(8 of ?) how to pick a lock, making challenge locks
updated
This is the first in a series of videos covering these two security pins. We have discussed and covered standard, serrated, spool, T-pin, and mushroom pins, it only makes sense that we step up to these diabolical pins next.

At first glance of the lock’s pins, I was unsure as to why it is ranked as a Blue Belt, since it only has standard and spool drivers, but after picking it I can see an argument for why it is Blue. The Keyway is somewhat tight, not so much for pick movement but for TOK tensioning. I needed to use a .025” tension tool to pick it. Either way, hopefully this is entertaining or helpful.

Mushroom pins are a type of security driver that functions as a hybrid between a spool and a tapered (video to come) pin. These particular pins are not super common, the Abus 85 is the only lock I have that has them. They have the potential to cause issues for newer or beginner pickers that aren’t familiar with the feedback or behavior of tapered pins and or spool pins. My hope is to have you fully prepared to deal with these pins when and if you encounter them.

The Master 410 Loto lock is a green belt lock in the LPU belt ranking system. It contains a dead core, dead shackle, spool drivers and serrated drivers. The lock is also key retaining, which is common and required (I think) for Loto locks to be OSHA compliant. This lock is also your ticket to joining the rattle club!

Most locks that you will pick up from a store or local shop are going to contain standard key pins and drivers. These are great locks for beginners to learn the basics of lock picking with, but will be quickly outgrown. I wasn’t expecting much from this lock, I figured it would be nothing but standard pins, but I was pleasantly subverted when it came to the gut. While the driver pins were all standard, the key pins were tapered!
Tapered pins can pose trouble to pickers, more so tapered drivers than key pins, and knowing how they function in the lock is “key” to defeating them. The key pins being tapered means that they are more likely to become over set and prevent the core plug from turning. As long as you pay attention to the feed back of the lock though, they shouldn’t pose any issues for you.
This lock also serves as an example to a problem that I forget about often and have to remind myself about. Depending on how you have the lock in your vise, the type of vise you use and the format of the lock, the tailpiece may be prevented from fully rotating due to hitting the jaws of your vise. Be mindful of this when picking as it may lead you to think the lock has not been picked open when it has.

Let’s take a look at what binding order is, along with why key bitting is irrelevant, and why these things shouldn’t matter when it comes to learning how to pick locks. We will discuss what makes them non-factors in our picking, what benefits they could offer as we develop our skills and abilities, as well as when they might be useful or a hinderance. Hopefully, this will shed some light on these topics and help clear up any confusion you may have regarding where your focus should be as you learn.

I have made a ton of challenge locks recently. Most of my time in the lock lab for the last week or two has been dedicated to CL construction. Some have been single locks, some have been sets, some are still in the planning and concept phase. I have completed over 10 new locks that are being sent out. They have mostly been pin tumbler locks, only one was a lever lock. I have been experimenting with new ideas and processes. The picking will resume soon, I promise. That being said, I am setting a goal to get into the triple digits of CLs made before the end of the year.

I have made a video before going over challenge locks and my thoughts on making them, but I feel as though that video is due for an update. Since making that video I have changed my approach a little, improved my pin making and core mods, as well as just gotten faster at producing CLs. So, here we are with a new build along with commentary video for challenge locks. Hopefully it provides some new info or proves useful to you. I bought this KiK padlock a while ago and can not for the life of me remember what lock I put in it. I know it is a Schlage lock, most likely a Marks SC4, but idk. I figured we could get it unlocked so we can gut it and see what’s inside.
On a side note, it turned out to be more difficult than expected. The difficulty came from the actuator and not the lock however. It took some serious force to get it to turn and release the shackle. Whatever though, we got it open.

This is “Downward Spiral”, a challenge lock made by StormCrow. The engraving and work work put into this lock is stunning. Everything from the body to the pins were beautifully crafted. Even the key was given the artistic treatment. This was a really fun lock to be able to have in the vise. This is also the first CL from StormCrow that I have had the opportunity to pick. I have a few more from him, so be on the look out for those videos to come.

This is “Downward Spiral”, a challenge lock made by StormCrow. The engraving and work work put into this lock is stunning. Everything from the body to the pins were beautifully crafted. Like other IC (interchangeable core) locks, this one has two different shear lines. One is for operating the lock and the other is for removing the core from housing (called the control shear line). Unlike other IC locks though, this one only has pin stacks 3 and 4 that are “mastered” to allow for the two shear lines. This makes it somewhat easier to pick both shear lines since there are fewer pin stacks to worry about.
Sargent locks are known for their good tolerances and that is on display with this lock. However, those tolerances work in our favor with this lock. Because of the way the way the retaining cam works, you can focus on picking each shear line one at a time depending on tension direction.

In this video we take a look at a Weiser 5 pin mortise cylinder. Weiser is an American lock company founded in 1990 and headquartered in Arvada, Colorado. The keyway on this lock is very spacious, making it a great lock for beginners to start with as they learn to manipulate pins with their lockpicks and other locksmith tools. The bitting for this particular lock is nice / fun due to the high and low cuts being adjacent to each other.

Did you know that The American Lock company made mortise cylinders? I didn’t. They are most known for their padlocks, such as the A1100, 700, 5200 and others. While the padlocks that they produce offer good lock security with the inclusion of security key pins and security drivers, making them a favorite for locksport as a training tool, this mortise is pinned with standard pins.
This lock is not very difficult to pick, making it a great lock for beginners to start with or practice with. It also has the added benefit of not needing to be shimmed when disassembled, further increasing the beginner friendly nature of the lock.

This is a 50mm laminated steel body padlock that I was able to pick up from Mercari. It was part of the same bundle that the Chateau lock from the last video was in. The listing stated that it was from the self storage company Public Storage, but that was really all it said. When the lock arrived I was happy to discover that it was an Abus 41 core.
The Abus 41 does contain security pins in the form of spool drivers. These spool pins, along with the Yale style keyway make it a nice lock for beginners to pick up and practice with if they are wanting something outside of the popular master 140 series or brinks locks. While the Abus 41 is currently unranked in the LPU belt system (which makes it a white belt by default) I would place it at a yellow belt rank personally.

This padlock was part of a bundle I recently bought. The bundle was 2 50mm padlocks, this one and another branded as a Public Storage lock. After picking them both, I am near certain that they contain the same core, an Abus 41.
The Abus 41 is a currently unranked lock in the LPU belt system, but I would place it as a yellow belt. The lock does contain spool pins and the Yale style keyway can pose a challenge to newer pickers. Overall it is a fun lock to pick and play with.
This lock does have some security flaws however. The lock is susceptible to shimming attacks, something that can be done with a soda can, so I wouldn’t want to use this in any higher security areas.
