(rev 09/2023)SwRI-developed antenna array wins 2023 R&D 100 AwardSouthwest Research Institute2023-08-28 | R&D World Magazine has recognized Southwest Research Institute’s Wideband Conformal Continuous-Slot Antenna Array as one of the 100 most significant innovations for 2023. The Wideband Conformal Continuous-Slot Antenna Array technology provides naval ships with high-performance, high-frequency radio frequency direction-finding (DF) and signal acquisition while conforming around shipboard-supporting mast structures. Modern-day DF systems determine the direction of enemy combatants and provide situational awareness and serve to locate emergency transponders for search-and-rescue operations. The Wideband Conformal Continuous-Slot Antenna Array, released as part of SwRI’s AS-750 family of advanced antenna arrays, overcomes the performance issues commonly encountered at higher frequencies. The array was designed using electromagnetic modeling software and takes inspiration from an unorthodox concept for a wideband antenna array originally conceived by electronics engineer Harold Wheeler in 1948, which until now was largely theoretical.

ENABLE combines novel artificial intelligence algorithms with OpenSim biomechanical modeling to analyze the properties of human physical motion, or kinematics, from standard video. Historically, sports scientists have relied on the tedious process of attaching physical markers to a human subject at precise locations on the body to capture kinematics data with special infrared cameras. The Southwest Research Institute-developed ENABLE circumvents physical markers by leveraging novel computer vision algorithms that process standard video. An SwRI-developed neural network identifies and tracks over 80 virtual points on the human body including the locations of wrists, elbows, knees, ankles and other joint positions.

(rev 4/2023)A more efficient hydrogen compressor for FCEV refuelingSouthwest Research Institute2023-03-27 | A new hydrogen compressor developed at Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) can improve the efficiency and reliability of hydrogen compression used in the refueling of fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs). The SwRI-developed linear motor-driven reciprocating compressor (LMRC) is designed to compress hydrogen as a fuel source for FCEVs and other hydrogen-powered vehicles. Unlike most hydrogen compressors, SwRI’s LMRC is hermetically sealed and has a linear motor design that increases its efficiency and reliability.

(08/2022)Automated Self-Driving Shuttle on SwRI CampusSouthwest Research Institute2022-08-08 | Southwest Research Institute has developed and deployed an automated shuttle to be used for tours of its 1,500-acree campus in San Antonio. The 14-passenger low-speed vehicle (LSV) features artificial intelligence to classify vulnerable road users, vehicles, roadway signs and other objects. While the autonomous shuttle navigates pre-programmed campus routes autonomously, a human driver is always behind the steering wheel for added safety. The self-driving shuttle can also be used to support applied research of software, sensors and systems in connected and automated vehicles.

The solution leverages open-source ROS 2 and the ROS-Industrial-based Scan-N-PlanTM trajectory planning tool in addition to SwRI-developed algorithms and utilities to automate industrial processes such as grinding, painting, polishing, cleaning, welding, and sealing. This three-step process utilizes 3D visual mesh data, intelligent classification, and machine learning algorithms to scan parts, plan work and execute various processes.
