President Marcos Jr lauds government agencies for collective oil spill response efforts Philippine Coast Guard 2023-04-17 | WATCH: The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) and joint government agencies were commended by Philippine President Ferdinand R Marcos Jr for their collective efforts in the oil spill response during his visit in Pola, Oriental Mindoro last 15 April 2023. Pola is one of the municipalities in Oriental Mindoro hardly affected by the oil spill incident brought by MT Princess Empress, carrying industrial fuel oil which sank in Naujan waters of Oriental Mindoro last 28 February 2023. In the occurrence of the incident, all concerned agency secretaries were alerted by the President and instructed to extend assistance in the affected communities. Upon the President's arrival in Pola, an aerial surveillance was conducted to inspect the present affected areas and operational area where the PCG and Malayan Towage and Salvage Corporation are jointly conducting offshore containment and recovery efforts. Afterwhich, a number of agencies provided a situation briefing to share developments on the current situation, updates of response, provided programs, and other concerns per department. For the Coast Guard's part, CG Commodore Tuvilla discussed the response operations of the IMT Oriental Mindoro for the period of 28 February 2023 up to present. As of 16 April 2023, a total of 20,283 liters of oily-water mixture were collected by offshore response teams. Meanwhile, the PCG collected a total of 5,241.5 sacks (approximately 131,037.5 kilos) and 22 drums (approximately 2,750 kilos) of oil contaminated debris at 12 affected barangays in Naujan, Calapan, and Pola in Oriental Mindoro. A total of 9,600 square meters of mangroves were affected in Barangay Calima [200 square meters (sqm)], Barangay Batuhan (8,900 sqm), and Barangay Misong (500 sqm), all in Pola. Clean-up operations of the PCG has reached approximately 77.91% acceptably cleaned shoreline, covering 31.64 kilometers out of the 40.61 kilometers of total affected shoreline were already cleaned. Likewise, the PCG delegation was represented by the Commandant, CG Admiral Artemio Abu; and Crisis Management Committee officials, CG Vice Admiral Rolando Lizor Punzalan Jr, CG Vice Admiral Robert Patrimonio; and Coast Guard District Southern Tagalog Commander, CG Commodore Inocencio Rosario Jr. Following the briefing is the distribution of various government assistance. ADDITIONAL ROV-EQUIPPED VESSEL ARRIVES TO HELP CONTAIN THE OIL SPILL Philippine Coast Guard 2023-04-04 | WATCH: To intensify the oil spill operations in Oriental Mindoro, the Dynamic Positioning Vessel, "Pacific Valkyrie" equipped with a Remotely Operated Underwater Vehicle (ROV) from Singapore arrived in Calapan on 02 April 2023. Said vessel is contracted by the US Navy Supervisor of Salvage and Diving (SUPSALV) to conduct thorough surveys and three-dimensional mapping of Motor Tanker Princess Empress which sank off the waters of Naujan,Β Oriental MindoroΒ last 28 February 2023. Moreover, Pacific Valkyrie will attempt to execute remedial measures as temporary method to mitigate the oil release coming from the oil tanker which their MR2 βHydrosβ ROV can provide. HYDROS is a 2,000-pound ROV designed to meet the rapid deployable salvage requirements to a maximum performance depth of up to 5,000 feet. The control system has an ROV dynamic positioning capability enabling the vehicle to dive via computer instruction allowing hands free position keeping, auto-translate movement, following pre-programmed routes and go to position functions. Prior conduct of boarding procedure formalities to the subject vessel, CG Commodore Geronimo Tuvilla, Incident Commander and IMT-Calapan staff officers conducted a briefing to the Bureau of Customs, Immigration and Quarantine personnel and local ship agent. After a short briefing, boarding authorities departed Port of Calapan onboard BRP Bagacay (MRRV-4410) to rendezvous with Pacific Valkyrie at Calapan Anchorage Area. Philippine authorities and liaisons from the US Coast Guard met the SUPSALV officials to initially discuss the concept of operations, other operational details and time elements that the Japanese Salvage Company will also be continuing for the bagging technique upon arrival of the specialized items which arrived yesterday, 03 April 2023.
