I Built a DIY VR Treadmill and It Feels Better Than the $2,000 Ones

MartydudeVR 2026-09-17 | I built a DIY VR treadmill for $298 — meet the Dude Mill. After almost two years of running on Kat VR and the Virtuix Omni One, I wanted a cheap VR treadmill that anyone could build at home, so I partnered with Reality Runner and put together a full VR treadmill setup using a Sunny manual treadmill, a climbing harness, climbing rope, wall hooks, and cardboard. In this video I walk through the entire build, the Reality Runner V2 sensor and software that turn any manual treadmill into a VR locomotion device for SteamVR, the exact parts list and cost breakdown, and how it actually feels to play Contractors, No Man's Sky, and Gunman Contracts on a homemade VR treadmill. I also compare it directly to the $800+ slidemills from Kat VR and Virtuix and answer the big question: is a $300 DIY VR treadmill worth it? The surprise wasn't the weight, although 93 grams is absurd next to the Vision Pro at over 1.3 pounds or a Quest 3 at 515 grams. The surprise was the resolution and passthrough.

This video covers the 6DoF MR glasses in detail that run high resolution with no problem. It also covers the catches, and there are real ones: no SteamVR at launch, no built-in speakers, and hand tracking that gives up in low light because there are no IR sensors.

The Kickstarter opens August 4, with early-bird spots from $699 to $799 standard.
