#historianreacts #expertanswers #alexanderthegreatWhat Was Life Like for a Servant at a Royal Palace? | Secrets of Kensington Palace with Dan SnowHistory Hit2024-09-19 | Dan Snow explores behind the scenes at the majestic Kensington Palace, the glittering centre of the royal court in early Georgian England. It's a very special time to visit - the Historic Royal Palaces team has been delving deep into the archives to lift the veil of the public facing court and explore the lives of the many people who lived and worked here. Beyond the kings and queens in the stately rooms, there were hundreds of other men and women - people born high and low - who played a vital role in keeping the court going.
This exhibition brings together an amazing collection of objects, many of which have never been seen before. From an ice saw used by Frances Talbot, the 'Keeper of the Ice and Snow' to the revealing scribbled notes of the Master Cook’s Book. From the intricate stitching of Queen Charlotte’s dress, contrasting with the plainer uniform of her dresser, Dan gets up close to objects which build a much more vivid picture of life in this palace, upstairs and downstairs. The extraordinary mural of George I’s court on the striking King’s Grand Staircase, as well as detailed portraits of individuals who worked in the palace, shed light on the real, often forgotten, people who worked, lived or attended court within these palace walls.

#romanbritain #ancientrome #historianreactsWhat Was Life Actually Like For Romans Stationed on Hadrians Wall? with Dan SnowHistory Hit2024-09-05 | Dan Snow explores the physical remains of Hadrian’s vast project of 122AD - over 80 Roman miles of wall, turrets and forts, stretching from coast to coast across northern England. Mile after mile of stone marching over the horizon.
But why did the Romans go to all this effort? We dig into the key questions: was the wall a barrier or a porous border; a hubristic vanity project or a vital line of defence; who lived on and around the wall; and why has it endured in popular culture for nearly two thousand years, right up to Game of Thrones?
Dan meets leading experts along the Wall and visits some of the key sites - from Arbeia in the east (where tombstones reveal people here from as far away as Syria) to Birdoswald in the west (where a blatant carving of a phallic symbol shows the Wall was more than just a barrier).
A Roman historian wrote that when the Emperor Hadrian came to Britain in AD 122 he ‘put many things to right and was the first to build a wall 80 miles long from sea to sea to separate the Romans from the Barbarians’.
In this film we discover what that massive engineering and construction project really meant - and the impact it had on Roman Britain and beyond.

#historyhit #tudorengland #expertanswersExploring Britain’s Biggest Houses With Alice LoxtonHistory Hit2024-08-29 | Join Alice Loxton as she explores the most intriguing and historic estates across Britain.
In the first episode, Alice heads to Sissinghurst Castle in Kent. Originally a grand Elizabethan manor, by the 20th century Sissinghurst had fallen into a ruinous state. Yet it was this wildness and disrepair which enchanted one of the bestselling writers of the 1920s, Vita Sackville-West. Alice explores how Vita, along with her husband Harold, transformed this romantic ruin into a home. Joined by National Trust experts and leading historians, Alice uncovers the secrets of Sissinghurst - and in turn, the fascinating aspects of Vita’s unique character. From her bestselling writing to the creation of a world class garden, from a loving relationship with her husband Harold to many passionate romances with women, Vita was a remarkable woman, trapped between the old and new. This is the story of Vita’s Sissinghurst - a story of Vita in love.
In the second episode, Alice travels to Blenheim Palace, one of the most remarkable historic houses in Britain. Gifted to John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marloborough, after his victory at the Battle of Blenheim in 1704, it is in many ways an epic monument rather than a comfortable home. Blenheim has witnessed its fair share of historical shenanigans. From the falling out between Queen Anne and Sarah Churchill - a relationship dramatised in the Hollywood movie, 'The Favourite', to the antics of schoolboys who sheltered at Blenheim during the Second World War. It is also, perhaps most famously, the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill.
Join Alice Loxton in the third episode as she discovers the secrets of Stourhead, one of the most fascinating country houses in the world. As well as providing the setting for perhaps the most famous scene in Pride & Prejudice, the Stourhead estate has a storied history of its own. Once upon a time, this house was at the forefront of art, of design, of architecture of interiors. We’re talking big, bold new ideas which had never been done before. This place is a hub of creativity, of experimentation. And once more, it’s had a pretty dramatic past, peppered with outrageous parties, terrible tragedy and even a visit of King Alfred the Great. Hold onto your hats, because there’s a lot of history to take in!
In the fourth and final episode, Alice explores Ham House in Richmond, Surrey. About 10 miles from the centre of London, this lavish mansion is a treasure trove of 17th century art and architecture, a dazzling red-brick jewel on the muddy banks of the River Thames. But Ham House also has a remarkable history of espionage and secrets. During the tumultuous years of the English Civil War, the Commonwealth and the Restoration, Ham House lay at the heart of political conflict. In this documentary, Alice Loxton discovers how the Murray family - friends of Charles I and led by a remarkable mother-daughter team of Catherine and Elizabeth Murray - survived this troublesome period. Despite being fiercely loyal to the crown - even ferrying secret letters to the exiled Charles II - the Murray’s also maintained a friendship with the Cromwell family. It was an audacious act of bravery, resilience and espionage.

