The tapes rolled. My LA neighbour Alan Gratzer beat the Hell out of his kit with the fattest, heaviest drumsticks I had ever seen. Phil Chen, a friend I had met when he played with Rod Stewart, brought his unusual style of funk-orientated rock playing to the party, along with his sunny Caribbean energy and humour. And Fred Mandel, one of the classiest keyboard players I have ever met, tickled both the ivories and some very technical synth patches to bring the spacey riffs to life. Ed (I can still never call him “Eddie Van Halen” because he more than once told me he found it annoying!) played the guitar as if it were a piano … tapping and snapping, and sliding and skipping around the fingerboard like an electric sprite - always with a cheeky smile. If anything he did was difficult for him, he never showed it. A total original. Pure joy. What an everlasting privilege to play with him.” Brian May 🎸A superlative show of back-to-basics passion and purpose, Star Fleet brims with the freedom of an off-the-cuff break from the day jobs for all involved.The record emerged on October 20th, 1983 as a set of blistering guitar work, rock’n’roll spontaneity and vibrant melody, infused with palpable chemistry and respect between the players. Through the LSC, he invited the world to capture uplifting images from the uncertainty of their new reality. As Covid continued to take its toll on the world, the fast growing stereo community kept on snapping away, lifting their spirits through this often neglected, but uniquely powerful photographic medium. Ushering in the remastered re-release of the album on August 6, the track is made available on July 30.Originally emerging as a single on August 24, 1992, it earned Brian a solo hit when it reached No 5 in the UK Singles Chart. Ahead of that release, a visibly moved and note-perfect May previewed it before some 72,000 fans at Wembley Stadium’s Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert in April 1992, perhaps cementing a misunderstanding about its origins.“My excuse for singing it is, I think, it’s just the best thing I have to offer”, said May, by way of his on-stage introduction to the song. His reason for singing it was not, as was often thought, that he wrote the song about the legendary Queen singer, who had died in 1991. The song has its origins back in 1986-7, when Brian wrote it with the help of a friend, eminent songwriter Frank Musker. Brian May & Kerry Ellis - Panic Attack 2021 (Bob Whitehill Edit) Brian May Official 2021-04-12 | “PANIC ATTACK 2021” is a bold reimagining of 2017’s Ellis/May classic “It's Gonna Be All Right (The Panic Attack Song)” written from a personal standpoint by Brian May long before the world buckled under the heel of the Covid-19, and originally featured on the duo’s Golden Days album. Sharing how the new version came about, Brian said: “At the close of 2020 there was a feeling that perhaps saying goodbye to that year would bring relief from the pandemic and a new era of hope would now begin. Sadly, following a very muted and restricted celebration of Christmas, the New Year dawned with the realisation that the mankind’s struggle was probably going to get worse before it got better. Kerry and I realised that The Panic Attack song now potentially had a whole new meaning to literally millions of people around the world who felt a growing sense of panic. In the UK, there was definitely a feeling that we had all been cheated of our Happy New Year. So we wanted to mark the occasion in a completely real and transparent way.” With Brian hurriedly rewriting the lyrics with a new inspiration, a work-in progress version of Panic Attack 21 was first aired via the pair’s ambitious live link-up on Instagram for New Year’s Eve. “We knew it had to be a train wreck because the delays in this link situation make it impossible for two players at opposite ends of it to be synchronised. Nevertheless we went for it - out of sheer stubbornness really - because we wanted to mark the occasion in a completely real and transparent way.” While technical difficulties did their worst, the performance’s honesty shone through and the sentiment chimed with fans across the world. Buoyed by the messages of approval, Brian and Kerry decided at that point to re-create the track properly with a new studio incarnation of the song. Of course, with Britain now headed back into another lockdown, getting back into the studio to remake the track was impossible for many weeks. Brian finished the new lyrics and Kerry stepped up to create a new vocal performance recording on the only equipment she had – a microphone hooked up to Garage Band on her laptop in her home kitchen ! By e-mailed updates and Zoom discussions, the pair created a new Panic Attack vocal track, while assembling ideas for a new mix and groundbreaking video. Driving the whole project was a desire to create something that would actually rekindle some hope, reminding listeners that in spite of endless