The warm temperatures meant that the snowflakes were huge, and it came down so heavy in such a short time. In the morning, thanks to cloudy skies and temperatures that hovered around 33 degrees, the thick snowpack was stuck to all of the trees, phone and electrical wires, railings, and without wind - the snow stayed put all day long and will likely stay this way for another day - or at least until the sun comes back out tomorrow.
This was captured over Northeast Pond in Milton, NH.

The first timelapse was captured on a 3-axis motion control dolly (eMotimo ST4 motorized head and Dynamic Perception Stage One motorized dolly. This allowed me to start the composition aiming up toward the tree tops and the sky and rotate down and to the right to catch up to the Milkyway.
The second timelapse was captured on the new Benro Polaris motorized tripod head and tracker. In this timelapse the Milkyway and sky don't move - the ground does. This is because the tracker is designed to track the sky by rotating at the same speed as earths rotation. So as the Milky way rotates around our globe, the camera stays locked onto it, so what you end up seeing as movement is earths rotation. The Finale: A Rare Look at Fireworks Exploding Up from the BargeRon Risman2022-07-05 | A GoPro Hero 8 was placed aiming straight up on a platform in the center of a floating barge full of explosive fireworks for July 4th. Moab Utah is a many things to many people, but what ever it is that brings you to Moab (vacation, off-roading, rock climbing, biking, hiking, photography, painting, rafting, camping) you may not realize that if you just visit the two national parks (Arches and Canyonlands) you're missing out on 98% of what Moab has to offer.
The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in Moab manages over 1.8 MILLION acres of breathtaking red rock canyons, cliffs, fins, spires and hoodoos - and all of this public land is located outside of the National Parks.
Then there's the LaSal Mountains, the second largest in all of Utah - with elevations reaching 13,000 feet. Tired of the 100 degree desert heat? Take a drive on the LaSal Mountain Loop Rd and enjoy cooler weather and spectacular mountain scenery.
Moab, Utah is one of the most amazing locations you can visit - whether you’re seeking adventure, solitude, or anything in between. If you’re a painter, photographer, hiker, biker, rock climber, rafter, off-roader, or traveling in an RV or camper - Moab has what you’re looking for. As a photographer Moab offers some of the finest landscapes anywhere on earth - with millions of acres of red-rock sandstone arches, spires, fins, canyons, and hoodoos.
Love stargazing? You'll love the dark skies around Moab. Head into Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, or Dead Horse Point State Park and enjoy some of the darkest skies in the country. The International Dark Sky Association has designated these locations as dark-sky parks, and you’ll soon discover why. But don't stop there - anytime you leave town, you'll discover that the lack of any significant light pollution and the dry high-desert climate ensures a wonderful view of the night sky on most nights. You’ll also be happy to know that Moab is also one of the safest places to hang outdoors - as there really isn’t much in the way of predatory wildlife.
I hope you enjoy the short timelapse film. Thank you for watching.

Washington, in the Presidential Range.
I drove up there a few nights ago to capture the Milky Way as it passed behind the peak of the mountain. This night was also the peak of the Perseid Meteor showers, and if you look close you'll see a long meteor show up (right side of screen at about the 4.5 second mark). It's only in one frame, so if you blink you'll miss it. :-)
Lightning was closing it from the SW, W, and North - so the night was cut short by clouds, but the adventure still worth chasing. We drove 2.5 hours, shot for about 2.5 hours, and then drove another 2.5 hours home.Camera Motion for Timelapse CinematographyRon Risman2020-07-16 | Raise your game and increase your production value by learning to capture time lapses with real-time camera movement at one of our Motion Control Timelapse & Cinematography workshops. You'll learn how to get the most from the latest motion control gear, including how to combine multi-axis moves during a day to night "holy grail" timelapse.
TimelapseWorkshops.com
This fast paced film showcases a variety of multi-axis motion control shots. Footage was captured using various 1-axis, 2-axis, 3-axis, and 4-axis rigs from Kessler Crane, eMotimo, Dynamic Perception, and Rhino Camera Gear. Some of the shots were controlled using the Timelapse+ VIEW exposure ramper with motion control interface for Dynamic Perception NMX controller.
For years cinematographers have been using camera movement to help drawer the viewer in to the emotion of a scene. A slow dolly in (push in) toward an actor can help draw the viewer into the emotion they are feeling, while a dolly out helps to distance the viewer from the scene or make you feel the emptiness of a situation or the loneliness of an actor. Just those two camera moves alone illustrate how directors use camera language to help with emotion. A running shaky hand held shot following a character(s) as they flee from a situation helps to allow the viewer feel the tenseness and gravity of the situation.
Camera movement is also used to add perspective and depth to a scene, to hide or reveal a part of a scene, to track a subject, to help control the story from the camera's perspective, or just to add an element of movement to an otherwise static scene in order to keep the viewer interested (think sit down interviews).
When I first experienced real-time camera movement in a time-lapse I was blown away. I just couldn't imagine how the camera was moving in real time, yet the scene unfolded over a period of hours. As someone who used to do magic as a kid, this was magic to me. I credit Cinematographer Tom Lowe for introducing me to motion control time lapse.
Since then I have been shooting with and teaching motion control time lapse to photographers and cinematographers from all around the world at my workshops. I don't just teach the technical side of setup and settings (how to), but also the why, when, and where. Some scenes don't benefit from camera movement, but in many cases just a small adjustment to camera position and composition can make a motion control shot a far superior option. I am by no means an expert cinematographer and I'm always looking for ways to learn and improve, but motion control is worth the extra effort. It can be as simple as a pan & tilt head that sits on top of your tripod that is moved by it's own motor or as complex as you want to make it with long rails (slider), pan & tilt, and motors for focus and zoom.
After years of shooting and teaching I have decided to dedicate a film to the use of Camera Motion in Timelapse Cinematography. If you have an interest in learning to use camera movement in your cinematography or time lapses I highly recommend signing up for my motion control workshop. You'll have a blast, will learn a lot, and will walk away with the skills and confidence to use motion control on your future shoots.
I want to thank the companies below for helping to put motion-control in the hands of more and more photographers. These companies have helped to make it more affordable and portable than ever before.