#historyhit #moviereview #medievalhistorySurvivalist Ray Mears Explores Ancient Britain | Full History Hit SeriesHistory Hit2024-08-22 | Britain is an island where history is well and truly part of the landscape and an island where human feet have walked for a million years. We are constantly making groundbreaking archaeological discoveries that are helping us to better understand the way in which our distant ancestors lived.
Join bushcraft and survival expert Ray Mears in the first episode of a brand new series as he explores Britain's distant past, from the earliest evidence of people in Britain, right up to the moment that everything would change.
In the first episode of this series, Ray speaks to Dr David Waterhouse about the discovery made at Happisburgh beach in Norfolk of footprints dating back 900,000 years, before demonstrating how our distant ancestors would have made and used flint tools for hunting and skinning game.
In the second episode, Ray explores Britain as it entered a new chapter in its history. 12,000 years ago, hunting tools had evolved, from hefty spears to the slick and stealthy bow and arrow. This revolution in technology would change the way humans hunted forever. In a period in which Britain was also thawing and exiting from an Ice Age, the warm and moist forest environments became home to the last of the hunter gatherers in Britain. They ate a diverse range of food, including wild meat, fish and fresh fruit from plants. This would nonetheless change as the Britain entered the New Stone Age in circa 4000 BC and an agricultural revolution swathed the British Isles.
In the third and final episode, Ray explores the relics of Iron Age Britain. On his journey, Ray visits the magnificent forts at Malvern Hills and a recreation of an Iron Age village at Butser Ancient Farm in Chalton.

#medievalhistory #medievalweapons #bowandarrowA Complete History of England with Dan Snow | Full History Hit SeriesHistory Hit2024-08-08 | England is a country stuffed full of history. From the Stone Age to the Nuclear Age there are thousands of inspirational sites that have helped to shape the past and present.
Join Dan Snow on an epic road trip, from Stonehenge in Wiltshire to the Cold War Bunker in York. He’ll be racing across the country exploring some key places in the care of English Heritage, where you can feel the heartbeat of history!
In episode one, Dan begins in the Stone Age at the enigmatic and inspiring Stonehenge. With curator Heather Sebire, Dan investigates who created this incredible structure and why. We then jump a few hundred years forward to the Iron Age stronghold of Old Sarum, a defensive and civic centre spanning two thousand years of history - right through to the Normans. The next stop is a big one, 1066. We can’t do a history of England without one of the most significant battles of the medieval period, the Battle of Hastings, where English and European history would change in a day, on a hillside in Sussex. After William the Conqueror and his Normans defeated the Anglo-Saxons, they needed strong defensive structures to keep their people under control and fend off invasion, so they built castles, first in wood and then in stone. So Dan's next stop is to the site of one of England's most strategic fortresses, powerful (and surprisingly luxurious) Dover Castle. At Dover, Dan discovers the colourful world of a 12th century castle and Historian and Dover Castle expert Marc Morris explains how this mighty castle was used 800 years ago.
In episode two, Dan kicks off with the Tudors at Kenilworth Castle in Warwickshire where he discovers the story of one of the most spectacular displays of decadence of the times and explores the reality of the relationship between Kenilworth’s owner, Robert Dudley and the ‘Virgin Queen’ Elizabeth I. After the relative stability of Elizabeth came the unpredictability and chaos of the Stuarts and the English Civil War, travelling to Staffordshire Dan explores the hiding place of a King on the run. Finally arriving in Ironbridge in the West Midlands Dan gets hands on as he tackles the origins of another revolution - this time a bloodless one, but one that would change the world as we know it - the Industrial Revolution.
In the third and final episode, Dan uncovers the stories of some of the winners and losers of the Victorian Age with a visit to Brodsworth house and gardens, before finishing his awesome quest in the city of York, deep inside a secret underground bunker, a time capsule for one of the darkest periods in human history...

