This cut of Steamed Vegetables NEVER AIRED. In the last quarter of the cartoon you're going to see a version of the climax and ending that no one outside of the original team has ever seen.
An early episode (I think this was Mike Fontanelli's first storyboard on the show) where we were still sorting out just what the limits were for the studio. In this case we CROSSED THE LINE for violence. In the end, the studio insisted that we rewrite and re animate a number of shots in the ending to remove the tomato juice "blood" and other imagry.
Trivia: This is the first (and maybe the only) Ned cartoon where we learn the name of Ned's Teacher, Ms. Bundt.
Fun fact: The potato getting peeled in the climax screaming, "My eyes, my eyes! Ahhhhhh! My eyes!" is voiced by show producer Donovan Cook.

A celebration of Neds favorite two bullies - Nightmare Ned - The Ballad of Conrad and Vernon

In the early days of writing and storyboarding the first few Ned cartoons, two bullies were born by the hand of mister Mike Mitchell (Ned's Life As A Dog) who suggested they carry the names, Conrad and Vernon.
Flash forward to later in the production and two Ned cartoons are shelved by the studio due to content they felt was not appropriate for television. So we found ourselves with an empty time slot ... the answer was the short Dentist cartoon and a 'clip show' dedicated to the many exploits and cameos of Conrad and Vernon.

Trivia: Conrad is voiced by John Frost who at the time of the shoe, (the 90's) was well known for his day job as the voice of famous Los Angeles alternative rock radio station, KROQ. John created most of the stations unique and hysterical I.D. tags and fake commercials. John was not doing much (if any) cartoon V.O. work. On the other hand, Vernon is voiced by Rob Paulsen, who in the 90's was already a legend for voicing Yakko (Animaniacs) and Pinky (Pinky and the Brain) among many other fantastic characters.

Fun fact: Conrad and Vernon's name sake is a very talented writer, producer, story artist and director, Conrad Vernon who was working on Ned at the time. (Conrad is well known for Directing feature animation films, Shrek 2, Sausage Party, The Adams Family, Shrek 5.)

Growing up & becoming a teen can be a real horror story - Nightmare Ned - My How Youve Grown Part 1

Ned’s desire to be taller sends him spiraling into the world of puberty and hormones and all the drama that comes with being a “teen”. This Ned cartoon definitely pushed the boundaries of what the studio was comfortable with.

Important note - Like all the Ned cartoons, it’s helpful to remember that this was written and produced in 1996-97. At the time, we were trying to push boundaries and be funny but we did not intend to be insensitive, sexist or racist. The depiction of the teen girls at the party, the “Testosterone” character and the girl who Ned goes on his date with are inappropriate and may be offensive to audiences today. This story would definitely be designed and told differently were we to produce it today.

Trivia: This cartoon was intended to be a full 22 minutes, part 1 and part 2, but the studio saw the storyboard for the second half and insisted that we not produce it. in part 2, Ned grows older again to become middle-aged where he has to deal with marriage and evil, flying monkey-like IRS agents. Ned then grows older again to become an old man where he is finally happy until … the Grim Reaper comes for him. This is where he wakes up and is thrilled to be young and small again (the ending you see in the current part 1.)
The unproduced Part 2 was co-written and storyboarded by Conrad Vernon (who is of course the namesake of Ned’s two bullies.)

Fun fact: Teen Ned is voiced by Jason Marsden who is well known as the voice of Max in the original Goofy Movie. Ned’s Testosterone is voiced by Brian Doyle Murray.

Trivia: This is the second appearance of the character of, Joanie, who is named for one of the Ned Directors, Joan Drake. To this day, no one can explain how we got the studio to allow us to have a zombie stripper in the show.

Fun fact: This cartoon was Paul Tibbitt's masterpiece. Not only did Paul lend his unique talents to the writing and the storyboards, Paul did a cameo as the voice of the Zombie Baseball Batter near the end of the cartoon.

In another classic moment of 90's bullying by Conrad and Vernon, Ned is tricked into using the Girls Bathroom at school and then humiliated by the other kids for it.

To be clear, we created this story in the heteronormative mid 90's to be funny by forcing Ned to see what it was like to live as a girl. We were shinning a light on the gender norms OF THAT TIME for the purposes of being entertaining. Of course the social context of this cartoon feels very different now, 30 years later. Feel free to compare and contrast how this story would be told today verses in 1997 and discuss amongst yourselves.

We had no intention of making fun of transgender people or gender identity. Transgender rights are and have always been human rights.

Trivia: The girl who Ned runs into while unknowingly using the Girls Bathroom, Joanie, is named after the Joan Drake who Directed this and many other Nightmare Ned cartoons. Joanie is also a featured character in the Ned cartoon, Until Undeath Do Us Part.

