The Minguren 1, a pedestal style table, was a design I came across in George Nakashima’s book "The Soul of a Tree." I affectionately call this table The Carpenter's Table, a play on the saying, "The cobbler's kids have no shoes." It's complex and intricate, yet still visually humble. There's so much under the surface of this build that tested every ounce of skill and personal grit within me.This live edge table build features Norfolk Island Pine for the live edge table top, with live edges being a staple of traditional George Nakashima furniture. The table base is constructed of mahogany, a significantly darker shade to provide a bit of a contrast.While not a true reproduction of a Nakashima dining table, this live edge wood dining table draws strong inspiration from the Minguren series and hopes to deliver you some non-traditional live edge table base ideas, better than the often overdone farmhouse trestle base. I used a stunning all brass Japanese hand plane! A true work of art. Cow Dog Craft Works 2024-12-08 | #japanesewoodworking #japanesewoodworkingtechnique #woodworkingtools A kanna dai, Japanese hand plane body, made entirely from brass! I had the opportunity to attend this year's Kezuroukai event in Hadano, Kanagawa, Japan. On one bench I happened upon a few folks that were playing around with a solid brass kanna and a solid aluminum kanna. It's amazing to use, but not particularly practical. The weight makes it so ANYONE can take an excellent shaving. Extremely fun and hope to compete here in the future.

The Art of Setting Up a Japanese Hand Plane (鉋 Kanna): Step-by-step Tutorial and Demo Cow Dog Craft Works 2024-03-29 | #kanna #japanesewoodworking #japanesewoodworkingtechnique I remember the first time I saw a Japanese hand plane pull a full length and full width snake skin shaving. I was hooked. As I felt the surface it left, glassy and shimmering in the light, I knew that my life was changed and that these planes were going to change the way I do woodwork for the rest of my life. It's meant that I've traveled the country, watching others who use them adeptly, in an attempt to absorb some of their knowledge and tricks. I've taken classes, read books, and I've failed a lot, all in the pursuit of trying to find an effective, repeatable, and usable method of setting up a Japanese hand plane (鉋 Kanna). There's a lot of mystery about Japanese hand planes that I hear often: that they don't work well in American domestic hardwoods, that they're just too fussy to use, and that they're antiquated and outdated. While these planes can be challenging, once setup, the juice is clearly worth the squeeze. You’ve NEVER seen a saw like this… Maebiki-Nokogiri Cow Dog Craft Works 2023-01-27 | #shorts #japanesewoodworking #japanesetoolsThis version of a Maebiki-Nokogiri isn't the huge whaleback saw most folks are used to, but it nevertheless is an absolute beast. Fresh from the metate, a professional sharpening and tensioning process, this saw is set up for hardwoods and as I'm out a table saw presently with a bandsaw on the way, I thought this would make for a fun activity for the weekend. Kobiki-shokunin were known to be larger in stature than most Japanese craftsmen due to the kind of work they had to do and using this saw definitely solidifies that for me. In Odate's book, he mentions a saying roughly translated to, "The kobiki eats almost two liters of rice at one meal." In other words, the hard, rough labor of the kobiki build up a ravenous appetite." 100 hours to make this panel. Installed in 30 minutes. | #shorts Cow Dog Craft Works 2022-12-04 | #japanese #bathroomdesign #shorts A small snippet on how I inlaid this kumiko panel into the apron of a bathroom vanity I recently finished. This panel itself took me an inappropriate amount of time to make. I contemplated a ton of different ways to install it, including making a ton of tiny mortises to perfectly set the panel in with no lateral room for error. Instead, I opted for a rabbet as the vanity itself is in a nook and there's no access to the back. It worked! This year, while doing a commission for a custom bathroom vanity, I managed to get caught with not one but two hurricanes. While both were near misses, they presented some challenges. However, no challenge was as great as the monster kumiko panel that I used as an apron for this open concept vanity. This is my first time with professional instruction on the matter and I was able to to transfer those skills to some of my planes here at home. I've now got a rough plane, a mid-plane, and a final smoother extra dialed in with exceptional fit and finely tuned bottoms. However, one of the biggest things is how to properly set up the chip breaker which I’ll go over in a future video. After years of struggling with it, Andrew showed me the fastest hack for set up. This bench is crafted from a pre-glued pine panel, available at any hardware store, and utilizes basic mortise and tenon joinery to create an extremely sturdy and simple bench that can be built from any species, colored any which way, to fit your space. In an effort to work with what we had, most of the joinery was cut with a router and finished by hand, using basic, and at times even damaged hand tools. In keeping up with the tradition of Japanese carpenters and woodworkers making and customizing their own tools, I've opted to make my own saw handle and found that it was done with a great deal of ease. Done in about an hour or two with glue drying time included, you can take a simple dry softwood and make a wonderful handle that is semi-permanent and comfortable in your hand. This is an incredible DIY project for those interested in getting into Japanese hand tools and for those who haven't tried non-disposable pull saws of this type and kind, the performance is a true revelation. HUGE Salvaged Tree Becomes Bespoke Table Cow Dog Craft Works 2022-06-14 | #sofatable #japaneseinspired #salvagedfurnitureGIANT Tree Becomes a Table | Salvaged Wood Furniture | Champion TreeIn