Not Alone from Final Fantasy IX (Piano Opera)(Nobuo Uematsu) Kara Comparetto 2021-11-12 | After a little break since releasing some hefty projects (Dancing Mad and the FFVI Complete Soundtrack, in case you haven't seen them!), I'm back with a classic, nothing fancy but one I've wanted to get out for some time, since people always give me grief for having recorded the jumpy version of Not Alone from the Piano Collections. Just kidding! I know some of you enjoyed it, but there's something about this calm version that brings back good memories from the game for a lot of you. I played the game as a kid but really should play again- I don't remember much at all :(After several years of making videos, I can say my recording quality is satisfactory, but I still hate on myself for the quality of the video. It's dull and uninteresting in my opinion. I need to up my game in the dress/hair category and get some better lights. Trying to do every aspect of these videos is extremely hard- preparing, recording, filming, editing- that I sometimes dread it. I don't want to feel that way making videos because I love the responses I get and think I could work harder to make a better presentation! Sorry for the public confession...it feels good to get it out. I'm thankful to say that a long time follower of mine, Ninjafish, has offered to help me put together my videos after I film them. This is the first one he made! It saved me so much time, and I'm so grateful to have people like him willing and able to help me when needed. So, thank you!!

Main Theme from Final Fantasy II (Piano Opera)(Nobuo Uematsu) Kara Comparetto 2022-11-15 | I recorded this one mainly because I really enjoyed the arrangement from the Piano Opera book. I know the actual OST is very short and quite different than what you'll hear here, but there's still something very "Uematsu" about this arrangement, and I think it does the theme justice. Final Fantasy II is not even one of the more popular of the series, but I think this melody is up there with some of the other great themes. Some of you may wonder if I only play Final Fantasy music! I play all video game music on my live streams on Twitch. But the official arrangements made for the Final Fantasy series are, most of the time, superior to most other video game arrangements that I've played. This is why I'm always inspired to make professional recordings of these arrangements over other video game themes. Wood Carving Partita on Harpsichord ~ Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Michiru Yamane) Kara Comparetto 2022-05-26 | My dad built this harpsichord for my grandmother about 40 years ago, and it ended up stored in my garage for many years before I decided to set it up again and try my hand at some recordings (pun intended?) I'm glad I rescued it from it being sold on Craig's List in an attempt by my dad to clean out our storage area! A harpsichord is a TOTALLY different animal from a modern piano. For one, the mechanism of sound is a metal hook that plucks the string, rather than a hammer hitting it. Imagine using your fingernail to pluck a string on a guitar, and that's basically the sound a harpsichord makes! Harpsichords generally only have about five octaves of keys- if you're a pianist, you may notice that baroque composers never wrote their keyboard music with really high or low notes. Harpsichords also have much finer strings and tuning pins than a piano, which makes the tuning a lot less stable. I struggled just to keep the instrument in tune to record this piece! I was quite impressed with how well my microphones captured the sound though. I did literally nothing post-production to the recording. Well, I hope you enjoy it and please give me your feedback! The recording sessions took three days. It's the post production that takes the most time, since it involves hundreds of GB of video and audio, and countless hours of editing. I captured four different angles, which was quite useful since at times I would forget to press a button on a camera, or accidentally delete a file. There was always plenty to work with.I couldn't have done it without David, who put the entire video together for me. We spent the last few weeks with him sending me clips of the project and me approving them. This took a huge load off of me, and made the project something fun instead of burdensome. Chrono Cross happens to be one of his favorite soundtracks too, so that was a plus!I was so thrilled with how well my Final Fantasy VI complete soundtrack did (youtube.com/watch?v=J5mOs7O1dvg&t=2384s), and it made me realize what a cool thing it is to have the entire soundtrack in one continuous audio- no fadeouts or endings until the last piece. I'm looking forward to doing the same thing with the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, except with three instruments instead of one! Both Chrono games were wonderful childhood memories of mine. Because of Covid, I did a recital for my piano students by compiling videos of their performances and making one large video for their families to view. It's my tradition to always play a piece at the end, so I chose this piece knowing I would be using it in my Swan Lake