Industrial Animal Agriculture Victimizes Animals and the Planet - Joyce Tischler, JDvshvideo2023-03-17 | The meat industry raises and kills 10 billion land animals in the United States each year for food, many of them in overcrowded unhealthy concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs). Some people call this "factory farming," but that term is misleading -- this massive industry is nothing like Old McDonald's Farm!
Learn what attorney Joyce Tischler teaches law students about • the conditions in which these animals are raised, transported and slaughtered, • the policies that brought this system into existence and support its continuation, • the negative impacts on the animals, the environment, climate change, neighboring communities, workers, food safety and public health, and • how to challenge this system in the courts and legislatures.
This presentation will provide you with the facts and figures you need to take action against this dirty, destructive industry!
Joyce Tischler is Professor of Practice in Animal Law at the Center for Animal Law Studies at Lewis & Clark Law School, Portland, Oregon here in the U.S. She teaches Industrial Animal Agriculture Law, and Animals in the Law (survey course). She co-authored Animal Law: New Perspectives on Teaching Traditional Law, and is now co-authoring the first casebook on industrial animal agriculture law in the U.S.
Joyce Tischler has devoted her career to advancing the field of animal law. In 1979, she co-founded the first U.S. nonprofit dedicated to protecting animals using the legal system, the Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF). She served as the ALDF’s executive director for 25 years and then its general counsel until the spring of 2019.

I’ll talk about the award-winning film Earthlings, and the impact of working on it for me and the people in my life. I’ll explain the benefits of eating a plant-based diet physically, emotionally, and creatively, and how the power of plants has affected my artistic health and slowed the effects of aging on my body. I’ll take a look at the connection between how we treat animals and our earth, and the impact it has had on society as a whole. Above all, I hope to inspire those who are considering transitioning to a vegan diet or are already on a journey to a plant-based diet; and help you to navigate family, friends, and travel as a healthy vegan.

Why?
Dean Ornish, M.D., is the founder and president of the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSF and Clinical Professor of Medicine at UCSD. He received his M.D. from the Baylor College of Medicine, was a clinical fellow in medicine at Harvard Medical School, and completed an internship and residency in internal medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital. He earned a B.A. in Humanities summa cum laude from the University of Texas in Austin, where he gave the baccalaureate address.
For over 43 years, he has directed clinical research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery. Medicare created a new benefit category, “intensive cardiac rehabilitation,” to provide coverage for this program. He directed the first randomized controlled trial demonstrating that comprehensive lifestyle changes may slow, stop or reverse the progression of early-stage prostate cancer. His research showed that comprehensive lifestyle changes affect gene expression, “turning on” disease-preventing genes and “turning off” genes that promote cancer and heart disease, as well as the first controlled study showing that these lifestyle changes may begin to reverse cellular aging by lengthening telomeres, the ends of our chromosomes which regulate aging (in collaboration with Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn, Nobel Laureate in Medicine & Physiology). He is currently directing the first randomized controlled trial to determine if comprehensive lifestyle changes may reverse the progression of early Alzheimer’s disease.
He is the author of seven books, all national bestsellers, including four New York Times bestsellers. UnDo It! (coauthored with Anne Ornish) was published by Random House as their lead nonfiction title in January 2019. His three main-stage TED.com talks have been viewed by over seven million people.
He was appointed by President Clinton to the White House Commission on Complementary and Alternative Medicine Policy; by President Obama to the White House Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health; and by Governor Newsom to the Governor’s Brain Trust on Alzheimer’s Disease Prevention and Preparedness. He is also a member of The Lancet Oncology “Moonshot Commission.” He has been a member of the board of directors of the San Francisco Food Bank. Dr. Ornish and colleagues established a lifestyle medicine clinic at the St. Vincent de Paul Homeless Shelter in San Francisco where over 30,000 homeless people were treated.
The “Ornish diet” has been rated “#1 for Heart Health” by a panel of experts at U.S. News & World Report for eleven years from 2011-2022. He co-chaired the Google Health Advisory Council with Marissa Mayer 2007-9.
He received the 1994 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from the University of Texas, Austin; the University of California, Berkeley, “National Public Health Hero” award; the Jan J. Kellermann Memorial Award for distinguished contribution in the field of cardiovascular disease prevention from the International Academy of Cardiology; a U.S. Surgeon General Citation; a Presidential Citation from the American Psychological Association; the inaugural “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the American College of Lifestyle Medicine; the Beckmann Medal from the German Society for Prevention and Rehabilitation of Cardiovascular Diseases; the “Pioneer in Integrative Medicine” award from California Pacific Medical Center; the Stanley Wallach Award from the American College of Nutrition; the Glenn Foundation Award for Research; the Bravewell Collaborative Pioneer of Integrative Medicine award; the Sheila Kar Health Foundation Humanitarian Award from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center; Plantrician Project Luminary Award; and others. Dr. Ornish has been a physician consultant to President Clinton since 1993 and consulted with the chefs at The White House, Camp David, and Air Force One to cook more healthfully (1993-2000).
Dr. Ornish was recognized as “one of the 125 most extraordinary University of Texas alumni in the past 125 years;” by TIME magazine as a “TIME 100 Innovator;” by LIFE magazine as “one of the fifty most influential members of his generation;” by People magazine as “one of the most interesting people of the year;” and by Forbes magazine as “one of the world’s seven most powerful teachers.”