this video I take a piece of the former Florida Champion Black Limba tree, the last of the lot in fact, and create this sofa table (pictured in the thumbnail as a hall table). This tree came down during hurricane Irma in 2017 at Flamingo Gardens in Davie, Florida, where a lightning strike from a tornado in a passing feeder band felled it. Then, after my sawyer friend slabbed it up, I lucked into one of the last pieces he had left to create this table. This table utilizes a ship miter to join the leg to the table top, also known as tomekata sanmai hozo in Japanese. I also utilized kine kata, bow tie splines, to stitch together the pieces that form the legs which had a natural crack running through them. The unique method of joining the legs to the top and the cantilevered design make the perfect piece to back a sofa or couch or as an entry way table or hall table. I've operated with minimal space for a number of years and as I've grown into more of a woodworker, I've also found that my tools end up all over the place. Making a Handle for a Japanese Hammer | Japanese Hand Tools | Genno Cow Dog Craft Works 2022-01-25 | #japanesewoodworkingtools #handtoolwoodworking #chinesenewyear2022Japanese woodworking tools have undoubtedly become an addiction of mine over the past two years or so. As my skill level has developed and my work is changing, I've grown extremely fond of hand crafted artisan steel made by masters. One of the unique things with Japanese tools is that they arrive at your door mostly finished, but with the final pieces needing to be completed by the user. Japanese plane bodies, even those made by the daiya themselves must be fine tuned by the user upon receipt. In this case, a 375 gram hammer head comes without a handle. I've been watching @ThirdCoastCraftsman for a fairly long time and I remember him making a curly teak handle for a genno a couple years back. Genno hammers are some of the most artfully crafted and best Japanese hand tools that are affordable and readily available. Since 2022 is the year of the tiger, my Chinese zodiac sign, I thought it would be fitting to not only treat myself to a special tool with a tiger engraving, but also do a video on making a handle for a Japanese hammer. Unlike traditional Japanese hand tools, this handle is made with jatoba, also known as Brazilian cherry. The handle is friction fixed with a brass wedge, and it is sculpted almost entirely by hand. As someone who is anticipating being on site and traveling with my tools a fair bit, I felt as though it was time for a proper home for my more prized hand tools. Enter, the traditional japanese tool chest. Inspired by The Anarchist's Tool Chest from Christopher Schwarz, this was designed to hold my most essential hand tools. However, a lack of proper planning and a ton of bumps along the way turned this into a basic place for my tools to live as opposed to the ultimate tool chest for Japanese tools. REAL TIME Hand Tool Sharpening | ASMR | Japanese Woodworking | Scary Sharp Cow Dog Craft Works 2021-12-23 | #asmr #handtools #japanesewoodworkingtoolsSharpening is an often romanticized process among hand tool woodworkers. While many view it as a chore, and indeed it is and can be, it can also really bring a level of intimacy to your tools and woodworking that is otherwise not obtainable. Here I'm walking you through the steps, in real time, of sharpening one Japanese paring slick and one Japanese plane blade. Since Japanese woodworking tools are often oblong in shape, they require jig free sharpening and careful attention in an effort to have the bevel and back meet at an exact sharp point. Furthermore, since Japanese steel is a lamination, with extremely hard steel on the bottom to form the edge, and a softer steel on the top for shock absorption and support, the process can be lengthy, but the results are absolutely impeccable. Japanese steel, adapted from the samurai tradition of sword making, holds an edge far longer than their western counterparts, but can truly be difficult to bring back to sharp if let go. Enjoy the slow, accurate, yet meandering process that is hand tool sharpening in real time. Furthermore, I hope this helps you develop an appreciation for what truly is a process to create genuine sharp tools, as opposed to tools that just cut paper and shave hair. A Timber Framing Mallet Like No Other! Cow Dog Craft Works 2021-12-07 | #timberframing #bigmalletenergy #gallaghermalletAs I'm preparing for a timber frame structure, I'm starting to gather the tools needed to make it happen and this extra large timber framing mallet was something necessary. Despite it being comically large, it's actually incredibly functional. In Japan, large timber framing mallets of this kind are known as "Commanders". This mallet is designed to knock large timbers and bring joints together where they require a little extra coaxing. It's made entirely from solid ash and weighs in at nearly fifteen pounds. This project was made with a blend of hand and power tools, featuring a power carved handle, and a draw bore mortise and tenon joint to fix the head to the handle. The mortise and tenon utilized an auger bit from Diablo Tools as well as oscillating multi tool blades to make the process quicker and easier than it would be otherwise. Building TIMBER FRAME Saw Horses | Hand Tool Woodworking Techniques Cow Dog Craft Works 2021-11-25 | #timberframing #japanesecarpentry #handtoolwoodworkingI've been getting into timber framing these past few months and have a pretty ambitious project in mind. However, before I get started on that, I have to get moving on some beam horses that can handle large timbers and keep me from having to lift a 12 foot timber above my waist. With that being said, I made a semi-traditional set of Japanese style timber frame saw horses from some scrap wood. Five components all friction fit with no adhesives and no mechanical fasteners make up this incredibly sturdy set of saw horses that can double as a seated work surface.
