McCormack was at the height of his vocal powers, and the accompanying singers excel in their supporting roles. Peter Dwan Sings JMCTV 2010-05-27 | My love of John McCormack was passed on to me by my father. So it was with some delight that I heard this recording by him recently. He always prided himself in being able to sing, but we agreed to disagree :-) However, I now have to eat my words. This recording was made over thirty years ago, and though not of the highest quality it shows he had talent. He always told us that Dame Vera Rozsa offered to teach him for free, and now I see why. The song is Per La Gloria D'adorarvi. The photo is of more recent vintage.

John McCormack Photo Montage JMCTV 2007-01-14 | This film sequence featured at the John McCormack Gala Tribute Concert, which took place at the National Concert Hall, Dublin. The montage is accompanied by Mascagni's Intermezzo from Cavalleria Rusticana, which was performed by the Irish Film Orchestra. In 1907, at the age of 23 John McCormack's made his operatic debut in Cavalleria Rusticana at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. For the next eight years he would be the lead tenor at the great opera house.

This particular clip featured in a Gala Tribute Concert to the tenor at The National Concert Hall, Dublin in September 2006. The event marked the unveiling of plans for a new statue to the singer and a new bursary which will run for the next ten years with total prize money in excess of 100,000 euro.

It is a lavish production centred around a DVD documentary of his life, but the box also contains four CDs with wonderful singing from the man himself and his great contemporaries. To round off the collection the box also contains a booklet of his letters to a friend, which brings McCormack's personality to life and gives his opinions of the great singers of his day during a time that is now regarded as the golden age of operatic singing. The DVD brings together what filmic evidence exists of his career, while the CDs contain some of his most magical singing in opera up to the 1920s and afterwards - during his concert career when he was a superstar, particularly in the US.