Colin Campbell, PhDvshvideo2022-11-22 | Since the discovery of protein in 1939, nutrition has been ill-defined, in a way that primarily depends on the consumption of animal-based protein and on the summed activities of another 30-40 individual nutrients acting independently. Animal protein is not high quality as often said and the serious illnesses suffered (cardiovascular diseases, cancers, diabetes, chronic kidney disease and many autoimmune diseases) 70-80% of all deaths can often be reversed (treated) by the same nutritional protocol that prevents these diseases. Instead, we rely on the use of pharmaceuticals whose side effects are the fourth leading cause of death, at least.
T. Colin Campbell, PhD, who, at Cornell University, presently holds his Endowed Chair as the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry in the Division of Nutritional Sciences, has been dedicated to the science of human health for more than 60 years.
His primary focus is on the association between diet and disease, particularly cancer. Although largely known for the China Study, one of the most comprehensive studies of health and nutrition ever conducted, and recognized by The New York Times as the “Grand Prix of epidemiology” —Dr. Campbell’s profound impact also includes extensive involvement in education, public policy, and laboratory research.
He has received over 70 grant-years of peer-reviewed research funding (mostly with NIH), served on grant review panels of multiple funding agencies, actively participated in the development of national and international nutrition policy, and authored over 350 research papers, most published in peer-reviewed science journals.
To synthesize his findings over his career, and to give back to the public whose lives are threatened by rampant misinformation and special interests, Dr. Campbell co-wrote The China Study: Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss and Long-term Health (2005, 2016), which has sold more than 3 million copies worldwide and has been translated into 50 foreign languages. He’s also written the New York Times bestseller Whole (2013), The Low Carb Fraud (2013), and The Future of Nutrition. An Insider’s Look at the Science, Why We Keep Getting It Wrong and How to Start Getting It Right (2020). Several documentary films feature Dr. Campbell and his research, including Forks Over Knives, Eating You Alive, Food Matters, and PlantPure Nation.
He is also the founder of the T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and the online Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate powered by eCornell.

