Stained Glass Stories 2024-09-15 | "(Please) Lose Yourself in Me" by My Bloody Valentine is the closer to their 1987 EP Ecstasy. This was recorded during a transitionary time for the band. Original vocalist David Conway left the group to become an author, so Kevin Shields had to step up to lead vocals. Having little critical or commercial success with their early post-punk Birthday Party-inspired releases, one can hear the group moving towards a noisier jangly sound in Ecstasy. Despite the hectic and rushed sessions in which it was recorded, "(Please) Lose Yourself in Me" is probably a top 5 MBV song for me. The videos in this reel are some of my favorite footage of the group.

Stained Glass Stories 2024-06-30 | In 1990 there were only a handful of shoegaze bands in the US. Among them was the hugely underrated Medicine. They are an LA-based group who were active from 1990 to 1995, briefly reforming in 2003, and permanently reuniting in 2013. Medicine is also one of the most prolific shoegaze groups, releasing 10 studio albums as of 2024. They’ve undergone significant line-up changes over the years, with the most consistent member being founder Brad Laner. This is not a joke, but Shannon Lee was the vocalist for the group in 2003, daughter of Bruce Lee. Medicine are definitely on the noisier side of shoegaze, as opposed to the more dreamy ethereal end of the spectrum. There’s a Psychocandy level of feedback in some of these songs. I recommend starting with either “Shot Forth Self Living” or “The Buried Life.”

Stained Glass Stories 2024-06-29 | If you were to ask me what I think is Slowdive’s most underrated song, my answer would be “Silver Screen.”
This is a song that has never seen an official release, and was dismissed by Slowdive’s record label as shit.
“Silver Screen” is probably their most sonically intense song.
Hearing the guitars unfold into a roaring cascade of noise is such a surreal experience.
I think it represents the turbulent emotions attached to a relationship on the verge of crumbling.
It’s euphoric, anxious, introspective, and a bit sinister all at once.

Stained Glass Stories 2024-06-24 | This Swedish duo formed in 2001 and has since released five studio albums.
The Radio Dept. is a group that is able to create a buzzing and warm sound that I think helped bring dream pop into the 21st century.
I’m particularly nostalgic for music released in the early 2000s.
I would describe their themes as reflective and at times speak to some of the existential feelings we experience.
Just look at the lyrics on a track like “This Past Week,” which is about feeling like you’ve wasted time, and wanting to be a good friend.

Stained Glass Stories 2024-06-20 | Two years ago, I uploaded a video discussing the Japanese shoegaze scene.
One band that I didn’t get the chance to discuss is honeydip.
Active from 1995 to 2009, honeydip was a quartet that formed in Osaka, Japan. Perhaps their most known album is 1999’s Portable Audio Science, which includes the gorgeous shoegaze epic “Summer’s Gone.”
I think that honeydip kept their sound fresh, evolving with each release.
Their debut Planet of the Honey has a spacy noisier sound, while Summergazer explores electronic elements. I suspect that the reason honeydip wasn’t more popular is due to timing- they formed a few years after the first wave of shoegaze and disbanded right before the scene’s revival in the 2010s. I recommend starting with Portable Audio Science or Groovy Indian Summer.

Blending shoegaze with electronic elements, I would recommend this group for anyone who’s into trip hop and industrial rock. Despite the heavy, dense atmospheres one can hear in their music, Curve is just a duo. In a world that made sense, Toni Halliday would be considered one of the all-time great female shoegaze vocalists, along with Belinda Butcher, Miki Berenyi, and Rachel Goswell. Dean Garcia plays guitar, bass, and percussion on their records. Active from 1990 to 2005, Curve released six studio albums, most of which cannot be found on Spotify. I recommend starting with either Doppelgänger or Cuckoo.

Stained Glass Stories 2023-06-06 | As their name suggests, Tokyo Shoegazer emerged from the Shibuya region of Tokyo. Together from 2010 to 2013 and then reuniting in 2019, the group has quickly become of the most exciting modern shoegaze groups. Though all of their records have been positively received, including the one that was released just a few weeks ago, today I’m going to be talking about their debut album. Released in November 2011, Crystallize is one of the most fast-paced, brash records I’ve heard. It has the noisiness of Feed Me With Your Kiss, but also has some quieter moments, like the beautifully psychedelic, “Bright.” Yuki and Watanabe Kiyomi’s vocals blend well, especially in tracks like, “Just Alright.” It amazes me that one cat was able to create so many layers of sound.