LIFT showcases the magnificent beauty of nature, even at her worst.
The film was captured during this year's Storm Chasing Workshop Adventure in June. The trip took us through the great plains, covering over 3000 miles through Nebraska, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, South Dakota, and Kansas.
The rotation and movement of the sky, the inflow into these storms and the strong outflow - with wind gusts as high at 90 MPH, create an exhilarating chase and photographic experience.
For me, storm chasing isn't really about seeing a tornado, it's about being in areas and conditions where all the ingredients come together to create the environment for severe storms. One of the ingredients that helps to create these incredible cyclonic thunderstorms or tornado's is LIFT.
And when these storms start to move out and the sun peaks through at sunset, the light it often produces is nothing short of spectacular.
I have traveled over 9000 miles chasing storms over a 3 year period, and the light this year was the most amazing I have ever witnessed. I feel fortunate to be able to take other photographers on these adventures and to help them learn to capture and more importantly, post process, the time lapses from these storms - and to share a glimpse into the beautiful, artistic side of mother nature.
If you like the film please feel free to share it. It's one of my favorite films so far, and hopefully it will be one of yours.

Ron Risman timelapseworkshops.comA Love Letter to the Night SkyRon Risman2018-04-17 | To mark the start of International Dark Sky Week I am thrilled to announce my second Love Letter film “A Love Letter to the Night Sky.” This new film was created as my way of saying thank you to all of the areas of this country where we can still see the stars above, and to share the feeling I have while I sit out under the night sky while capturing its beauty. Once the sun goes down that's my time to shoot - from moon rises and moon sets to the movement of the stars and planets as our earth rotates.
Ever since falling in love with night-sky photography I have seen a remarkable change in the types of locations that I feel connected to. I was recently out in Las Vegas leading workshops and sessions at a conference. I love educating others, but once my sessions were over I couldn't wait to get out of Vegas. The congestion, noise and light pollution made me feel as if I was being trampled by people, noise, and flashing lights. I couldn’t think and it felt suffocating and stressful. I was surprised at how it affected me since I used to be a person that enjoyed that experience. I have been to Las Vegas well over 40 times in my lifetime and I used to think that it energized me. That is how profound the change has been for me ever since discovering the night sky.
4 years ago I created my first "Love Letter" film titled "Love Letter to Moab" to show my appreciation for the beautiful landscapes and dark skies of Moab, Utah - an amazing location that is now my home away from home while teaching my spring night-sky workshops. This May will mark my 6th year teaching in this beautiful location. During the past six years I have also expanded outward to lead workshops in other dark-sky locations including Death Valley, Grand Canyon, Lake Powell, Kanab, Bryce Canyon, and the Wind River area of Wyoming. And I will continue expanding locations in order to showcase the beauty of this country when combined with the light from the night sky.
As a photographer and educator it is a privilege for me to be able to put together a remarkable night sky experience for photographers from all over the world, and to watch them as they continue capturing the night sky long after the workshop has ended. Many of these photographers come back annually in order to rekindle that connection with our night skies, and that in itself is success for me.
I hope others will join me at one of my upcoming dark-sky photography & time lapse workshops for an educational experience they will never forget. These workshops are a place where you'll learn to capture and create breathtaking time lapse films, while connecting to the night sky and to other photographers who share the same passion for astrophotography and time lapse. You can get more information at TimelapseWorkshops.com
As part of International Dark Sky Week I hope you'll share this film on your social media and with your city officials and let’s try to find a way to turn off city lights for an hour or two, once or twice a year, in order to give those that live in the city a chance to view the beauty of our galaxy. It would be an amazing opportunity for everyone to see what they're missing.
I will also pledge to fly out to the first major metropolitan city that finds a way to turn off their lights for at least an hour during a summer night, and to create a film marking this special event. Let’s help our cities light up under the glow of our night skies.
I also recommend checking out darksky.org, which is the website for the International Dark-Sky Association (IDA). The IDA was launched in 2008 to help cities and towns preserve and protect the nighttime environment as well as our heritage of dark skies through environmentally responsible outdoor lighting. The IDA works with the public, city planners, legislators, lighting manufacturers, parks, and protected areas to provide and implement smart lighting choices. darksky.org.