Poor nutrition promotes health inequities and ethnic disparities.
Plant-based diets are associated with lower rates of obesity and diabetes, high quality of life and longer life expectancy, as well as less hypertension, dyslipidemia, peripheral artery disease, coronary disease, myocardial infarction, erectile dysfunction, heart failure, chronic kidney disease, stroke and death, much of which is mediated by the microbiome.
In our dual heart disease and COVID-19 pandemic, we need to advocate for risk factor reduction, whenever and wherever possible by improving our microbiome to reduce mortality associated with nutrition-related illnesses.
Dr. Kim Allan Williams is currently the Chairman of the University of Louisville Department of Medicine. He specializes in cardiology, cardio-nutrition, cardio- rheumatology, cardio-nephrology, preventive cardiology and cardiovascular radiology. He is a past President of the American College of Cardiology, past President of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology, and former Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Association of Black Cardiologists.
He is also the founder of the Urban Cardiology Initiative in Detroit, Michigan, aiming to reduce ethnic heart care disparities. He continues community-based efforts in Chicago at Rush University Medical Center, including the H.E.A.R.T. program (Helping Everyone Assess Risk Today), screening for heart disease and intervening with education, nutrition and lifestyle changes. He has been a delegate for cardiology to the American Medical Association for over 20 years and has served as a consultant for the FDA and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
His current professional focus is on preventive cardiology, synthesizing data on cardiovascular risk and mortality due to nutrition. He has over 600 research and guideline publications, online resources, movies and lectures, most recently on the topic of cardio-nutrition. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Disease Reversal and Prevention (ijdrp.org/index.php/ijdrp).
A native of Chicago’s South Side’s inner-city schools, and a former professional tennis player and national tennis coach, Dr. Williams has over 40 years of experience as an educator, researcher, and clinician focused on advocacy for nutrition, national and international health care disparities, health care delivery, and advanced access to cardiac imaging.

Your Patients Are Eating Themselves to Death! Presented by Michael Klaper, MD
Obesity, clogged arteries, Type-2 diabetes, many cancers and autoimmune diseases -- in fact, most of the chronic diseases that absorb most of the time, energy and finances in the health care system, are driven largely by the Standard American Diet, which is laden with an excess of animal-based products, refined carbohydrates and processed oils, along with many other adulterants. Changing to truly health-supporting food choices predictably results in dramatic improvement - if not complete resolution - of these fearsome diseases. Dr. Klaper will explain the (mal)nutrition-based pathophysiology of these common maladies, and present practical (and tasty) methods for instituting food choices that can effectively ameliorate these fearsome diseases!
Michael A. Klaper, M.D. is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine in Chicago. He received postgraduate training in internal medicine, surgery, anesthesiology, and orthopedics at University of British Columbia teaching hospitals in Vancouver and obstetrics at the University of California at San Francisco. He has practiced acute care medicine in Hawaii, Canada, California, Florida and New Zealand. Far more fulfilling to him is his current practice, focusing on health-promoting food and lifestyle choices to help people prevent the need for hospitalization and surgery. A long-time radio host and a pilot, Dr. Klaper has served as nutrition advisor to NASA’s programs for space colonists on the Moon and Mars. He makes the latest information on health and nutrition available through his website, DoctorKlaper.com, where visitors can find the numerous videos and DVDs he has produced, as well subscribe to his free newsletter, “Medicine Capsule.”

However, many patients with kidney disease who eat plant-based diets do not experience these issues and actually experience several health benefits, including improved blood pressure; reduced acid and phosphate levels; reductions in mortality and proteinuria; and a slower progression - if not reversal (in select cases) - of their underlying renal disease. As a result, an optimal diet for patients with renal disease is one that emphasizes the consumption of plant-based foods.

Unfortunately, the one thing that could reverse chronic disease and stop the need for most prescription medications, physicians didn’t learn about in medical school, so they continue to practice medicine the way they were taught, with a pen and prescription pad, and a scalpel. Those prescription medications have side effects and kill 106,000 Americans every year, according to one study. That would place your doctor as one of the leading killers of Americans. Scary isn’t it?

It advances the hypothesis that an ecosystem’s role for human beings as the "Thermostat Species" is in harmony with scientific facts as well as with the foundational stories of major cultures. With strong scientific evidence, it shows why we need to transform to a largely Vegan World to continue fulfilling this ecosystems role as compassionate "Climate Healers" by 2026, seven short years from now, or risk our own extinction.