#historyhit #historyofengland #dansnowThe Greatest Rebellions of Medieval EnglandHistory Hit2024-08-05 | Since the Roman occupation, England has mostly been dominated by a power-base ruling from the South of the country, principally centred on the great City of London. Yet the northern regions of England, remote and culturally disinct from the South, were, for much of recorded history, staunchly independent, wildly restless and prone to rebellion. Unhappy with regal rule from a distant southern capital, northerners did on more than a handful of occassions, rise up in a series of bloody attempts to challenge or replace their kings or queens in the South.
This series, presented by Daniel Gray, takes a detailed look at the Great Northern Rebellions throughout the medieval and early modern period. Featuring historians Dr Claire Kennan, Sophie Ambler, Prof David Bates, Prof Julia Barrow, Prof Bill Sheils, Julian Humphrys and Gillian Waters.

This was the very moment that Howard Carter found the entrance to the tomb of Tutankhamun.
In this very special film, shot in Egypt and England, Dan Snow commemorates the centenary of the most famous archaeological discovery of them all - walking in the footsteps of Howard Carter as he retraces the story of the discovery, from the beginnings of Carter’s career as a young artist recording reliefs in Hatshepsut’s magnificent temple, to the house he built especially close to the Valley of the Kings thanks to the support of Lord Carnarvon.
The History Hit team has gained access to key places associated with this historic story: Highclere Castle, home of Lord Carnarvon; Tutankhamun’s Tomb in the Valley of the Kings, and his famous golden treasures in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, which we explore with conservator Eid Murtah.
And Dan discovers that there is another side to this story, revealed in Oxford - Howard Carter’s extensive records are stored here. Dan gets up close to key objects in the Bodleian Weston Library’s exhibition ‘Tutankhamun - Excavating the Archives’, including the famous journal entry that, as Carter first gazed into the dark of the tomb, he told Carnarvon “It is wonderful”.
In Oxford’s Griffith Archive, Dan explores the records in detail with curator Daniella Rosenow. The original glass plate negatives reveal how the tomb looked as Carter opened it, with now familiar objects covered in flowers and linens, carefully placed there as the nineteen year old pharaoh was buried in 1323 BC. It presents a very different image of the objects that we now picture cleaned up and conserved - here they are in a much more immediate moment just as Carter uncovered them. And in a beautiful additional project, Ellie Murphy, a florist from Oxford, painstakingly makes an exact recreation of the floral wreath that adorned Tutankhamun’s outer coffin. It helps remind us of the humanity at the heart of this story: the incredible dedication of the archaeological team and the death of a young pharaoh that still inspires us today.

And amidst all this chaos, the first recorded act of public rebellion in English history sent revolutionary ripples across the entire medieval world. This uprising is remembered as the “Peasants Revolt” of 1381, but now History Hit’s medieval expert, Matt Lewis, looks beyond the ancient propaganda in this new 3-part series which reveals the previously unknown stories of the ordinary folk of the Peasants' Revolt.
Matt and the History Hit team have been working closely with investigative historians from the groundbreaking 1381 Project, The People of 1381 who have found documents that highlight the revolt as the first popular manifesto for a better society.
These films reveal that this extraordinary rebellion lit the flames of revolutionary change stretching across the whole of England and beyond, reverberating far past those hot summer days of 1381.

What followed was Britain’s last solo war: the last major conflict fought over British imperial territories, the last major conflict Britain fought by itself rather than as part of a coalition.
The British response to the Argentinian invasion was almost instant, commandeering luxury liners, trawlers and ferries in addition to numerous naval vessels. Britain put to sea a task force of 28,000 men.
40 years on, we meet veterans from both sides who experienced the conflict first-hand and were witness to some of the most pivotal moments of the war.