The Adventure took us over 3500 miles in 7 days, and through eight different states including Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, Missouri, Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. During this trip we saw SOFTBALL sized hail, 4 - 5 tornados, an amazing cumulonimbus cloud mushrooming right in front of us, and incredible thunder and lightning storms.
We met up with Tempest Tours in Denver where their team of meteorologists led us on a chase to find the best storm each day for a week. The direction we headed is all based on weather conditions such as wind shear, high dew points, moisture, lift, and instability. Without any one of these variables a tornado cannot form. On day four (June 28) we hit the jackpot while in western Iowa. We were filming a mesocyclone near Stuart, Iowa when a funnel came out of the cloud. Within minutes the funnel touched down, officially becoming a tornado, and was heading directly for us. We hopped into the van and drove a few miles down the road where we got out and filmed the tornado coming toward the road. Eventually a second "rope" tornado formed, and lingered to give us a few minutes to capture it.
Later that afternoon we saw another 2 additional tornados, and hail on the side of the road the size of baseballs and softballs. Think about that. In New England it's rare when we get hail at all, and usually it's pea size or at most, quarter size. To see hail the size of softballs was mind blowing.
I put together this film from some of the footage I captured. I hope you enjoy watching it.The Storm Chasing Experience with Tempest ToursRon Risman2017-01-03 | This past July I went storm chasing for six days with Tempest Tours, a company that has been storm chasing since 2000. I have been in love with severe weather ever since I was a child, so to finally go storm chasing was a thrill. Just the mention of storm chasing to other people instantly brings up comments about tornadoes, safety and how "you have to be nuts to do that", but for me it was less about seeing a tornado and more about seeing the development of storms, the clouds and lightning associated with super cell thunderstorms. Sure, I had hopes of seeing a tornado, but if it happened that would just be icing on the cake.
Storm chasing is so much more than just knowing about boundaries, dew points, and reading a radar screen or satellite loop. Chris Gullikson, the weather man and leader of our trip, knows all about Inflows, Dry lines, outflow boundaries, CAPE, convection, hook and bow echoes, cloud types, how to truly read severe weather data at every altitude, and knowing how that affects the development or weakening of a storm. It is his job to look at the map and to make decisions as to where we're heading. He also has to know the road structure, so that we're not put into a position where there's no safe way out.
Storm chasing is not about how close you get a tornado. That's the job of weather scientists that need to measure data inside a tornado. Storm chasing is about staying far enough away from the storm to enjoy it's structure and movement.
Gear
The footage was captured using 5 cameras: Sony A7RII, Sony RX10III, Canon 5DMKIII, DJI Osmo, and GoPro Hero 3. One of the biggest challenges for capturing time lapse was the fact that there was no time to setup. When storm chasing we tried to stay Southeast of the storm - ahead of the rain and hail. When the van stopped and we were allowed to get out, we usually only had 1-3 minutes before we had to keep moving to stay ahead of the storm. This meant shooting time lapse at fast 1 second intervals, and having the camera on the tripod, pre-focused and ready to go the minute the van doors were open.SkyLight: A Timelapse Workshop Collaborative Film (2017)Ron Risman2016-12-29 | SkyLight was filmed by photographers new to time lapse who came together from all around the world to learn and capture timelapses of the beautiful skies of the American Southwest.

