PAINTING FIGURES UNIFORMS - FIVE EASY STEPS - WW1 STORMTROOPER
updated
When Agora Models contacted me offering to make one of their fantastic large scale kits, I had to say constructing such a thing, although interesting, wouldn’t really be feasible for me. So we agreed that I could instead paint a pre-built test shot of the model, in my own style.
This is their amazing and very impressive large-scale (1/8th) replica of the Super Snake Mustang 550GT - a one-off car used to test a brand of tyres for an advertising campaign in the 1960s (agoramodels.com/1967-shelby-mustang-super-snake/).
You should be aware that I love recreating ratty old cars, as well as military subjects, so I decided to give this vehicle a unique look.
In this ongoing occasional series, I will be taking the car apart and then giving it a battered patina and paint job. In this second part I do the following:
- Continue adding rust and faded paint effects
- Replicating damage using power tools
- And, finally, customising the model using Zero Paints, reproducing lacquer peel and adding home-made race numbers.

I should say this gorgeous models is a construction kit mainly made by screw together construction and it would cost around £1000 to buy, depending on which formula you go for. Needless to say, I might not have been quite so bold with the angle grinder if I had painstakingly built this myself!
These videos don’t really get as many views as others, in fact the last Mustang one tanked, but I don’t really care as I enjoy changing things up and don’t want to be a slave to the algorithm. I prefer to output the projects and videos that I want to. At least, that has been my mantra so far for some time!
Thanks to Agora Models for supplying this sample (a test shot prototype) of their Super Snake Mustang in 1/8th scale, see http://www.agoramodels.com for more information.
Enjoy!

The resin bust is in 1/10th scale and is from Young Miniatures reference YM1870, it is called Red Devils Arnhem 17th Sept. 1944.
This video is intended for beginners and will be the third and final part on how to paint a 1/10th bust for those looking to use acrylics.
Apologies, for the delay but the first two parts never did that well at first, so I sort of postponed the final part of the series, but a few people have asked to see the uniform painted and funnily enough the first two parts are getting some views over time now. I am really grateful to the subscribers and viewers who asked to see part three as it really driven me on. Even if only one or two people show an interest, I am very happy to try and oblige.
In Part One, every step is shown starting with the preparation and priming, as well as using Vallejo Surface primers to block out the main colours.

In Part Two, the face and head were painted.

This is a summary of the techniques I have picked up along the way when using acrylics. So this tutorial from http://www.scalewarmachines.com is aimed at AFV model makers looking to paint realistic faces for their figures. It is not a masterclass, rather a simple technique for effective results. It is designed to be accessible and simple to follow. If you want to watch a masterclass by a maestro, please do check out any of the superb expert figure painter channels on You Tube.
Viewers may be interested to know materials used. I have no preferred paint range and use pretty much anything. Here I intermix Vallejo, Andrea Color and Lifecolor references. They are all great paints and each brand has given this channel great support over the years, for which we are extremely grateful.

If you go to www.dynamo-models.com, you can see what is on offer, as well as pricing, you will also see that many packs have optional parts and they also do 1/10th and 1/12th scale busts. Subjects include The Resistance, Allied Forces, Civilians, France in 1940, Germans and so on.
He has launched with quite an impressive range and we wish his new venture all the best.
In this film, I unbox and review a handful of references, I assemble some and review the quality. I also prime and prep a selection for painting. You can let me know in the comments which you would like to see painted and also if you want a full start-to-finish resin figures tutorial.
This film includes a short “How To” for model makers new to resin figures. If you like to see more in-depth exploration of resin figure techniques, let me know as I shot all the assembly of three references.
I should state that these are great quality with interesting choices of subject. They are 3D modelled, as is common these days, and then cast in resin.