Compassionate Conservation is an emerging, multidisciplinary field of science that reimagines our relationship with and responsibility for wild animals by recognizing that we need a conservation ethic that prioritizes the protection of other animals as individuals, valued in their own right, not just as units of populations and species. It seeks to inspire scientifically and ethically sound conservation practice by embodying four core principles:
1) Help or do no harm: Harms to wild animals should be eliminated and minimized regardless of intention and purpose;
2) Individuals matter: Individual animals are important to the health of their social groups and populations;
3) Good labels or no labels: Negative labels (e.g., pest, nuisance) should not be used as they often belie the intrinsic and ecological value of animals, leading to inhumane treatment;
4) Foster co-existence: Human behaviors should be adopted that promote the sharing of space, and respect for animal wildness.
Dr. Liv Baker is a conservation behaviorist and an expert in wild animal welfare. She researches the role individual, wild animals have in the health of their social groups and populations; exploring the similar patterns of well-being seen across the animal kingdom: that individuals want to hold sway over their lives; that good psychological health and social context matter, and that challenges and positive emotions are integral elements to being alive.
Liv’s conservation and welfare research involve a range of animals, including elephants, cetaceans, primates, arachnids, rodents, and macropods. She teaches at Hunter College, USA in the Animal Behavior and Conservation program; is executive director of the Institute for Compassionate Conservation and research director with Mahouts Elephant Foundation, UK. Dr Baker is advisor for Elephant Aid International’s integrative health team, as well as scientific advisor for the Whale Sanctuary Project, and past fellow with the Centre for Compassionate Conservation, Australia.

Bees recognize faces. Rats laugh when they’re tickled. Elephants have huge social networks. Crows tell their babies which humans are dangerous. Pigs like to play miniature golf. Octopuses can hold two conversations at once, using color patterns on different sides of their body. These are more than fun facts—they show that, although different from humans, other animals are sentient, and are much more like us than many of us allow ourselves to believe. In this presentation Dr. Anderson relates recent findings about animals’ sentience, and shares how this knowledge has convinced her of the truth of Jenny Brown’s statement, “Animals are here with us, not for us.”
Victoria Anderson is Associate Professor of Linguistics at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. In June 2010 she attended Rory Freedman’s Get Real lecture at VSH O‘ahu, and became a VSH “homegrown vegan”. Two other things happened that year: she created a course at UHM in Animal Communication, and she began volunteering at an elephant sanctuary for abused and injured elephants in northern Thailand. Since then she has learned a great deal about how animals communicate within and across species. She will share some of this information in her presentation, and reflect on how it has affected her lifestyle choices.

Could the reasons that cause people to choose to consume a plant diet be altered by ever-advancing technology in such a way as to materially undermine those reasons? Will vegetarianism always be better than eating animals, regardless of what may happen to the growing and producing of plant foods? If you’ve already considered this question, you may want to do it again—food production technology is a fast-moving target, leading one international food scientist to point out that the nutritional content of our diet is changing faster than science can ascertain its effects on our health, or our planet.
Dr. John Kelly completed his undergraduate studies in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Shepherd College in West Virginia, graduating Summa Cum Laude as a McMurran Scholar. He then completed the Dual MD/MPH Degree Program at Loma Linda University with honors. He is trained in Preventive Medicine and has done private and government-funded research in Lifestyle Medicine. Dr. Kelly was the founding President of the American College of Lifestyle Medicine, and serves as adjunct faculty at two medical schools. He currently practices Lifestyle Medicine at the Black Hills Health & Education Center in Hermosa, SD.

Dr. Oppenlander addresses the fact that our current choice of foods is the single leading contributing factor for the comprehensive effect of Global Depletion—climate change, land use inefficiencies/desertification and freshwater scarcity, irreversible damage to our oceans, loss of biodiversity and rapid mass extinctions of species, world hunger and food insecurity, and loss of our own health. Importantly, Dr. Oppenlander frankly discusses the imminent and narrowing time lines, or tipping points, that we face in terms of resolution and that time may, indeed, be running out for our own survival as a species. He challenges audiences with new insights regarding how this has occurred and what factors impede us from realizing positive change.
Dr. Richard Oppenlander is a sustainability consultant, researcher, and author whose award-winning first book, Comfortably Unaware, is endorsed as a must-read by Ellen DeGeneres and Dr. Jane Goodall, among others. Dr. Oppenlander's most recent book titled Food Choice and Sustainability has won numerous awards including the 2014 International Book Award and the 2014 Green Book Festival Award and is being used by think tanks and strategists for developing initiatives to advance global change. Dr. Oppenlander is a much sought after international lecturer on the topic of food choice and how it relates to sustainability, speaking most recently to the European Parliament, and served as the lead consultant for two full-length environmental documentary films. Dr. Oppenlander has spent the past 40 years studying the effects food choices have on our planet and on us.