Fun fact: While the studio was uncomfortable with some of the stories we told, like Dapper Dan (aka The Naked Episode) and My How You've Grown and Anger and Steamed Vegetables, and insisted on rewrites or outright banning some material, we don't recall them having any big issues or calling for any big rewrites on this episode. The most controversial issue about this episode AT THE TIME, from the studio's point of view, was what song Conrad and Vernon would be forced to sing. What would be funniest of all the 'public domain' songs.

The strangest dentist appointment a cartoon kid from the 90s ever had! - Nightmare Ned - The Dentist

Ned starts off feeling very confident about his visit to the dentist, but then ... of course he falls asleep and it's nightmare time! This Ned cartoon is quite unique in a few ways; written and storyboarded by Vince Waller (no co-writer on this one). This is also the shortest cartoon we made at just 5 min and 45 seconds. The Dentist was combined with the 'clip show', The Ballad of Conrad and Vernon, to fill the slot of a normal length Ned cartoon. (We had a couple Ned cartoons "canceled" by the studio and so we had to quickly get creative to come up with material to fill the time slots.) And finally, this was the only original episode that was written almost entirely in rhyme.

Trivia: The super-talented and funny, Jess Harnell voices the Dentist. Jess is of course famous for voicing Wakko Warner in the Animaniacs. (And voicing Secret Squirrel in, Super Secret Secret Squirrel, also Produced by Donovan Cook.) But if you aren't aware of Jess's work as the rock star lead singer for the band Rock Sugar then you're missing out.

Ned's love of "our gentle sister, the milk cow" is extreme and it gets him mistaken for a cow himself by a couple space aliens who are bent on humiliating Earth's population of the bovine creatures.

SPOILER ALERT - This is the only Ned cartoon where the story is revealed NOT to be a nightmare. Ned really was abducted by aliens. (Notice that there is no swirling nightmare effect as Ned is falling asleep - that's how you know it's not a dream.)

Trivia: Alien Number 1 was voiced by the hysterical actor, Dan Castellaneta who is of course a legend for voicing Homer Simpson. Dan and actor Kevin West, who voiced Alien Number 2, were asked to create performances inspired by Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock from Star Trek. They did a terrific job.

Fun fact: This is the fourth and final Ned cartoon co-writen and storyboarded by hysterical Mike Fontanelli, (also Steamed Vegetables, Show Me The Infidel and Headless Lester.) Mike and Producer Donovan Cook happened to both be discovering the classic Star Trek series while making Nightmare Ned and Abduction is their love letter to Gene Roddenberry, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.

House of Games is one of the most surreal and dreamlike of all the Ned cartoons. Inspired by some, not-so-sensitive insight about the house from Dad, Ned's imagination spins wildly out of control. This was another cartoon where we explored how Dad's lack of understanding of Ned and his anxieties actually cause Ned's nightmares. To crew, it was hysterical that Dad (especially as voiced by Brad Garrett) often amplified Ned's problems rather than solving them.

Trivia: Vince Waller who co-wrote and storyboarded this cartoon was one of the SpumCo/Ren and Stimpy alums who joined the Nightmare Ned crew. After Ned, Vince landed at Nick and spend many years working on and eventually leading the SpongeBob team.

Fun fact: Jim Cummings and Kath Soucie voice all the characters in the house that come alive.

Nightmare Ned - Willie Trout - 1997

Willie Trout is another gem of hysterical absurdity from the writer and story artist, Mike Bell (also Canadian Bacon and Tooth or Consequences). It's hard to tell which classic story is a greater influence on this cartoon, Moby Dick or Pinocchio. You decide.

Apologies for the joke, "Lake Pee Pee No-no"
The team making Nightmare Ned grew up in the 60's and 70's, so in the 90's we all still believed that it was acceptable to make up names that were obvious parodies of Native American words and names. This was insensitive and insulting.

Trivia: Ned's Little Sister has tribal-style tattoos that are inspired by the character of Queenqueg from Moby Dick. We were always amazed that the studio allowed us to do this. Maybe they never noticed it?

Fun fact: Tress MacNeille provided many voices for Nightmare Ned but, Cicero, Geppetto's cat may well be the funniest.
When Ned first lands in Willie Trout's stomach, he briefly floats on a life preserver labeled, "Titanic".

You may notice that this is another Ned cartoon that has some 'Ren & Stimpy' vibe and that's because this is another cowritten and storyboarded by Mike Fontanilli (Dapper Dan and Steamed Vegetables). Mike is a true classic cartoonist who had spend a good chunk of time at Spumco before joining the Ned team.

The team making Nightmare Ned grew up in the 60's and 70's, so in the 90's we all still believed that it was still acceptable to make up names that were obvious parodies of Native American words and names. This was insensitive and insulting.

