Today I'm sat in a little park by Honolulu Zoo, in front of a pretty spectacular Indian Banyan Tree, a spot where I've been playing a lot since being here and not having any privacy in my hostel to sit and practice. Sweet Child O' Mine is a pretty significant song to me as a ukulele player, as the riff marked one of the first bits of complex ukulele I ever learned, and was the starting block for my old band Ukes Not Nukes (whom you can see performing this very song here: http://youtu.be/OXXcTQMmmBc?t=2m. Oh how we've all grown). So yeah, I really want to get much more stuff out there, and I have so many videos in the formative stages of life that it seems silly not to get them all uploaded. I only heard the song for the first time about a week ago, when a friend showed it to me and added the comment "you should totally do a cover of this". So it seems I've gone and totally done a cover of this. This is one of the rare songs that is unbelievably catchy, yet after listening to it on repeat pretty much constantly for a week in order to try and learn the Korean lyrics it's still as freaking awesome as the first time you hear it. I can tell you that there are not many songs that fit that category.My version may not be certain to penetrate the foundations of modern philosophy, but it sure was a hell of a lot of fun to make. And before you ask, I did consider doing the dance, but I had a hard enough time trying to learn the lyrics; adding the dance into the equation would have surely killed me before I managed to complete it. I'm a huge fan of film music, and John Williams, alongside being arguably the most famous film composer of all time, is certainly one of my favourites, having composed some of the most powerful, moving, influential and downright epic music to hit the big screen.This video was originally uploaded as part as a birthday present for my friend Murray (http://www.youtube.com/THERevMurray if you really want to, but do so at your own risk). Hello, it's been a while...So I know in previous description boxes I've promised to stop starting these things with an apology, but.. well.. shut up. Sorry it's been so long since I last made a video, I've had multiple people complain that it's been too long (I know, actual people, who knew?) so I figured I owe y'all an explanation. The thing is, I'm really rubbish at doing things. There, explanation complete :)So anyway, this is a song that I've actually been working on since before Christmas (thus the coat and gloves in the video, I recorded it in January when the heating had broken in my house), but I've had so much work to do (lololol) that I've not really had a chance to sit down and edit it until now... This one was pretty much an experiment in most ways: for those uninitiated into the ways of chiptune, all of the synth sounds in this video were sequenced and played through a Nintendo Game Boy, using a cartridge called LSDJ (Little Sound DJ). Since this was my first real attempt using LSDJ it took me freaking ages to actually make this, and since it took so much of my time and effort I figured I ought to make a vaguely similar effort on the video. So yeah, this is the most ambitious video I've ever made, and please bare in mind I'm a complete rank amateur at this when you're watching, so sorry if things aren't as clean as they could be :)Now, I don't want to make any promises, because apparently when it comes to YouTube I'm seriously bad at keeping promises, but I have a massive list of videos I want to do soon, and preliminary work has already started on a few of them. One of the biggest perks of my course (apart from the fact that I can now legitimately call jamming on the uke all day 'work') is that I only have to be in for 2 days a week, and I have the rest of the week to myself to work in my own time. Why am I telling you this? Because it means I have a lot more time on my hands to make videos, so *drumroll* my plan now is to upload a new video every week! Preliminarily this will be on a Wednesday, but as I get more and more work I may have to change days occasionally, so please don't shoot me if I do so...Now the bad news about me leaving home is that I have to sleep in a shared room (i.e. bunkbeds). Whilst the 'sharing a bedroom with someone' aspect of this has worked out fine so far, it does mean that I've not been able to bring all of the instruments/equipment with me for lack of space, so for the time being I don't have all the resources to hand to make the most complex videos...I'll still be doing some multitrack songs, but I'll limit those to maybe once a month or something (haven't quite figured out the ins and outs yet...) so that they don't kill me with the workload that comes with making such a video. So for the most part you'll be seeing the standard just me and a uke format, such as this one here - a cover of David Gray's Babylon - a song that I've tried to record three times now as a multitrack and failed each time, so I've done it as a uke cover instead... I'd like to think I have an excuse this time round, but frankly I don't, so sorry guys :)Today's cover is of I Fight Dragons, Chicago's premiere NES-Rock Band, and a personal favourite of my good friend Mike (who you may recognise from the Ukes Not Nukes days) and I. I Fight Dragons are known for their amazing live shows, in which they reproduce sounds from NES and Game Boy sound chips by programming old nintendo controllers to bleep and bloop and make beautiful music, so in true IFD style, all of the 8-bit sounds in this video were played in using a game controller - specifically a Rock Band Keytar (which, if you're interested, was used as a MIDI controller to control YMCK's Magical 8-Bit Plug).I've tried to do a lot more interesting editing with this one - I figured as all four keytar clips are pretty much identical, I needed something to make the video more exciting. This was my first real experimentation with keyframing, so I apologise if it's a little rough round the edges, but I was essentially making it up as I went along and it took me about a month of on and off editing (mostly off, in the end I did the bulk of it in about 2 days, but shush) to get it finished, so please be nice! :)Also, if you're ever looking to get into some new music, I definitely recommend listening to I Fight Dragons. But rest assured, I'm back, with a list as long as my arm of new videos I want to make and time to do it in, so yay!Now then, in the works currently is a massive project undertaken by Alex Light and myself (remember him? The other guy that's sometimes in my videos? Somehow I winded up doing another one with him. Also it occurred to me that I've been making videos for about 9 months now, and I've only featured the ukulele (and one brief guitar moment).So I decided to pick a song that, on top of being a really awesome song, had the opportunity for me to play a couple of different instruments (11 to be precise). Oh yeah, and I wanted to see whether my software worked/how hard it would be to make a video like this.Turns out it's quite hard. Normally a video takes me about two hours to complete (including arrangement time and assuming I mess it up plenty of times...), but this beast took me a whole THREE DAYS to complete!