I don’t usually tackle large-scale subjects and so when Agora Models contacted me offering to make one of their fantastic large scale kits, I had to say constructing such a thing, although interesting, wouldn’t really be feasible for me. So we agreed that I could instead paint a pre-built test shot of the model, in my own style.
If you follow the channel, you will know that I love ratty vehicles and that I am more about the painting than the building. Weathering is what really gets my juices flowing and unfortunately for this model, it will get very weathered, into a 'barn find' Mustang.
The model as supplied and sent by Agora is their 1/8th scale Mustang Super Snake 550GT, which I believe to be a one-off car used to test a brand of tyres for an advertising campaign in the 1960s.
agoramodels.com/1967-shelby-mustang-super-snake
In this occasional series, I will be taking the car apart and then giving it a unique patina and paint job.
Part one sees me disassemble and repair broken parts and begin with the weathering, inspired by the vehicles seen on a favourite You Tube channel of mine, Vice Grip Garage, especially the former Roadkill Dodge Charger owner Derek runs.
I paint the first coats using Vallejo and AK primers with a Badger Chrome, Iwata Eclipse side feed and a Badger Extreme Patriot airbrush.
The markings are removed by various means and the bonnet gets a coat of Citadel/Games Workshop Chaos Black.
If you want to skip to painting see the timestamps below - weathering starts at 09:33:
Introduction 08:00
Disassembly 01:46
Repair of axle 03:14
Borken axle 04:04
Test Painting 05:11
Sticker/Decal removal 05:20
Painting begins 09:33
Model Washes 16:15
Bonnet gets paint 17:27
Teasers of Part 2 18:23
End 19:38
Thanks to Agora Models for supplying this sample (a test shot prototype) of their Super Snake Mustang in 1/8th scale see http://www.agoramodels.com for more information.

I will prepare and paint a selection of parts, so you can see what they look like under paint. Some of it went well, other bits were pretty fiddly and there will be breakages! However, as you will see, this is some pretty impressive technology and overall, it was a joy working with these fine products.
Technical audio note: I had some trouble with the work bench sound, so please excuse the less than exemplary audio quality, I have tried to remedy it as best as possible, so you should be able to follow along without too much trouble.
Remember, you can get these products via Hobby Hives which has outlets in China, Japan and Canada. Please browse the range and see the extensive selection of what’s on offer here:

Full disclosure: the supplier (World Hobby Gala) very kindly sent these samples for review FOC, so thanks to them.
Cut straight to painting at 06:13.

If you recall, he asked me to paint the model and we decided to time how long it would take to finish the paint job.
I had thought about splitting this video up into one hour to two hour chunks, as explained in parts 1 and 2, but I decided to condense it all into one final episode, so I can move on to other projects.
The pressure is still on, as I try to get the best effects quickly and work to remedy any errors or experiments that went a bit wrong or which didn't quite turn out as intended.
This instalment covers the final hours of modelling and the following techniques:
Pumice Washes
Chipping
Filters
Oils
Attaching wheels and tracks
Airbrush stippling
Weathering effects and moisture
Sealing and final touches
This series is all about painting and weathering and how to achieve it. It is highly personal and subjective of course but our goal was to loosely match a photo of a King Tiger model - so the paint scheme and markings are fictional.
Thanks to Paul “Herbie” Herbert for allowing his model to be part of this experiment.

He asked me to paint the model and we decided to time how long it would take to finish the paint job.
Just like last time, with the pressure on, there’ll be plenty of mistakes and rushed painting along the way. I did the bulk of the painting and showed Herbie various techniques and products when it came to applying a base coat and a camo scheme.
This instalment covers the next couple of hours of modelling and the following techniques:
Base Coats
Camo Schemes
Fading and highlighting
Decals and dry transfers

Painting and weathering is iterative and multi-layered as you will see. Adding some time pressure and modelling against the clock also led to some mixing of acrylic and enamel painting techniques. To speed things up, you too could try alternating between enamels and acrylics. What you see is pretty much real time, with some minor cuts here and there but the time record is 100% accurate and uses the recorded video files’ metadata as a record. In this series we will roughly cover 1hr’s modelling per 10 minutes (approx’) of video. This is the first hour or so…

