Could digital avatars help treat psychosis? | Wellcome Wellcome 2023-05-31 | Hearing voices is one of the most common psychosis symptoms. These auditory hallucinations can be distressing and people who live with conditions like schizophrenia experience stigma. That’s why better mental health treatments and interventions are needed, and why lived experience of what works is vital.Nicola, who has schizophrenia, is part of the AVATAR therapy research team, studying an experimental digital intervention that could help people experiencing auditory hallucinations. Nicola, and others enrolled in the trial, work with a therapist to create a digital avatar resembling the voice and face they hear and see. In this video, Nicola shares her experience of schizophrenia and her hopes for this study and future research. Yuki Iiyama, Mindscapes Tokyo, Mori Art Museum | Wellcome Wellcome 2022-07-08 | Find out more about Mindscapes: wellcome.org/what-we-do/our-work/mindscapes During her Mindscapes Tokyo residency at Mori Art Museum, Yuki worked with affected communities to explore the social and emotional impact of domestic violence in Japan. Based between Tokyo and Kanagawa, Yuki Iiyama is a visual artist who works primarily with video and other forms of archival, audio-visual materials. Utilising interviews and personal testimony, she examines power dynamics between individuals, society and history as well as processes such as stigmatization. Thrown into relief by the effect of Covid-19 and lockdowns, Yuki’s work interrogates domestic violence in Japan as a lesser examined social pandemic. Working with interviews of survivors and perpetrators, Yuki interrogates the transitional period of public attitudes in Japan on domestic violence and its impact on mental health. Indu Antony, Mindscapes Bengaluru, MAP | Wellcome Wellcome 2022-07-08 | Find out more about Mindscapes: wellcome.org/what-we-do/our-work/mindscapes During her Mindscapes Bengaluru residency at MAP, Indu worked with a network of community centres and opened a new space called Namma Katte - a space for leisure, a space for women to exchange stories of care and mental health. These stories will inform a collective artwork. Indu Antony is an artist who previously trained in medicine, often working with communities to express the inequalities of gender, class and caste. Using a specific stitching pattern from Northern Karnataka called the ‘Kaudi’, Indu is using textiles as a medium for participants to bond and share experiences over. This is coupled by a ‘Neeli Box’ where anonymously written stories can be shared, alongside collecting significant personal objects to be displayed in an exhibition. Kader Attia, Mindscapes Berlin, Gropius Bau | Wellcome Wellcome 2022-07-08 | Find out more about Mindscapes: wellcome.org/what-we-do/our-work/mindscapes During his Mindscapes Berlin residency at Gropius Bau, Kader continued his research into repair, exploring the immaterial wounds that haunt German society.Kader is a French-Algerian artist and theorist whose previous sculptural, visual and theoretical works are inspired by the question of the visibility and invisibility of the wound.Kader is producing a multimedia artwork informed by diverse bodies of knowledge, including psychoanalysis and traditional healing, to consider the scarring and repair of Berlin’s cityscape carried through collective memory and intergenerational trauma. This work will be exhibited as part of an exhibition at Gropius Bau that he is co-curating. Guadalupe Maravilla, Mindscapes New York, Brooklyn Museum | Wellcome Wellcome 2022-07-08 | Find out more about Mindscapes: wellcome.org/what-we-do/our-work/mindscapes During his Mindscapes New York residency at Brooklyn Museum, Guadalupe continued his exploration of healing from displacement and generational trauma, and the intimate links between bodily and mental health. Guadalupe draws from his personal experience as a cancer survivor and from his displacement - due to the 1984 civil war in El Salvador - to the United States to shape his multidisciplinary practice of sculpture, performance, video, and ritual. For Mindscapes, Guadalupe’s exhibition ‘Guadalupe Maravilla: Tierra Blanca Joven’ at the Brooklyn Museum addresses these themes of displacement and healing across generations through his large scale sculptures, items from the museum's Mayan collection, and video of a workshop with undocumented teens in detention, as well as a Healing Room designed by teens involved in the Museum's work-study program. An Ants Guide to Being Prepared | Pandemic Preparedness | Wellcome Wellcome 2021-12-16 | The world could have been much better prepared for Covid-19. So now we must ask: How well prepared are we going to be for the next pandemic? The risk of another pandemic is high. Our 21st century way of life increases this risk. Climate change, intensive farming and international travel, enable diseases to spread across the world faster than ever before. As the Omicron variant spreads across the world at rapid speed, we are reminded yet again of the need for global networks that work together to identify and stop infectious diseases. The task facing world leaders now, even as they continue to deal with Covid-19, is to work together to ensure we are better prepared for the next outbreak. There are two paths world leaders can take. It’s a little like Aesop’s fable, The Ant and the Grasshopper – a story about the virtues of planning for the future. Like the ants in the fable, we could learn from Covid-19, stock-up, prepare and keep watch as a global community. Or policymakers could breathe a sigh of relief, hope nothing like this happens again, and carry on much as before. Governments cannot make the same mistakes again. They must do better. And they must work together to strengthen global health systems to better prevent, prepare for and respond to the next pandemic. Sometimes new variants will emerge and disappear. But every once in a while, a virus strikes lucky by mutating in a way that helps it survive and reproduce. How community engagement in Nigeria is reducing misuse of antibiotics | Wellcome Wellcome 2020-11-18 | In Nigeria, labourers and farmers in local rural communities have been mistakenly using antibiotics as painkillers.