series. I've saved it all this time to be posted in order! This waltz is probably the most grand and famous of all the waltzes in Swan Lake- like Waltz of the Flowers is in the Nutcracker. It's hard not to enjoy a Tchaikovsky waltz, so I hope you do! Apocalypsis Noctis (Final Fantasy XV)(Piano)(Yoko Shimomura) Kara Comparetto 2022-03-24 | One of my shortest but most jam packed Final Fantasy performances yet! It's been awhile since I posted a piece from FFXV, but as I was working on a more modern Final Fantasy album, I was inspired to learn this one! I know FFXV has mixed reviews, but I personally loved it, and the music is definitely memorable. I was able to catch a glimpse of Shimomura at a Distant Worlds concert, after meeting Uematsu in the next room. Wish she had been there too! Swan Lake Introduction and Scene no. 1 (Piano)(Tchaikovsky) Kara Comparetto 2022-03-14 | After recording the full length Nutcracker ballet for piano, I realized that the available recordings online for Tchaikovsky's ballets on piano are very rare. They're usually only highlights, not the full ballet. I became inspired to record Swan Lake, and maybe in the future Sleeping Beauty too! These ballets are not short- Swan Lake is around two hours of music. So this project will be a long time in the making, but the more I work on this music, the more I appreciate and grow to love it, as well as discover new and beautiful things I never heard before. It's a personal project, but one I hope others will grow to love too. This music is truly a masterpiece, and gives us a little look into the mind of genius Tchaikovsky! Eternity: Memory of Lightwaves, Final Fantasy X-2 ~ Piano Kara Comparetto 2022-02-22 | I've rather enjoyed working on a more "modern" Final Fantasy compilation. Many of these I discover while live streaming, when my followers suggest new music for me to try. I had played this one in the past, but when it came to recording it, I laughed at the fact that I didn't even know the name of the piece (it's all in Japanese in my book), so I just called it the "FFX-2 Song". This is often the case with me and music. I play SO MUCH of it, that I can hardly keep track of names. I go more by sound. Do I like how it sounds? Then yes, it deserves a recording! I may seem slow in my releases lately but I assure you I have a LOT of projects coming soon, including a NEW ALBUM release next month! The album includes this track, as well as a mix of tracks ranging from FFI-FFX. It will be available on physical CD too! Grand Waltz and Apotheosis: The Nutcracker on Piano, Act II Kara Comparetto 2021-12-28 | And here completes the Nutcracker on Piano, the project I'm the most proud of to date. I remember the first time I decided to record the whole ballet- I just said to myself, "I'm going to do it, I don't care if it's perfect and I'm not gonna stress out over it." If I had tried to be overly perfect in all the details, I don't think I would've ever started. Perhaps this will be an inspiration to someone hesitant to start their own project! Since I completed the recordings, I've released it to streaming platforms, and on physical CD. The recordings were also used in the Hudson Ballet (New York) performance when they didn't do an in person performance last year. And now I can finally say I have released a video for each track too! Of all the music I've recorded, this is the most timeless and the most brilliant composition. I can't wait to add to the set by recording both Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, both by Tchaikovsky as well. Happy New Year! Here's to another year of wonderful music. Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy: The Nutcracker on Piano, Act II Kara Comparetto 2021-12-14 | The most famous theme from the ballet, and works so well on piano too! Thank you, Tchaikovsky, for making such timeless music! The celesta was invented just a few years before this piece was written, and Tchaikovsky was given the chance to showcase its abilities. The Boundless Ocean (Final Fantasy III) (Nobuo Uematsu) (Piano Opera) Kara Comparetto 2021-11-28 | I wonder how many of you know this one, or have played Final Fantasy III, and did you like it? Sometimes with these more obscure pieces I risk people being disinterested, but when I play through these piano opera arrangements on a casual basis, I find so many gems that deserve a recording, popular or not! This one will be featured on my second Final Fantasy album, almost completed! I'm working on a recording of the Main Theme of Final Fantasy V next, and getting ready to start my Chrono Trigger recordings after the holidays. I'd like to incorporate both pipe organ and harpsichord into the soundtrack, so it's taking a bit more preparation. My dad said he'd fix up the harpsichord after Christmas...yay! Dancing Mad on Piano and Pipe Organ Kara Comparetto 2021-09-17 | The digital recording is available to purchase in my store! karacomparettomusic.com/storeWell it's finally here, after over two years of writing, practicing, filming and recording. Since some of you haven't heard any of the story, I'll share it here and hope it will help you appreciate even more the beauty of what you see and hear! I'm