membranes in mind. Warm dark matter beyond the standard model is briefly articulated to stem from intersecting worldvolumes related to the Leech lattice associated with the Golay code, hinting at a monstrously supersymmetric M-theory in D=26+1. The Legacy of Dr. Marni Sheppeard Quantum Gravity Research 2021-06-01 | Dr. Marni Sheppeard passed away during a hiking trip in New Zealand in early 2021. She was a category theorist with interests in theoretical physics, including the standard model and quantum gravity. Her thesis in 2007 introduced the notion of associahedra and operads being applied to scattering amplitudes in quantum field theory. Klee Irwin - Bending the Second Law Quantum Gravity Research 2020-06-25 | Classic & Quantum Mechanics is a theory based on the notion that at the very core of reality, randomness is the fundamental stuff of nature. So what we have is an ergodic theory wherein the microstate configurations that are energetically equal and describe some macroscopic configuration with a fixed energy "E" are all equally probable. If it were possible that emergent forms of ultra high complex information can act as a statistical force then in principle that very difficult to compute emergent complex energy systems information can act as a ergodicity buster to dehomogenize the microstate configurations in order to select the ones that lead to higher magnitudes if emergent complex information according to what the strategy is of that system of complex information. Matteo Baggioli - Homogeneous Holographic Viscoelastic Models & Quasicrystals Quantum Gravity Research 2020-06-01 | Matteo Baggioli is a friend of QGR and this presentation shows that the field theories dual to the homogeneous holographic models with spontaneously broken translations display several distinctive properties of quasicrystals, aperiodic crystals with long-range order (e.g. incommensurate charge density waves). This interpretation suggests that the longitudinal diffusive mode, observed in the spectrum of excitations of these systems, is the diffusive Goldstone boson typical of quasicrystals -- the phason. Meet Our Scientists - David Chester Quantum Gravity Research 2020-03-12 | The seventh in a series from Quantum Gravity Research, each episode focusing on a different scientist, their origins and backgrounds, where their love of science started and how they came to work at QGR. David became passionate about quantum field theory and general relativity while attending MIT for undergraduate studies. During his graduate studies at UCLA he worked on efficient scattering amplitude methods for Yang-Mills theory and its relation to solutions of gravity. His PhD thesis discussed how to compute gravitational radiation from Feynman diagrams. This further demonstrated that theoretical methods used for the LHC can be relevant for LIGO, two of the largest experimental endeavors. Caroline S. Gorham - What Hopf Fibrations can tell us about crystallization and glass formation Quantum Gravity Research 2019-05-06 | QGR visitor and friend Caroline Gorham delivered a guest lecture to the QGR team on what Hopf Fibrations can tell us about crystallization and glass formation. This research elucidates the topological origins of the formation of crystalline and non-crystalline solid states, by adopting a quaternion orientational order parameter. Crystalline solids are considered to form in “restricted dimensions’’ 4D/(3D+1t), by a defect-binding topological transition of third homotopy group defects and disclinations, as a higher-dimensional analogue to the formation of topologically-ordered superfluid states in “restricted dimensions’’ 2D/(1D+1t) (e.g., Josephson junction arrays). Ultimately, it is suggested that, the notion of restricted dimensions may be interpreted by considering the dimensionality of the topological defects associated with the complex or quaternion order parameter (fiber space of the 1st and 2nd Hopf fibrations). This work thereby generalizes the fundamental concepts of: Bose-Einstein condensation, the Hohenberg-Mermin-Wagner theorem and Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) topological ordering transitions from complex to quaternion Lie algebra domains. O(n) quantum rotor models mathematically model rotating Bose-Einstein condensates that exist in “restricted dimensions.” These models allow for the existence of frustrated ground states and, ultimately, a quantum phase transition between orientationally-ordered and orientationally-disordered ground states. These spectrum of ground states are ultimately realized in the laboratory, e.g., a superfluid-to-Mott insulator transition (complex) and a crystalline-to-glass transition (quaternion). The Kauzmann point (``ideal glass transition’’) is identified as a self-dual critical point between crystalline and non-crystalline solid states, achieved at a critical value of geometrical frustration (e.g., in topologically close-packed crystals) or for an infinitely slow cooling rate in glass-forming liquids. The transport properties of the ground states depend intimately on the ratio of potential and kinetic energies in the relevant O(n) quantum rotor model. Using this topological viewpoint, the inverse thermal transport properties of crystalline and non-crystalline solid states (above approximately 50 K) are considered alongside the electrical transport properties of JJAs across the singularity at the superconductor-to-superinsulator transition.Caroline Gorham received her Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University in August 2018. Carlos Castro Perelman - Bohms Potential, Classical/Quantum Duality, Repulsive Gravity Quantum Gravity Research 2019-03-26 | QGR Research Scientist Carlos Castro Perelman talks about Bohm's Potential, Classical/Quantum Duality and Repulsive Gravity and he proposes the notion of a classical/quantum duality in the gravitational case (it can be extended to other interactions). By this one means exchanging Bohm's quantum potential for the classical potential VQ↔V in the stationary quantum Hamilton–Jacobi equation (QHJE) so that VQ+V=−V0 (ground state energy). Despite that the corresponding Schrödinger equations, and their solutions differ, their associated quantum Hamilton–Jacobi equation, and ground state energy remains the same. This is how the classical/quantum duality is implemented. In this scenario Bohm's quantum potential (which coincides with the attractive Newtonian potential) is now correlated to a classical repulsive gravitational potential (plus a constant). These results suggest that there might be a quantum origin to the classical repulsive gravitational behavior (of the accelerated expansion) of the universe which is based on this notion of classical/quantum duality. Carlos Castro Perelman - Valued Gravity as a Grand Unified Field Theory Quantum Gravity Research 2019-03-11 | QGR Research Scientist Carlos Castro Perelman give a lecture on Valued Gravity as a Grand Unified Field Theory and argues how R ⊗ C ⊗ H ⊗ O-valued Gravity naturally can describe a grand unified field theory of Einstein's gravity with an U (8) Yang-Mills theory. In particular, it allows for an extension of the Standard Model by including a 3-family SU (3)F symmetry group and an extra U (1) symmetry. A unification of left-right SU (3)L ×SU (3)R, color SU (3)C and family SU (3)F symmetries in a maximal rank-8 subgroup of E8 has been proposed by [33] as a landmark for future explorations beyond the Standard Model. It is warranted to explore further if this latter model also admits a similar gravitational interpretation based on the above composition of normed division algebras. Furthermore, our construction leads also to a bimetric theory of gravity which may have a role in dark energy. The conjugation operation C amounts to complex scaling transformations, and the T operation t→(1∕t) amounts to the reversal log(t)→−log(t) . A judicious scaling-like operator is constructed whose spectrum Es=s(1−s) is real-valued, leading to s=12+iρ , and/or s= real. These values are the location of the non-trivial and trivial zeta zeros, respectively. A thorough analysis of the one-to-one correspondence among the zeta zeros, and the orthogonality conditions among pairs of eigenfunctions, reveals that no zeros exist off the critical line. In previous work, it was established that dessins stabilize point-line geometries whose incidence structure reflects the commutation of (generalized) Pauli operators. Now we find that the nonexistence of a dessin for which the commutator precisely corresponds to the commutator of quantum observables on all lines of the geometry is a signature of quantum contextuality. This occurs first at index : in Mermin's square and at index in Mermin's pentagram, as expected. Commuting sets of -qubit observables with are found to be contextual as well as most generalized polygons.