How can you get the most from your model space and your creations? What about photos and video?…
Well, this starter guide should help you. I explain the various techniques and set-ups I have used to get good quality results and a less tiring work environment. There’s a bit of basic physics and foundational photography principles - but it is just an introduction to things like colour balance/colour temperature and subjects like software. But I show what works for me.
Also, BenQ were kind enough to send me a sample WiT e-Reading Desk Lamp light which could well appeal to modellers. I thought I’d review this in the context of a film all about lighting for modellers. Other modellers have also been sent these, so check out their reviews too.
Here’s the e-Reading Lamp tech specs and some links:
Dual color dimable LED(2700-5700K)Lamp
Weight: 5.8kg
Available with base or clamp (select the variant you want)
Made from aluminium alloy, zinc alloy and engineering resin

I hope you enjoy this video and find it helpful, I have wanted to make a film about how I light my work for some time as I sort of had to work it all for myself over the years (albeit with some TV industry experience to guide me), to find a system that works for me.

This well-engineered mitre and straight angle cutter is available from Historex Agents (http://www.historexagents.com) and comes from Hungarian manufacturer http://www.rptoolz.com.
It is a great piece of precision kit. It may not suit every budget but it is a 'buy once cry once' kinda tool, which will last a lifetime.
We really put it through its paces and you may think 12 minutes of chopping plastic is too much, but it was such fun to use and review, that we couldn't help ourselves.
Would we buy it? Of course we would. It was kindly loaned to us by Historex Agents, but knowing us, we reckon we'll be buying it sometime pretty soon!

This series will be showing how to paint a 1/10th bust for those looking to use acrylics. In this part, we explore painting the eyes, flesh or skin tones and hair. We decided to cover the uniform in a future video.
Each step is shown, starting with the eyes, as well as all the phases in painting the face.
This tutorial from http://www.scalewarmachines.com is aimed at AFV model makers looking to paint realistic faces for their figures. It is not a masterclass, rather a simple technique for effective results. It should be accessible and simple to follow. If you want to watch a long-winded masterclass, check out one of the expert figure painter channels on You Tube instead.
But if this is your thing, make yourself cup of tea, sit back and watch.
The resin bust is in 1/10th scale and is from Young Miniatures reference YM1870, it is called Red Devils Arnhem 17t Sept. 1944.
I got this from http://www.historexagents.com, they supply a large range of model products.

In this episode, we look at some of the best value airbrushes out there, made by world-renowned American firm, Badger, including their Sotar 2020 Black and Gold “Year of the Sotar” Limited Edition airbrushes, made for fine detail work.
Why such great value? Well, they only cost us, along with the 4 other brushes we will feature soon, about £78 Pounds (GBP) each! That’s incredible value for money for a "State of The Art Results" (a.k.a. Sotar) airbrush!
Stay tuned to learn the backstory of how we got this amazing deal. If you want to go straight to the review of the Sotar(s) - then head directly to 06:04 and skip the backstory.
These are great airbrushes, really unique and different to operate, a joy to use and they fit snuggly, almost pen-like, in your hand. They are really good at detail painting and have bunch of novel features like the easy-to-remove needle, the trigger-tensioner, the exposed needle for paint-tip-dry removal and a precisely controllable paint volume limiter.
We test out both models of Sotar in a variety of ways within the video.
We’re looking forward to featuring more Badger products in the future. Come and see how they perform.
Technical data is in the film.

Sean Connery - 1930 - 2020 In Memoriam
This is intended for beginners and will be a two-part series showing how to paint a 1/10th bust for those looking to use acrylics.
In part one every step is shown starting with the preparation and priming, as well as using Vallejo Surface primers to block out the main colours.
This is a summary of the techniques we have picked up along the way. So this tutorial from http://www.scalewarmachines.com is aimed at AFV model makers looking to paint realistic faces for their figures. It is not a masterclass, rather a simple technique for effective results.