so proud of this work.Rewind a few years ago when I was uploading a lot of classic Final Fantasy tracks to YouTube. As you would expect, many of you told me I should cover Dancing Mad. At that point I had probably never even heard it. Many of the pieces I was recording at the time were brand new to me, since I never really had a strong connection to Final Fantasy when I was child, except that my brother played the games and I would watch him sometimes. Eventually I discovered the Distant Worlds performance of Dancing Mad and fell in love, to the point that I would say it's Uematsu's greatest achievement. So, naturally I thought I should make a recording. But when I tried the piano opera version (basically the only version except for the one from the original sound version which is pretty puny), I was not thrilled. There are so many inner and outer voices all happening at the same time, it was impossible to make sense of them all on just one instrument! At the time, I was taking organ lessons, and thought it might be cool to make an arrangement of the piece for both piano and pipe organ, since the organ is such a prominent part of the piece. I've never enjoyed writing music, so I knew this was going to be a huge endeavor. But somehow the inspiration came at me and I pulled most of the arrangement together two years ago.Last year, I started asking around about videographers who would be able to film and record the project. I was receiving enough support from my fanbase at that point that I decided I wanted to go big. I wanted to cosplay both Terra and Kefka and make the video appear like a battle between the two instruments- Terra on the piano and Kefka on the organ. I finally found someone.....and then Covid hit. The church where I was practicing organ closed, and all my plans for the project were put on hold. Eventually I came to grips with the fact that it may not ever happen the way I had planned. I started thinking of ways to record and film it myself, however crude it might turn out. Within the past few months, I stumbled upon @jimmyonguitar, who lived in my own state- a photographer who loved Final Fantasy music and was just starting to upload his own guitar covers on YouTube. We filmed a project together- Midnight Rendezvous from FFVII. After this, it became apparent that he was the one I should ask to make Dancing Mad happen! He had owned his own recording studio in the past, and had every type of amazing camera you could imagine. We started first with the piano part. We used my sister's studio, which has a Steinway and a larger space. Finding a place to record the organ was a bit trickier, but Jimmy did some asking around and found a place willing to let us use the space if he would shoot some photos of their building. The historic pipe organ used to be in Washington DC before it ended up here!You can imagine how thrilled I am to finally present this to you, who are the reason I even do this to begin with. Your constant encouragement and enthusiasm for what I do inspires me to keep playing, keep working hard, keep sharing. I wouldn't be the musician I am today without you, so...thank you. Also thank you to Jimmy for being the mechanism behind this project, and making it happen in a timely manner. I couldn't have done it without him. Hopefully I will have many more projects like this in the future! My brain is going crazy right now thinking of a piano and pipe organ arrangement of the last boss themes from Chrono Trigger. Hollow Bastion from Kingdom Hearts ~ Piano (Yoko Shimomura) Kara Comparetto 2021-09-07 | This was a widely requested Kingdom Hearts theme, and I couldn't not have it on my album! I love how my piano captured the key of B minor in this one. This is also one of the last pieces I recorded with my old mics - Rode M5s. I recently purchased some Shure KSM141 mics, which will be an improvement! I'm contemplating a mashup of Passion from Kingdom Hearts and a classical piece. Just gotta think of the right piece! Final Fantasy VI Complete Soundtrack ~ Piano Kara Comparetto 2021-08-27 | This soundtrack is now available to purchase on my website! karacomparettomusic.com/storeI might be crazy, but I'm just proud of myself for actually following through with this project after I announced I was going to do it! The whole thing was recorded over the course of four days. I originally had it in my mind to do it all in one day, but I gradually found out about all the obstacles, such as filling up my SD card, importing and processing 4K video, family distractions and barking dogs! The video is one hour and forty-seven minutes long, and 16GB large. Eventually I would love to do this with the Chrono Trigger soundtrack and maybe another Final Fantasy soundtrack. There are so many hidden gems in these soundtracks that get very little attention! I tried to transition smoothly between each theme to make it one continuous track rather than each theme separately. It's the type of track you can just leave on in the background while you clean house or work or do school. Thank you to Gerald for making the cool character gifs that appear for each character theme! Penelos Theme from Final Fantasy XII (Piano)(Hitoshi Sakimoto) Kara