Trivia: Headless Lester gave the Ned team another opportunity to use the epically funny and talented Brad Garrett beyond his character as Ned's Dad. Brad's evil laughter and blood curdling screams are next level. This was a very fun recording session with Brad.

Fun fact: SPOILER ALERT (watch the cartoon before reading this 'fun fact').
Headless Lester is one of only two Ned Cartoons that break the construct of the story being Ned's nightmare. In this case, you'll notice that the swirling transition into the nightmare doesn't happen on a shot of Ned ... Then at the end of the cartoon, it is the Camp Counselor who wakes up.

Ned's guilt over breaking his Cousin's baby doll toy brings on a nightmare of tiny proportions. The violence and offensive behavior builds and builds to a crescendo when Ned wakes up.

Trivia: During the epic climactic Dune Buggy car chase, after spinning like a top, the Buggy stops and Ned appears to be ready to vomit but ... then he leans over the side of the car and says, "Oh my gosh!" We never understood this note, but the studio insisted that Ned vomiting (just the heaving sounds) was absolutely unacceptable. We were pretty much forced to replace the heaving throwing up sounds with the line of dial.

Fun fact: Kath Soucie (who is also the voice of Ned's Baby Sister) voices BOTH the Cousins.

In this cartoon, Ned's Dad gets a chance to shine as his unbridled enthusiasm for the life of ants takes Ned on wild excursion into their tiny world.

Trivia: April Winchell is the voice of the Queen Ant.
The classic toy the "Ant Farm" is a trademarked product so the show renamed it the "Ant Ranch".

Fun fact: This Ned cartoon was originally storyboarded by Eddie Fitzgerald, a cartoonist best known as the inspiration for the character of Pinky from Pinky and the Brain. It was very early in the production of the show and Eddie didn't find the character of Ned very interesting or funny so he boarded a version of the cartoon where Ned's Dad was the main character. Eddies version of the cartoon was funny as hell but it didn't work for the series because the producers needed Ned to be more prominent. So Eddie's version was given to Rob Renzetti, who reworked it substantially into the final cartoon you see here. Eddie was not given screen credit for his story work but if you know Eddie's style of comedy, you can see his influence throughout the cartoon.

The team making the Nightmare Ned series had many sources of inspiration for stories. In this cartoon, the classic book and movie, Alice In Wonderland provided our springboard. Ned chases his teacher Ms. Bundt into a wild land where he is tormented by always rhyming, Muck The Answer Bird.

Trivia: The voice acting legend, Jim Cummings voices Muck the Answer Bird and the goofy Clock Tree. Jim did a number of voices in Ned Cartoons.

Fun fact: This Ned cartoon was co-written and storyboarded by Ted Mathot who landed at Pixar not long after working on Ned. Ted spend 20 years as a super-star in the Pixar Story department working on all the Pixar classics starting with Monsters Inc.

Once again, the talented and wildly funny artist, Mike Bell serves up one of the craziest Ned Cartoons that was made. Some of the small, almost unnoticed, gags are the funniest. For example, when Ned questions putting a sky tram indoors, the Tooth Fairy tells him, "It's called style, my boy." then proceeds to hock a huge loogie and spit off the tram, (presumably on someone down below.)

Trivia: Originally we tried to get Carol Kane to be the voice of the Tooth Fairy, probably because of her hysterical performance as the Ghost of Christmas Present in the movie Scrooged, but she said no. This led us to a comedian the crew loved, Judy Tenuta, who was absolutely amazing. Judy brought her own style of performing and writing to the part, adding a few perfect ad-libs. One that always stands out is, "It's Easter Bunny and Sasquatch. Gross." The 'gross' was Judy's ad-lib that had everyone in the record session cracking up.

Fun fact: The window washer guy (at aprox 03:51) who says, "Good seein' ya, Tooth Fairy." is the voice of Mike Bell who co-wrote and storyboarded the cartoon.

Nightmare Ned - Magic Bus - 1997

Magic Bus was one of the high points in the series. All the elements came together to make a special Ned cartoon. it also has one of the best dialogue lines of the entire series, "I finally meet the girl of my dreams and we're headed for the Sun on a bus piloted by a puppet."

Trivia: The Puppet was originally voiced by the actor, Lawrence Tierney, (Reservoir Dogs, Seinfeld) but during the recording session he was not able to handle the physical intensity of the performance. In the end, we recast to use Jim Cummings. We played Mr. Tierney's session for Jim and he did a fantastic job of matching Lawrence Tierney's voice but with the intensity needed.

Fun fact: The actress who voiced the girl of Ned's dreams was voiced by Lacey Chabert who would latter play one of the "Plastics" in the classic comedy, Mean Girls. Mr. Nicholes, the bus driver is voiced by another SCTV alumni legend, Eugene Levy. That makes a total of three SCTV legends who lent hysterical performances to the series.