The good news is the Vietnam M113 ACAV diorama is complete, well I’m calling it finished as I want to move on. Yes, there’s more that could be done, but it’s pretty much there. This time, in the fourth and final installment of the Academy M113 ACAV Vietnam diorama in 1/35th scale. I tackle the final assembly, finishing, accessorising and weathering, including the figures and Vietnamese cart and the oxen from Callsign Models. Also used are J’s Diorama paper plant accessories.
Many of these products seen in the videos are available from http://www.historexagents.com, http://www.airbrushes.com and http:/www.deluxematerials.co.uk. See below for more details.

Our previous 2013 video on painting 1/35th scale figures with Vallejo Acrylics is here:
youtu.be/no2zBike6Q0
This is a simple non-elitist step-by-step “Top 10 Tips” video guide to painting figures' faces using Vallejo's excellent Model Color range. It’s aimed at everyday figure painting and our background is predominantly armour modelling. Experimenting with painting busts has definitely changed the way we paint 1/35th scale figures. Here's how...
This beginner tutorial from http://www.scalewarmachines.com is aimed at novice modellers & AFV model makers looking to paint realistic faces for their figures. It is not a masterclass, rather a simple 10 tip technique for effective results. It should be accessible and simple to follow for beginners and intermediates alikes. If you want to watch a long-winded masterclass, check out one of the expert figure painter channels on You Tube instead.
We have tried to add alternative techniques for those of you who do not use airbrushes.
We hope you enjoy this and that it inspires you to try your hand at the tips.

Follow the complete painting and weathering process from A to B in this 30-minute film. The main part of the video deals with getting the most from the excellent but somewhat fiddly Lifecolor acrylic paint ranges. Airbrushing them can be helped with the aid of a secret weapon.
Watch all of the paint stages. We also used Lifecolor Tensocroms, oils and enamels and we used Tamiya Clear paints as well as some Vallejo acrylic products.

Here's an unboxing from http://www.scalewarmachines.com - the home of model making videos, articles & archive films.
This time we look at the RPToolz Magnetic Handles and their Figure Handle (with collet and chuck) sets for holding your work pieces for painting, finishing or detailing - all available from http://www.historexagents.com/yt.
RPToolz Product page: http://www.historexagents.com/historexlink.php?SupplierCode=RP
These well-made tools are very nicely engineered with annodised CNC made contoured aluminium handles. There is a perspex base plate which makes it all extremely sturdy. Magnets secure your work piece on the magnetic handles. The chuck, meanwhile, will hold all sorts of figures or busts.
The RPMag-50 is intended for 1/72nd or 1/48th subjects whilst the RPMag-60 is for 1/35th, 1/32nd or 1/24th models. The boxes come with either 8mm or 10mm magnets on the handle and 10 steel discs which go inside the model. There are more steel discs sold separately and you will need 2 per model.
What to know more & find out how to use it? Then have a look at our video review.

After our last video update on face painting for figures or busts, featuring a 1/10th scale Young Miniatures resin bust of a Knight Templar in Jerusalem (YH1827), we asked if you wanted to see more. Many of you were kind enough to ask to see the painting of the whole bust and we are happy to oblige.
The part one (the face and beard) of this bust but is visible here:
youtu.be/rVki9UElsu8
In this “How To” video come review, we experiment with painting a medieval Knight Templar (who looks a lot like Sean Connery). To do this, we needed to paint white and black. So rather than a proper “How To” step-by-step guide, this is more of a review of Vallejo’s White and Black set that we unboxed some years back for Vallejo.