Comparetto 2021-06-14 | Slowly adding to my "modern Final Fantasy" performances. This was one I discovered on my own and was quite intrigued with this Debussy-like arrangement. It doesn't have any dull moments in my opinion, and can be enjoyed by anyone, avid Final Fantasy XII fan or not!I'd like to add some more FFXIV themes to my modern playlist as well. Overture to HMS Pinafore on Piano (Gilbert and Sullivan) Kara Comparetto 2021-03-30 | This is somewhat of a random upload, I know, but I've had this project to record all the G&S overtures on the back burner for a while now, and I'd like to upload a new one every once in awhile to keep the project alive! Some of the recordings will be for piano duet, with my sister and me, but this overture is one that I love for solo piano. The story is about a sailor who loves the captain's daughter, but they are unable to marry because of their vast difference in status. As with all Gilbert and Sullivan operas, some silly turn of events make it possible for the pair to live happily ever after in the end! The Cosmic Wheel (Final Fantasy XI)(Piano Collections)(Naoshi Mizuta) Kara Comparetto 2021-02-05 | Playing through a lot of the music from FFXI and after, I think XI has the most themes that have captured my attention. Of course many of us know that Uematsu was involved in the compositions. A fun fact is that Yasunori Mitsuda was asked to help also, but he was busy writing the music for Xenosaga! We always laugh when we hear a theme that sounds like Jurassic Park (you'd be surprised how many there are), so don't be alarmed if you hear something familiar in the middle of this arrangement! Troian Beauty (Final Fantasy IV)(Piano Opera)(Nobuo Uematsu) Kara Comparetto 2021-01-28 | Just want to update you all and let you know my Final Fantasy VII album should be out soon on streaming platforms! I had some trouble approving the artwork but it's coming. My near future VGM projects include the modern FF album and the KH album, but I assure you I'm not going to neglect the classics like this one! Pas de Deux: The Nutcracker on Piano, Act II Kara Comparetto 2020-12-27 | The piece that started it all for me. I remember hearing this as a teenager and strongly desiring to play a version of it on the piano. It was when I was first starting to discover piano transcriptions and how cool it was to be able to play fully orchestrated works all by myself on one instrument. Around the same time, I snagged a copy of the 1812 Overture by Tchaikovsky- which still remains largely unplayed except on rare occasion, because of its difficulty! I didn't even know the Nutcracker score was transcribed by Tchaikovsky himself until much later- but of course that just made it all the better. After learning the Pas de Deux, naturally my curiosity was piqued to discover the rest of the ballet, and the rest is history. Now I wouldn't even say it's one of my favorites, nor do I think it's my best recording, but it still hasn't lost its charm for me. I was informed by someone that I skipped the Dance of the Reed Pipes! It will be coming soon. Waltz of the Flowers: The Nutcracker on Piano, Act II Kara Comparetto 2020-12-21 | This particular piece from the Nutcracker, although one of my very favorites, has also given me the most trouble from the beginning! It took a long time for me to get a good take while recording, I lost one of the camera angles, I had to remake the entire video again because of a damaged frame, and then I accidentally shared the wrong file to YouTube and I had to delete and restart. At one point, I was practicing the main theme, and I heard my dad call from the other room, "I think you're hitting a wrong note!" Sure enough, I had been playing a D-sharp instead of a D-natural ever since I was a teenager. My first plan was to record at a slower speed than this, but my dad suggested speeding it up, and I'm glad I did. Overall, the entire process was a huge learning experience, and I'm so glad with how it turned out. Sometimes you have to go through fire to come out triumphant in the end! Traverse Town (Kingdom Hearts)(Piano Collections)(Yoko Shimomura) Kara Comparetto 2020-11-17 | Well, this is the (almost) beginning of a long term project to pull together a Kingdom Hearts album. I played the first Kingdom Hearts a long time ago and loved it, but sadly I don't have vivid memories of the beautiful music. Then I started live streaming and was introduced to more and more of the beautiful piano arrangements in the Kingdom Hearts Piano Collections. At this point, I already have enough tracks that I want to record to make almost an entire album! And it wasn't that hard to choose. What are some of your favorite themes from Kingdom Hearts? Would love to get some more ideas for the album! Maybe I'll even sneak a couple of my own arrangements in there. I fell in love with the full score (transcribed by Tchaikovsky himself) after learning the Pas de Deux, one of my favorite scenes. The more I played, the more I fell in love, until finally I decided it was time to record it. Hearing the music on the piano is a great way to familiarize yourself with it, since it's so clear and comprehensive when played on a piano!
