"A celebrated criminal justice advocate who spent 23 years in a New York prison for a murder he did not commit has finally been exonerated.
Jon-Adrian “JJ” Velazquez was found guilty in the 1998 murder of retired police officer Albert Ward in Harlem. Ward was shot and killed after trying to stop an armed robbery at a gambling parlor he owned in Harlem.
At the time, multiple eyewitnesses pinned the shooting death on then-22-year-old Velazquez, who was in the Bronx having a long phone conversation with his mother as the crime was happening. Phone records supported his alibi. Nonetheless, jurors found Velazquez guilty and he was sentenced to 25 years to life in Sing Sing prison."

At least one activist raised concerns that city leaders may prioritize preserving the city’s low-key reputation over addressing the real issues at hand, including ongoing racial discord.
Love Tabernacle Church, a single-story wood-framed structure, was fully engulfed when the Paris Fire Department arrived at the scene at 11:15 p.m. and put the hoses on the flames. "

"Cornell University‘s Vice President of University Relations is under fire from a Black student alliance that says his unequivocal defense of free speech has endangered their safety.
Speaking to more than 200 Jewish parents of Cornell students via a videoconference on Sept. 30, Joel Malina was asked by the event’s moderator, Hillel Executive Director Rabbi Ari Weiss, if the university would allow a Ku Klux Klan member to appear on campus.
“If there were a faculty member that invited a KKK representative to speak or a student group that invited a KKK representative to speak, yes, we would allow that,” said Malina, who was meeting with the parents concerned about the university’s handling of pro-Palestinian protesters."

241011__ID07BullpenWATCH: Innocent Black Grandpa SLAMMED, Abused By Cops After They Admit MistakeIndisputable with Dr. Rashad Richey2024-10-11 | Tyrone Phifer, 60, was violently arrested after New York cops confused him with another Black man who is 20 years younger. Dr. Rashad Richey and Francesca Fiorentini discuss on Indisputable. Tell us what you think in the comments below.
"It was three days before Christmas when Tyrone Phifer, a then-60-year-old Black man, was assaulted, abused and arrested by police in New York after they said he “fit the description” of another Black man named “Leroy” — who was 20 years his junior.
And even when a Nassau County police officer confirmed Phifer’s identification within one minute of confronting him — even addressing him by his first name multiple times — they continued to arrest him.
The police incompetence became even more evident when it was revealed the man they were looking for was not even named Leroy but Wilfred Elwin. And their dishonesty became evident through the body camera footage that contradicted statements cops made to prosecutors."

Dr. Rashad Richey and Sen. Nina Turner discuss on Indisputable. Tell us what you think in the comments below.
"Ketchup behemoth Heinz was recently criticized for omitting a Black father from a wedding scene in a U.K. advertising campaign. After a critique of the image went viral on social media, the company apologized, but it left a bad taste in many people’s mouths.
The controversial ad featured a Black bride in a wedding dress enjoying a forkful of spaghetti surrounded by her white in-laws on one side and her white husband and Black mother on the other. Heinz is hawking a new line of jarred pasta sauces in England, and the mural-sized posters ran in several London subway stations. Despite the red sauce stain on her pristine white wedding dress, the bride seems oblivious to the disapproving stares from her new family."
