MIND & MACHINEThis week on the show we'll take an extraordinary look at the future of storytelling where the narrative follows us through the real world from device to device and location to location.
Our guest is Rob Auten, one of the most creative and innovative technological artists I’ve ever met. After working on major game franchises (Gears of War, Battlefield) for leading studios (Fox, Disney), Rob created Junko Junsui, an alternate reality game across social media that Kokatu magazine described as "The Fake 'Terrorist' Conspiracy Game That Fooled People For Years” — an astonishing “War of the Worlds” scare for the digital age.
From that experience, Rob and his new company Hexagram are now creating a vast platform that enables users to move through a building, neighborhood or city with story elements unfolding across personal devices and location-based installations. The story experience is informed by user behavior, adapting to the pacing and sequencing of their daily lives or their deliberate investigation of the narrative.
These spacial/temporal story revelations can be informed by AI-determined actions or an author's programmed results. In any case, Rob’s platform tracks and delivers a narrative experience across devices and physical environments like no story ever experienced before. It’s endlessly scalable across user base size, geography or story ambition.
We’ll hear from Rob about releasing a game that takes on a life of its own in the real world, and how he is providing the tools for other storytellers to create even more expansive and seamless experiences. ___

August Bradley on Twitter: twitter.com/augustbradley ____________________________Skill Mastery & Peak Performance via Deliberate Practice with Psychologist Anders EricssonMIND & MACHINE2020-02-05 | August Bradley's guest today is Anders Ericsson, author of the renowned book "Peak: Secrets from the New Science of Expertise". He is among the world's leading authorities on how to master new skills. Anders is a Professor of Psychology and conducted much of the research on expertise and peak performance that Malcolm Gladwell famously referenced to develop the 10,000 hour rule in Gladwell's book Outliers. However, as we discuss today, Malcom Gladwell mis-interpreted much of the science behind the 10,000 hour rule. Anders demonstrates that talent is overrated and peak achievement is dependent on a specific type of learning called "deliberate practice", and that your skill in any area is a function of the quantity and quality of “mental representations” you have for that activity. We explore the science of learning and of skill mastery -- how it happens, and how to do it.

Steven is the Executive Director of the Flow Research Collective, and a New York Times bestselling author. His books include The Rise of Superman, Tomorowland, and Stealing Fire. Along with Peter Diamandis, he co-authored the books Bold, Abundance, and most recently The Future is Faster than you Think.