These references are digitally printed on high quality 300gsm paper for covers and 150gsm for the smooth and satin pages. All come with a high-strength binding.
These are top-quality works by expert modellers & are illustrated with excellent photography & high-grade step-by-step instructional articles. If you want to improve your figure painting & diorama builds, then look no further than these. There’s four special edition volumes available initially, WW2 German, Knights and Crusades, Ancient Warfare and World War One.
A really impressive feature is not only the visual layout but also the concept. Each book has a series of articles, each looking at a particular area, challenge, problem or field of the figure painting & diorama discipline.
Thanks to http://www.historexagents.com for the review samples.
Hope you enjoy this review and yes we wear gloves to look at books (weird huh?).

This part is all about weathering and how to achieve it. It is highly personal and subjective, of course, but our goal was to match the archive footage of the real tank in 1940.
Weathering is iterative and multi-layered as you will see. To speed things up, try alternating between enamels and acrylics and using a hairdryer. What you see is pretty much real time as this method allows you to press on and keep working without worrying that you will undo previous work.
Follow the complete painting and weathering process from A to B in this film. Watch the build and all of the paint/weathering/finishing stages. We used Mig Productions, Tamiya, AK, Vallejo, Lifecolor and Humbrol products to name a few. As you can see we are pretty disloyal and agnostic and use whichever paint brand or product is to hand or that we particularly like for a certain task.
No sealing occurred between effects unless shown. So you do not need to seal with varnish if you don't care to.
You can find more information on some of the techniques seen by clicking the i link for longer single videos.

The kit is great and went together well. Added details came from the Panzerart aftermarket upgrade set (we think!) and scratch building.
Follow the complete painting and weathering process from A to Z in this two-part film. This part is the painting, decaling and sealing. Part two will look at detailed weathering.
Watch the build and all of the paint stages.
We used Tamiya and some Lifecolor and Vallejo acrylic products.

Perhaps the most impressive products were the bright orange lexan cutting mats which come in four designs labelled Type A to D. All of them allow you to cut masking tape with extreme precision in a whole host of sizes and shapes. This will allow you to cut masks, straps, intricate designs and much more. It really is an innovative idea with 101 uses. However, because this tool is so precise, don’t think of these as ordinary cutting mats or you will ruin them. They all have laser cut grooves or indentations that allow the cutting blade to be guided to the shape of the cutting mat designs - and there are loads of them across the four types. Very useful indeed and a pleasure to use and review.
The second part of the film looks at the more overlooked everyday essentials available from Infini Model - sanding accessories. They make a range of high-quality wet and dry sanding products from precision soft sticks to thicker softback pads and flatter pads or sheets. All have the abrasive bonded via high voltage induction for a longer life. The abrasive papers used are manufactured by Matador of Germany. These were well designed and a joy to use. The multipacks we tested are a great way to take a finish from rough to mirror-like shine using all the grades. However, you can also buy these in smaller packs. We will certainly use these in future videos and you will see them put to good use as a long-term test.

Called Build and Paint, these longer films show most principle steps in one single longer video. We have settled on a running commentary as this seems popular. There are still the text slates up to see, so if you don’t like the commentary or music, you can switch it off.
The kit, is simple and uncomplicated, being of the “short-run” type. Nevertheless, you can find this exact same kit reboxed by Dragon too. We added after-market resin wheels from Hussar Productions and a brass barrel from Schatton Modellbau. That rectified most of the kit’s weaknesses.
Watch the build and all of the paint stages. We used AK Interactive, Lifecolor, Wilder, Tamiya and other products.
Sit back, grab a drink and watch pretty much everything we did to get the final finish.
You will see the following products in the film:
Tamiya extra thin liquid cement glue.
We also used Deluxe Materials modelling products extensively.
You can find more information on some of the products and techniques seen using these links:

Deluxe Materials superglues and adhesives - youtu.be/BZkrFzURPvM , youtu.be/UaVhqIpxWvs
As these videos take longer, the frequency of our videos has reduced a bit lately. We would rather focus on making instructional videos that are popular rather than sticking rigidly to a release schedule set in stone. We have had a run of these Build and Paint films lately and we have more in the bank, but we will release some shorter videos soon over the summer.
Any questions, let us know in the comments. Bye for now!