As i nod off at my desk I begin to day dream about the breathtaking beauty of the American Southwest. Suddenly I am whisked away to this enchanting land of red rock hoodoos and truly grand canyons as far as the eye can see. Much of this magnificent area has an elevation of 8000-10,000 ft above sea level and with no city in sight for hours - the skies are so dark that viewing our galaxy is as easy as opening our eyes and looking up. This film was captured while in Southern Utah and Northern Arizona this past September and early October where I was leading two DSLR timelapse photography workshops (TimelapseWorkshops.com), and spent another few days ahead of time scouting locations.
In total we drove over 30 hours to get to all of these locations - yet each minute was filled with anticipation of what mother nature would bring.
Anyone who has met me knows my love for the southwest. I have been photographing this area for the past 20 years and since launching my timelapse workshops in 2013 I continue to attract amateur and professional photographers from all over the world (including Brazil, Turkey, China, Denmark, Scotland, and the United States) who fly in to learn how to capture and create breathtaking time lapses using their DSLR's. These workshops are an adventure in learning, an escape from the daily grind of life, and a way to rejuvenate and find your creative voice.
Take a look at our upcoming workshops. If you would like to join other photographers on a multi-day adventure while learning to produce stunning time lapse photography - register for one of our workshops.

This year 26 photographers from all over the country gathered in Moab, Utah to learn how to best capture and create landscape and night-sky timelapses. This is what they captured!
Timelapse Moab is an annual timelapse photography workshop held in Moab, Utah. The workshops consist of classroom sessions on pre- and post-processing as well as daily on-location shooting in some of the most beautiful areas in the country. The workshops are held around the dates of a new moon and in locations known for having the darkest skies in the country.
This fall, from September 25-30th, 2016, this timelapse workshop will be heading to Southern Utah & Northern Arizona - giving photographers access to the most incredible scenery as they learn advanced timelapse skills - in class and out in the field. Only 12 spots are being made available for this workshop and less than that are currently open. Head on over to TimelapseWorkshops.com to check availability and to register for this workshop.

Death Valley is well known for having one of the hottest recorded temperatures on Earth, but few realize that the park is also known as having some of the darkest skies in the country.
In early October a group of 15 photographers flew into the southwest to learn how to capture and produce timelapses, and more specifically, dark-sky astro timelapses. Most of the students at the workshop had never captured a timelapse, but after the first few hours in class they were out capturing the the night sky - in motion.
This film was produced using timelapses from seven of the photographers during the two workshops (their names are below). Students register for these workshops not only to learn how to produce breathtaking timelapses, but also to experience the night sky first hand. Today, most of the country lives in areas where light pollution has made it impossible to view the night sky. All we see when we look up are a few of the brightest stars and planets. Our workshops are held in locations where the darkest skies in the country exist. We choose locations based on the sky darkness while also choosing dry climates that help guarantee a successful shoot each night

For this video I attached the DJI Osmo to a Delkin Fat Gecko Triple Suction Cup mount to the outside windshield of the car in order to test how stable it would be while driving. I generally was driving between 35 and 45 MPH and the gimbal performed flawlessly.
The beach shots were app captured at 4k (3840x2160, 24fps) resolution with the exception of 1 clip that I captured at 1920x1080/60fps and slowed it down in post to 24fps. I upscaled this clip to 4k in order to make it fit full-screen on the 4k timeline. The Edge of Darkness Timelapse Film (Moab, Utah) - 4K Ultra HDRon Risman2015-07-31 | I have a passion for capturing the beauty of the night sky, yet I find myself feeling uncomfortable with being alone at night in nature. This film showcases the beauty and magic of the night sky, with a soundtrack that helps to convey the uneasy feeling of being alone under the darkness.
The Edge of Darkness, for me, is that line between loving the night and being uncomfortable of the unknown.
The film was captured over 12 days in southern Utah this past May. While I rarely shoot alone, there's a desire to find unique compositions that require that you leave the group and head out into the darkness, into the brush, and often times under moonless skies.Master of the Skies - Moab, UtahRon Risman2015-07-16 | Reigster today for the 4-day "Dark Sky" Timelapse Photography Workshop in Death Valley timelapseworkshops.com
MASTER OF THE SKIES is a short collaborative timelapse film captured during two workshops in Moab, Utah during the wet and stormy EL NINO weather pattern of May 2015.
The film showcases the work of 14 photographers, many of whom never shot timelapse before, who braved the wind, cold, lightning storms, hail storms, and some glimpses of the beautiful night sky to capture some of the most stunning footage of the area.
