#haroldhalibut #stopmotion #claymation
From Willa Rowe at Kotaku.com: Harold Halibut has been a long-time coming. The first game from developer Slow Bros. took 14 years to develop, owed entirely to its handcrafted claymation art style. It’s a striking visual style, but the characters that inhabit the claymation world are never given as much care as the painstaking manner in which they’re rendered.
Harold Halibut players are put in the shoes of the titular Harold, a lab assistant (who mostly gets treated like a janitor) aboard the Fedora, a space ship now submerged under water on a poisonous planet. 250 years ago, worried that the Cold War would destroy earth entirely, the All Water Corporation built the Fedora as a life raft meant to preserve humanity on a new planet. While being stuck under water wasn’t the original plan, the citizens of the Fedora have carved out a simple life for themselves. At least it’s better than getting nuked into oblivion on Earth, right?

Defeating the ‘Blue-Eyed Samurai’ in Team Ninja’s open-world action RPG will net you a sweet armor set and a Nioh-inspired combat style.
From Levi Winslow on Kotaku.com On March 31, the PlayStation UK X/Twitter account revealed something I suspected was in the game: William Adams, the protagonist of the first Nioh and the first non-Japanese samurai, is in Rise of the Ronin. Well, not exactly. Since Nioh takes place hundreds of years before the events of Rise of the Ronin, he’s called the “Blue-Eyed Samurai” here, reminiscent of the excellent Netflix anime with the very similar name. Anyway, William—I mean, the Blue-Eyed Samurai—plays a small role here, a mere sub-boss encounter as part of the open-world photography activities, but crossing swords with him is very much worth the effort.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 has a devastating contagion explained by Kotaku. Players of Capcom’s action RPG have been baffled by the lethal disease spread between NPC allies.
#dragonsdogma2 #dragonsplague #capcom
Dragonsplague is a mysterious illness that only your AI companions can develop. As the name suggests, Pawns initially contract the contagious virus by coming into contact with one of those big-ass flying lizards in the world, and as the game’s pop-up message indicates, “devastating calamity” will ensue if you don’t deal with it on the onset. What do I mean here? Well, if any of your Pawns become afflicted with Dragonsplague—either through close proximity with a dragon or with another Pawn that has the disease—then that companion will eventually turn into a shadowy dragon after resting at an inn and kill everyone in the area. And I do mean everyone, including important merchants and quest-givers. It sucks because outside of a few telltale signs—pulsing red eyes, body fatigue and headaches, and insubordination—it’s very easy to disregard the possibility that your main or hired Pawn has the ick.

The Mystic Spearhand vocation blends close and long-range combat into one terrifying package
#dragondogma #dragondogma2 #gameplay
A sequel to Capcom’s cult-fave 2012 action-adventure game, Dragon’s Dogma 2 picks up where its predecessor left off. After getting your heart broken by a very mean dragon, you venture out to—once again—prove that you’re deserving of love by killing the beast. You’ll recruit NPC servants known as Pawns to travel with you, fend off all manners of vicious creatures (like goblins and golems), and complete myriad main and side quests as you uncover the whereabouts of the heart-breaking flying lizard. If this sounds a lot like the original Dragon’s Dogma, well, it is, but that’s not a bad thing.
The sequel’s Mystic Spearhand is similar to the original game’s Mystic Knight in that both vocations specialize in magic- and melee-based combat. But that’s where the similarities end. The Mystic Spearhand is faster than the Mystic Knight, able to quickly dash around the battlefield thanks to its teleportation skills. It’s also got a wider range of spells at its disposal that allow you to buff your allies while dishing out massive amounts of damage on your own, letting the class fill in the roles of “attacker,” “support,” and “tank” simultaneously.

Atlus’ remake of the 2006 supernatural RPG offers plenty of ways to pass the time.
#persona3reload #persona3 #gameplay
From Kotaku's Persona 3 Reload review by Kenneth Shepherd:
Persona 3 was always the best one. Persona 3 Reload, the from-the-ground-up remake of the 2006 supernatural, social sim-driven RPG, just eliminates any doubt. A complete visual overhaul, new mechanics, and new music all reinforce what made the original a stellar, poignant, and radical game for its time. However, Reload is more than just a prettier version of an old game; It’s the best-realized version of an iconic story that spotlights some of the magic that Atlus hasn’t quite lived up to since.
Persona has always been about high-school students fighting supernatural forces, but P3 was the progenitor of the life-management elements that have become central to the franchise. Reload is a fascinating way to revisit a moment when Persona was more in touch with its roots as a Megami Tensei subseries and still establishing its own unique identity. The remake is a testament to how far the series has come and how far it still has to go.

Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is the latest in the long-running series of games formerly known as Yakuza. Starting in 2005 on the PS2, Yakuza introduced the world to its gripping tale of Japanese gangsters struggling to survive the complex loyalties and alliances of the criminal underworld, often forced to fight in overwhelming situations in order to survive.
Infinite Wealth itself is a direct sequel to 2020’s Yakuza: Like a Dragon, which departed significantly from the standard brawling action that has long been the series’ bread and butter. As in that game, combat here is entirely turn-based, with all of the RPG stats and features you know from games that are usually set in more fantastical realms. Starring one of the most charismatic characters of our time, Ichiban Kasuga, Infinite Wealth tells a satisfying and intriguing tale of mystery and organized crime. And it’s all set in a digestible RPG that rewards the time you put into it without feeling burdensome or unapproachable.
