Koh Yao Noi - 10th Anniversary 4K Remaster Philip Bloom 2024-06-07 | This is a 4K remastered version of my short film "Koh Yao Noi," which I originally published 10 years ago. This version has been upscaled from 2.7K using Topaz Video AI. I also used it to fix many of the stabilisation/ rolling shutter issues caused by the drone. I tweaked a couple of the edits and toned down the grade from the original using Film Convert Nitrate. I just wanted to mark the 10th anniversary by making it look better, which I feel I have achieved. This is one of the films I am most proud of making. With the drones we have now, I wouldn't have needed to go through all the work of making it look better, nor would I have had all the technical problems. Drones have come a long way in 10 years! Here's some more information about the gear and the filming:Koh Yao Noi is a small island in Thailand. I filmed this whilst on my holiday there. Initially, I was just going to use drone shots alongside my GH4 shots, but the footage was so special that I made this standalone edit. I used two DJI Phantom 2s with a GoPro Hero 3+ shooting in 2.7K, which was attached to the drone with the Zen Muse 3-axis gimbal. The video quality wasn't great, as many of the shots had many issues with rolling shutter ripples. Monitoring the shots was also very hard. One Phantom 2 had an awful FPV monitor, which I could barely see anything on, and the other had nothing, so I was flying purely by line of sight, which is tricky for composition!I had to do a lot of work in post to fix the issues and make it as good as possible. The film got a fantastic reception and, to date, has had 759,000 views on Vimeo. It has a lot less on YouTube on this channel, but GoPro also uploaded it to their channel, with 1.2 million views. One day, I hope one of my videos on this channel will break 1 million views!The film also helped me land "The Wonder List" TV series for CNN, which I filmed all over the world for the first two seasons; then, during the filming of season 3, I badly injured my back, which meant I couldn't continue anymore.In March 2015, I entered the film into the 1st New York City Drone Film Festival, and it won the "Best Travel/Landscape" category. Now I See Sony a7S - 4K Topaz AI upscale Philip Bloom 2022-11-07 | When this was filmed in 2014, it was not possible to record 4K with the Sony A7S as the Atomos Shogun wasn't out, and the camera cannot record 4K internally. This was a shame as this video was a big reason why the camera sold so many; it demonstrated the low light power of the camera unlike anything else. The original is also my most-watched video on YouTube. I've been using the incredibly impressive Topaz Video Enhance AI for around 2 years, and I use it A LOT! I have messed around with upscaling some of my old videos, but I don't want to replace them as the original versions are a moment in time; that doesn't stop me from re-uploading it, though! This was processed with V3 of Topaz Video Enhance AI, which is even more powerful; I set it to 4K, selected the enhance tab and left the Proteus auto setting to do its work. What makes this so much better than before was you had to set your parameters for the whole video, but each shot is different. When in auto, it is constantly analysing each frame and applying what it thinks the frame needs. Insta360 X3 on Sony a7R V! Philip Bloom 2022-11-07 | Insta360 X3 mounted to the Sony A7R V via a small rig nato rail monitor arm and cage. This was filmed whilst I was in Norway for Sony on Saturday to give a talk at Stavanger foto.When you turn stabilisation off in the studio app you get this wonderful look where the camera is locked to the centre of the frame. I did this with the Fujifilm X-H2s in a post in September and in my X3 review, people asked what the set up looked like, well here you go! 🙂
The return of DJIs TRIPOD MODE...but better!! Philip Bloom 2022-11-02 | After getting nowhere with my begging DJI to bring back Tripod Mode to their drones, which they replaced with the 5x faster cine mode, I started a petition to show them how much their customers needed it. In May, DJI told me that they had accepted the petition; but it was a long slow wait with no information until they sent me the new Mavic 3 Classic, a cheaper version of Three. The only difference I can see from the standard Three is it doesn't have the top camera. The exciting thing is this is the first drone to feature the new Cine mode, which has an adjustable speed top speed. This is what I asked them to do in the petition. It's wonderful to have it again; super fine control is much easier. This was added to the other Three models today as well as a load of other new things. I don't know about other drones yet, don't worry; I am on the case!A full video about it, the Classic and the new firmware for the Mini 3 Pro is coming soon!

Richmond Green/ Hill - Fujifilm X-H2S 6K 3:2 Test Shots Philip Bloom 2022-09-11 | Filmed for the Fujikina event in New York, which I was speaking at but will also be used in my future review, which will have natural sound added.This was mostly shot 6K 3:2 open gate at 30fps converted to 25p and with the 150-600mm F5.6-8 with a couple of shots using the 10-24mm F4 at 10mm. A couple of shots, especially the 100fps 4K bowling shot, are a bit soft due to having a variable ND at 600mm, which is not a good idea; you need fixed strength NDs for such an extreme focal length.Filmed on Richmond Green and Richmond Hill in London.
The Random Typewriter: Shot with Insta360 X3 Philip Bloom 2022-09-08 | Just over 2 months ago Insta360 released their 1” 360 camera, which I have a super in-depth but fun review of on my channel. They’ve just released ANOTHER model, the X3, which is the successor to the ONE X2; I am so glad they have dropped the One from names as it’s so messy!Anyway, I’ve had it for about 2 weeks, and it’s very good! I am making a sponsored video using it to be released in a couple of weeks or so. It’s not a review but a video about how I use 360 cameras and get the best results for them. It will be my first sponsored video for them despite many offers, I’ve always had issues with aspects of the cameras, so I’ve always had to turn them down. So why this one? The image isn’t as good as the 1” as you’d expect as the sensors are 1/4 the size; they are 1/2” sensors which are slightly bigger than the previous model. They are new sensors, though, and because of this, they can produce a much better image. Very important to me there is sharpness control too. This is a strange little edit that I shot last night in my hotel room in Sweden; there was a random broken typewriter in it and it inspired me to make this. The goal was to shoot something that could well have been shot with a traditional camera but has flourishes which are only possible with a 360 camera. All the audio (not the music, of course) other than the footsteps are with the internal mic, which is a HUGE improvement over the terrible mics we’ve had in all their previous cameras. It’s also 48Khz for the first time, thankfully! It’s a lovely little 360 camera, with a gorgeous large display giving super easy control and packed full of features.

Philip Bloom 2022-05-19 | FEB 2023 - LATEST FIRWARE: youtube.com/watch?v=ZJNo1LMZseQAfter 3 and a half weeks of making a really well-crafted review the day after it goes live DJI release new firmware which makes something that I say no longer accurate. This was after spending 2 hours talking in-depth with them about what is going on with the camera and what it was capable of! As YouTube won't let you replace videos and I wasn't going to lose all those lovely comments by re-uploading it, the only way to make sure people who watch my reviews have completely accurate info was by making this quick follow up.When looking at the bitrate in the graphic showing 10 bit I blurred it after uploading as it was for a black image after updating so what it was showing wasn't correct. The bitrate is the same as 8 bit which is around 90mbps in 4K 24p etc H265. Also, it should say 16.7 million colours for 8 bit, not 1.67. Typo!