The kit, is great and went together well. The plastic tracks are a right pain however. We customised it a bit and added our own touches like some aftermarket smoke canisters and WW2 German antennas from Riich Model.
Watch the build and all of the paint stages. We used Lifecolor acrylic products in the main, with some weathering painting done with Wilder enamel washes.
As it's a national holiday here in the UK, why not sit back, grab a drink and watch pretty much everything we did to get the final finish.

We often scan Ebay looking to expand our collection of used Minicraft modelling tools. These precision-made 12v tools use a series of 9-18v transformers and have a variety of uses including:
Drills of various sizes
Sanders
Saws
Lathe or router kits
Accessories of all types
The only catch is that they are no longer made so you'll have to find them via a second-hand source.
We bought our first drill kit new many years ago then got our first Ebay haul 3-4 years after.
Then we recently found a bunch of used tools for sale and we pounced. We got a giant box of bits and bobs. Want to know what's inside? Watch the film for a review and reveal of these indispensable hobby tools.

If you want to see how we painted British Western Desert “Caunter” geometric WW2 camouflage then watch this. Using a variety of paints and effects from enamels to acrylics and oils, the paint was weathered. We combined acrylics with enamels so this model was weathered over one evening without allowing everything to dry between effects. Alternating this way can speed things up. You’ll see products from Lifecolor, Wilder, Mig, Ammo, Humbrol, Abteilung 502 etc.etc.
Sit back, grab a drink and watch pretty much everything we did to get the final finish.

We compare the Hi-Line HP-TH and Revolution HP-TR2 so see which one is better for model making and what each trigger airbrush offers to buyers. The HP-TH has some features the TR2 does not, like the fan pattern and 0.5mm nozzle with shallow taper needle, a MAC valve and a paint volume control for setting the trigger travel and therefore paint flow.
The specs state that to get the fan pattern you will need at least 1.2CFM of airflow, we test this with our existing compressor but also with an upgraded heavy duty and very loud SGS compressor we purchased to run this in the fan mode and other spray guns (and air tools) we play to run in our shop in future.
It is unboxed, reviewed & road-tested in both spray modes with both compressors.
This unit was kindly supplied by http://www.airbrushes.com.
Technical data is in the film and in links below.
To find out more including pricing look here:
Hi-Line HP-TH (price at time of publication £250-£279 GBP) - airbrushes.com/product_info.php?products_id=2316
Revolution HP-TR2 (price at time of publication £265 GBP) - £airbrushes.com/product_info.php?products_id=1851

Scale War Machines isn't elitist or high and mighty. We don't keep our techniques hidden away like some sort of keeper of the modelling scrolls. We try things out and then tell you all about how you can do it yourself.
We aim to always encourage others in the hobby and hopefully inspire them to improve their skills.
There are different sorts of playlists and films with more in the pipeline. So there's hopefully something for everyone.
Please help this channel grow by doing as it says in the channel trailer.
Happy Modelling!

This has given sterling service since we bought it 12 years ago and rather shamefully we never pampered it and never did any substantial maintenance in over a decade! Don’t be like us! If you have one of these, or a similar unit, do these simple maintenance steps every so often to keep your machine in tip-top condition (or don’t bother and as you’ll see it will still be fine!).
We decided to pass it to a friend and we thought it wise to do a service first. We were curious about what was lurking inside. Watch this film to find out.
Happy spraying and thanks to everyone who followed us in 2018 and we’ll be back with more content in 2019. Have a great New Year!
Price paid in 2006 was £187.99GBP.
Thanks to Paul “Herbie” Herbert for the helping hand.
Here's a bit more info:
The working pressure runs from 0 psi to 88 psi or 0 - 6 bar
1l tank
Safety/bleed valve (constant motor)
1/4” BSP fittings
The air flow is 17 lpm or 0.53 cfm at open flow
Moisture trap and air regulator
