One Picture That Haunted Me For Years Spikima Movies 2024-12-10 | When I was young, I came across a picture of a face online that scared me so much that it took me over 20 years to confront it again.This sudden courage to face my fear came when my memory got unintentionally resurfaced by watching this one scene from Oz Perkins' 'Longlegs'. When a plot twist happens within 10 minutes Spikima Movies 2024-09-09 | Ever watched a film and got shocked by a plot twist? Well, what would happen if that plot twist happens in the opening of the film?Soft & Quiet, a 2022 film by Beth de Araújo does exactly that. Coralines Hidden Visual Details Spikima Movies 2024-07-12 | Watching Coraline from the perspective of filmmaking is just as magical as coming up with story-related theories. After all, this film is shot and paced like an atmospheric / surrealistic horror film - with the use of dutch angles, high angle shots, clashing colors, dissolve transitions, costume and set design and more. And we're going to talk about some of them.But it seems like many people think of stop motion animation as a completely separate entity from live action films, but they aren't so different, especially if you remember that stop motion animation requires MORE physical prep and meticulous planning in order to make it work just the right way.And since Coraline was shot in 3D, the headache is doubled, if not tripled. Now, everything I say is a bit of an exaggeration as this video is made with the intention of exploring and getting used to the head space of 'filmmaking' - meaning this is more of an exercise than an answer. In fact, I'd argue that coming to an answer is the exact opposite of what we're trying to do here. So more so than usual, take things with a huge grain of salt. Having said that, I personally believe that regarding blue curtains as more than just being blue is perfectly fine, as long as you are staying within the boundaries of what the film offers and do not go outside the film world to bring in new ideas to change the color of the curtain altogether. The bad kind of overanalysis usually happens when you start placing things from the outside, but if from within, a certain level of 'over'analysis is a great practice to open your minds to the workings of the film, and can lead you to better critical thinking down the road.But I digress. Inglourious Basterds | The Most Cryptic Movie Villain Spikima Movies 2024-06-11 | Hans Landa isn't just an intimidating detective. He is an actor and an enigma.Ever since the release of Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds in 2009, people have been adding Colonel Hans Landa to their list of the most iconic movie villains of all time - I don't blame them. As jaded as the list may seem, villain aside, you have to admit Landa is one heck of a character. But why? We know he has his ways with words, and we know he is a great detective, a master manipulator, a narcissistic opportunist, but a weirdly comedic loser at certain points. THIS is How You Build Tension in a Film Spikima Movies 2024-04-25 | This brutal crime film was way too intense for my anxious brain, but in the best way possible. And most people have never even heard of it: Pusher 3.One thing I appreciate about Nicolas Winding Refn films is that they know how to build good tension. The Anxious Perspective of Good Time Spikima Movies 2024-01-11 | Can a film simulate a full blown panic attack? How could a film make the audience feel anxious, without showing something awful? Is it just about the acting, or is there more to it that is actually 'cinematic'? In fact, what even is a psychopath? Is that a real thing? (hint - in terms of diagnosis, no it's not.)Louis Bloom from Dan Gilroy's Nightcrawler (2014) is one of my favourite films when it comes to effectively portraying a bone-chilling psychopathic (or sociopathic if you want to be precise) character using not just the actor's ability, but various cinematic tricks, including camera work, score, and the script itself. The Hidden Details of Talk to Me Spikima Movies 2023-10-08 | Have you noticed how Mia is ALWAYS in YELLOW? What about the fact that the entire film is graded in shades of BLUE? And the sounds? Did you notice how loud they are, and how many times the same sound returns in different scenes throughout the film?While this film isn't (in my opinion) a masterpiece or a groundbreaking horror film, it is certainly not nearly as bad as some people claim it to be, and I'd like to explore some of the techniques Talk to Me utilizes to supplement its thematic and narrative goals. Now, the whole point of this video is to talk about how any film (given it's relatively well executed) can be dissected technically, and that it doesn't mean commercial film has no technical aspects to analyze - it's a matter of a spectrum - what is emphasized first in the foreground, and in one sense, that's why it's MORE DIFFICULT to dissect the so called commercial films compared to the more arthouse films.Therefore, I could've chosen any film to do this, but I thought Talk to Me is right in the middle of the field in terms of balancing the (what people call are) commercial and arthouse elements, and so it'd be easier to present this idea to you. So yes, this isn't about how great Talk to Me is or how bad it is for that matter, so keep that in mind when watching to get the best out of this. I say this, because I see so many more people talking about films in a weirdly objective manner, stating how this film is the best or that film is a garbage and there is no other way around it, and that anyone who likes or enjoys this or that film is just as idiotic, blah blah blah, and I don't think that kind of idea can come from anyone who REALLY loves cinema as an art form. The same goes with everything else you often see in his films, including violence and action. While Decision to Leave may seem like an obvious story with blatant symbolism, it functions more like a visual poem that expresses its emotions with its rhythm, colour, tone, images, and sounds.