wrong turns – and in the words of the song - things WERE, somehow going to be ALL RIGHT !!! Finally, after wrestling further with home recording, restrictions were relaxed to the point where Brian and Kerry were able to meet for a couple of days socially distanced work in Brian’s studio. Long-time Queen and BM engineer and co-producer Justin Shirley Smith - himself newly recovered from Covid - worked alongside Brian on extensive new guitar work, including a wild new solo, and a dynamic mix. In a few days, again swapping ideas with Kerry through digital media, the new track was finished. “I am beyond excited to kick off this year with a song full of hope,” say Kerry. “Putting Panic Attack 2021 together during a lockdown has had its challenges, but that has also been the beauty of it. Music is so powerful and it’s amazing what you can still create with so many restrictions. I hope this song and video gives people as much hope and joy as it did for me and Brian making it. So we wanted to mark the occasion in a completely real and transparent way.” With Brian hurriedly rewriting the lyrics with a new inspiration, a work-in progress version of Panic Attack 21 was first aired via the pair’s ambitious live link-up on Instagram for New Year’s Eve. “We knew it had to be a train wreck because the delays in this link situation make it impossible for two players at opposite ends of it to be synchronised. Nevertheless we went for it - out of sheer stubbornness really - because we wanted to mark the occasion in a completely real and transparent way.” While technical difficulties did their worst, the performance’s honesty shone through and the sentiment chimed with fans across the world. Buoyed by the messages of approval, Brian and Kerry decided at that point to re-create the track properly with a new studio incarnation of the song. Of course, with Britain now headed back into another lockdown, getting back into the studio to remake the track was impossible for many weeks. Brian finished the new lyrics and Kerry stepped up to create a new vocal performance recording on the only equipment she had – a microphone hooked up to Garage Band on her laptop in her home kitchen ! By e-mailed updates and Zoom discussions, the pair created a new Panic Attack vocal track, while assembling ideas for a new mix and groundbreaking video. Driving the whole project was a desire to create something that would actually rekindle some hope, reminding listeners that in spite of endless wrong turns – and in the words of the song - things WERE, somehow going to be ALL RIGHT !!! Finally, after wrestling further with home recording, restrictions were relaxed to the point where Brian and Kerry were able to meet for a couple of days socially distanced work in Brian’s studio. Long-time Queen and BM engineer and co-producer Justin Shirley Smith - himself newly recovered from Covid - worked alongside Brian on extensive new guitar work, including a wild new solo, and a dynamic mix. In a few days, again swapping ideas with Kerry through digital media, the new track was finished. “I am beyond excited to kick off this year with a song full of hope,” say Kerry. “Putting Panic Attack 2021 together during a lockdown has had its challenges, but that has also been the beauty of it. Music is so powerful and it’s amazing what you can still create with so many restrictions. I hope this song and video gives people as much hope and joy as it did for me and Brian making it. Stereoscopy – now known as 3-D – was invented in 1832 by Englishman Charles Wheatstone, and this new instrument, firmly based on the genius of his designs, seemed a perfect opportunity to incorporate steampunk motifs into its appearance. The design also owes a lot to my old friend Chris Dodman at S.B. Westons in Sunbury-upon-Thames, who collaborated on the design of the very first ‘Classic’ folding focussing OWL in 2009. Horizons (3-D Teaser) Brian May Official 2020-09-16 | “This is a TEASER from a twelve minute 3-D video called “HORIZONS”, dedicated to Stephen Hawking, which I put together in a hurry with Denis Pellerin in 2016, to be viewed at STARMUS. Stephen was still alive at that time and enjoying a STARMUS which was all about him, so he was able to sit in the audience with his 3-D glasses and enjoy this short film projected on the screen, dedicated to himself. This was our first attempt at a 3-D movie, with a live sound-track from me, and is now 4 years old - so it’s quite primitive, and we could now remake it with vast improvements ! But I wanted to share this cut-down capture from it at this point as a test - as a practice clip for anyone who wants to watch this month’s stereoscopic global Zoom launch for our new book “Cosmic Clouds”. Author David J. Eicher, stereoscopic astrophotographer J-P Metsävainio and myself will attempt to introduce this amazing book in probably the world’s first virtual 3-D book launch, and we plan to show a selection of 3-D images from the book in real time.