#historyhit #ancienthistory #spartanAncient Pompeii: Countdown to Disaster!History Hit2024-06-24 | The story of Pompeii’s destruction is renowned across the world. In 79 AD, this prosperous Roman town was destroyed by a massive, volcanic eruption. Pompeii became frozen in time, only to be rediscovered c.1500 years later.
Vesuvius’ eruption has preserved Pompeii in its final moments. The wealth of archaeology that has been unearthed over the past few centuries here is extraordinary. From gladiator graffiti to political adverts. And amidst all of this archaeology, we even have the names of actual Pompeiians surviving. The stories of everyday people - men and women - who lived and worked all around the town some 2,000 years ago. Not emperors, empresses and generals. But bakers, barmen and prostitutes whose stories are usually lost to history.
Tristan Hughes explores the stories of some of these men and women who called Pompeii home. Wealthy villa owners such as the entrepreneurial businesswoman Julia Felix, who owned a luxurious estate near the amphitheatre and converted part of her property into a restaurant. The plucky bar owner Sextus Amarantus, who imported wines from as far away as Gaza to sell at his establishment. Or the famous freeborn gladiator Marcus Attilius, who defeated a great champion in his very first arena fight.
This documentary explores the lives of the people that made up Pompeii. With access to some of the site’s most extraordinary buildings and interviews with leading experts, it’s a story about everyday life before the eruption.

As always he is joined by Keeper of Firearms & Artillery, Jonathan Ferguson who talks him through the history of all the pistols, rifles and machine guns employed in the conflict.
First up is the Luger P08, a distinctive semi-automatic pistol that became emblematic of German forces during World War II. Chambered in 9mm, it is known for its unique toggle-lock mechanism and ergonomic design. Initially adopted by the German military in 1908, it saw extensive use in both World Wars. Despite being replaced by the Walther P38 toward the latter end of the conflict, the Luger P08 remained a coveted war trophy and is celebrated for its engineering and historical significance.
Second is the Karabiner 98k bolt-action rifle, the standard infantry weapon of the German Wehrmacht during World War II. Introduced in 1935, it was chambered in 7.92×57mm Mauser and known for its accuracy, reliability, and ruggedness. Widely used on all fronts, the Kar98k became a symbol of German military prowess. It influenced post-war bolt-action designs and remains popular among collectors and historians for its historical impact.
Third up, the StG 44 (Sturmgewehr 44), developed by Nazi Germany during World War II and considered the first modern assault rifle. Chambered in 7.92×33mm Kurz, it combined the firepower of a submachine gun with the range and accuracy of a rifle. Introduced in 1944, it significantly enhanced infantry firepower, influencing post-war assault rifle designs, including the AK-47. Despite its late introduction and limited numbers, the StG 44 had a lasting impact on small arms development.
Last but not least is the MP 40, a German submachine gun, used extensively by Axis forces during World War II. Chambered in 9mm Parabellum, it featured a compact design, folding stock, and high rate of fire, making it ideal for mechanized and airborne troops. Introduced in 1940, it succeeded earlier MP 38 models. Known for its reliability and ease of use, the MP 40 became a symbol of German infantry, influencing post-war submachine gun designs globally.

Whether you know it or not, this day would almost certainly be the most demanding of your entire existence - when the horrors, complexities and triumphs of life would be laid bare and courage and heroism would come to the fore…
What all of your senses were exposed to on D-Day, would stay with you forever…
Since the desperate evacuation of Allied Forces from the northern French port of Dunkerque four years ago, plans of retaliation were made and slowly put in motion… From 1942 onwards, as the tide of the war was showing signs of turning, hundreds of thousands of allied soldiers, many from across the Atlantic, began to arrive in Britain to undertake training for a full scale land, air and seaborne invasion of Europe - the largest of its kind in the history of warfare.
With the fate of the world hinged on this moment, nothing could be left to chance. Whatever your name, age, rank or occupation - every man had a specific role to play in this great endeavour. But as is the nature of warfare, despite the years of meticulous research, organisation and preparation, not all would go to plan…
In this episode, Luke Tomes heads across the channel by sea as an Allied infantryman - ready to storm the beaches of Normandy. As part of an assault division, the first wave of troops to land across the numerous allocated sectors of coastline, Luke would find out how Allied soldiers prepared for this monumental operation, what they faced when they landed on the beaches and the sacrifices made to overcome and breach Hitler’s infamous Atlantic Wall.
The question is, could you survive as an Allied soldier on D-Day?
