Here I am joined by Jien, Arianne and Rahim from the Glitter Cymru committee to try and give our take on those questions.

Come and celebrate another year of Glitter! This is the 3rd year we’ve put on this event where LGBT+ ethnic minority people in Wales take centre stage and are celebrated! Our pride event last year was a huge milestone for Glitter Cymru. We had over 70 people attend, which took place at Cathays Community Centre. It was such a warm and supportive environment. This year we’ve gone digital again - but we’re not letting this virus stop us from taking our platform and being visible. That’s why Glitter Cymru was started for our marginalised community: to gain confidence and empowerment in their identities. It can be very challenging being a LGBT+ ethnic minority in Wales. We don’t see people like us in the local LGBT+ scene (i.e. pubs, clubs etc) or in the media we consume. It can feel very isolating, unfortunately racism is an issue within the LGBT+ community as many of our group attendees have attested to. Stonewall, a leading LGBT+ charity found in its recent ‘LGBT in Britain’ report that 51% of LGBT+ ethnic minority people had experienced discrimination from the wider LGBT+ scene, this figure goes up to 61% for Black LGBT+ people. On top of this many LGBT+ ethnic minority people can feel othered by their own families or people who share their ethnicity. All this rejection from people who share various parts of your identity can deeply impact one's mental health and force people to hide their true authentic selves to fit in. So events like Glitter Pride are necessary to highlight our communities issues and challenges as well as highlight the fun side like our creativity and talent. Leading up to our pride event, we have asked supporters of the LGBT+ ethnic minority community to take our Better Allies pledge. The aim of the pledge is to get our supporters to think about how they support marginalised communities. We particularly want our supporters to listen to us, educate themselves of our issues and use their privilege to raise awareness about us to others. That’s what we believe is the foundation of being a better ally. You’ll find many Better Allies pledges scattered throughout our Virtual Pride. A big THANK YOU to everyone who has submitted a pledge, we hope consistent action from our allies will be the next step. Please find below the schedule for our virtual Pride and we hope the various segments in this event gives you an insight into who the LGBT+ ethnic minority community are. Thank you and enjoy!Glitter Cymru presents Aladdin - the queerest Panto of them all!Glitter Cymru2020-12-24 | What a year 2020 has been! Ms Rona continues to cause havoc and though we’re far from being out the woods, many of us have adapted and found the strength to keep going.
Glitter Cymru has undoubtedly adapted. Since March we’ve moved our monthly face to face meet-ups to a weekly basis on Zoom. We were fortunate enough to have some funding to provide our group attendees with the technology to keep us all connected in this time of uncertainty.
Perhaps the silver lining to this challenging year has been that we as LGBT+ ethnic minority people finding a greater sense of community, closeness and motivation from one another. We kept each other going that for sure!
As we dive into this festive period, we wanted to round off 2020 on a campy, silly but wonderful note! And what better way then putting on a Zoom pantomime of all things!
So here it is! Our Panto version of Aladdin with a full cast of LGBT+ ethnic minority people - our very Glitter Cymru attendees in fact!
Expect something made on a 50p budget with shamelessly wooden performances - let’s just say it’s so bad, it’s BRILLIANT! We hope you enjoy our very first Panto and laugh along with us.
If you wish to support Glitter Cymru’s work so we can continue to empower, encourage and support the LGBT+ ethnic minority community in Wales, please donate to our Go Fund Page here: gofund.me/450f08bf
