[Bong Joon Ho In English] Thank you.Q. How do you become great storyteller, best director and win over Hollywood?A. [Bong Joon Ho Translated] So I'm just a very strange person. I just did what I've always done with great artists, with producer Kwak and my cowriter Han Jin Won and with all my actors. It was the same process making this film, but we've had these amazing results. It still feels very surreal. I feel like something will hit me and I will wake up from this dream.[In English] It's literally fucking crazy.Q. So people, when they talk about co-productions, they're always saying that it's difficult to do Hollywood, you know,co-productions with Korea or China or Asian cultures because the stories are different and they don't communicate as well. So how were you able to grasp the universality of the story and translate it in a way that everybody could react to?A. [Bong Joon Ho Translated] So my previous film OKJA was aco-production between Korea and the U.S., but PARASITE, which is a purely Korean film, has garnered more enthusiasm from audiences all over the world, and that's making me think that, perhaps, the deeper I delve into things that are around me, the broader the story can become and the more appeal it can have to an international audience.Q. I wanted to ask you, we have a term here called a "Walter Mitty moment," when people are little boys or little girls and they dream of things that might happen in the future. Was there ever a moment when you were a young boy watching the Oscars on Korean television that maybe you would think of going into filmmaking you said, "Maybe that can be me one day"? As small as the chance might have been, did you ever dream of winning an Oscar?A. [Bong Joon Ho Translated] So I've seen Scorsese lose this awardmultiple times and he didn't know me back then, but I was so frustrated. I remember when he won for THE DEPARTED, I was so excited. So to be nominated with him has been a huge honor.It's hard to believe.Q. And can I also ask you, what does this do for the acceptance in this country of foreign language films, films with subtitles? Is this a breakthrough moment, do you think, and allows you, other people from -- who make films in foreign languages?A. [Bong Joon Ho Translated] So during the Golden Globes I mentioned the one-inch barrier of subtitles, but I feel like that was already a little late. People were already overcoming these barriers. There are streaming services, YouTube, social media, and the environment that we currently live in, I think we are all connected. So I think naturally we will come to a day when a foreign language film -- or not, it doesn't really matter -- a foreign language film winning this won't be much of an issue later on, hopefully.Q. This is amazing. This is history tonight. This is history, not just for the Academy Awards, but for South Korea. Can you please talk about that significance?A. [Kwak Sin Ae Translated] So it's the first time a Korean film has been nominated for the Oscars, so to just win one award would have been a huge celebration, but to win in four categories, six Oscars in total, I can't even imagine the atmosphere in Korea right now and what would happen when we get back. But I did once imagine what it would mean to win Best Picture. To win Best Picture means that this film was voted by the members of the Academy, and I realized that that would signal the beginning of a different kind of change for international cinema, not just for Korea. So in that sense, it would have been great to win. We did win.Q. What a historic night. Four historic wins for South Korea and also for Asians in general. So, Mr. Joon Ho, can you talk about your early influences, Asian directors in particular, who influenced you when you were growing up and to make you what you are now?A. [Bong Joon Ho In English] It's quite many. The first question I want to ask is when you talk about the Oscars, particularly black stories and how they are honored, there is a huge swathe of films and honorees that have told stories about, you know, slavery and segregation and modern-day forms of black trauma. And that's no discredits to those stories because those stories are really important. But I would love for you guys to talk about what it means to you to be standing here as Oscar winners with a story that is so positively about black family and particularly black fatherhood. I'm a such fan of the film.A. (Matthew A. Cherry) Yeah you know, for us, you know, this was kind of an opportunity, I think, to put a little bit of positivity in animation. You know, back when we did the Kickstarter campaign back in 2017, there wasn't a lot of representation in animation. And when I was coming across a lot of these viral videos of dads doing their daughter's hair, they were just so inherently joyful. Our biggest challenge was just to maintain that joy that made people gravitate towards those videos in the first place. So to be here and doing something like this with black hair and black families, it's just, it's literally a dream. And I never would have thought in a million years we would win an Oscar for something like this. It's crazy.A. (Karen Rupert Toliver) Yeah, and we hope that the success of this really just shows that those positive images are things that people want to see, and you can have the variety of imagery, you can do those stories that are more dramatic or sort of more sad. I wanted to know is this father in any way identifying himself with identifying how to approach the beautiful complexity of his daughter's hair? The first part, is there is a unique father/daughter relationship here? Is the father in any way identifying himself through identifying on how to approach doing his daughter's hair?A. (Matthew A. Cherry) Um, yeah, I mean, you know, I think the thing about HAIR LOVE is that it really was born out of wanting to kind of flip those gender norms that we normally see. You know, it's so crazy because oftentimes fathers, when they do basic tasks in the household, it's like, oh, my God, look at fathers, like, being dads, you know what I mean? For us, we wanted to help normalize it. And then in terms of -- you maybe can answer the second question.A. (Karen Rupert Toliver) About just representation in general? Yeah, I think the thing for us is that black hair is very close and personal to us, and so by policing black hair it's like policing ourselves. So freeing back hair means freeing ourselves, and we really want to get stories out that allows us to express ourselves and make it okay to walk the streets however we look with our hair.Q. Hi. And the Crown Act was a real-life component to the message that we were trying to get across with the short film. You know, Senator Holly J. Mitchell, who was a Senator here in California, she authored the bill. And Dove actually backed our Kickstarter campaign. We have a special thanks to them in the credits. And they are a big sponsor of the petition to try to help get it in different states.So for us, you know, when you see a story like DeAndre Arnold's, the young gentleman that was the wrestler that had to cut his locks before the match, when something like this comes about where you can actually have the potential to create a real change and stop these stories from happening, you know, it was our pleasure to get a part of it. And, you know, I'm so glad that we were able to actually shout that out on the stage because I think it's important, and I think if that gets passed, then we won't have these same stories. I have to say that it's, I mean, absolutely amazing performance and amazing film. So, basically, you became an extension of Judy in the film. It's almost like she transcended with you in the film. And what I want to know is, how did you connect? What was it about Judy that connected you so closely by so in heart that you basically became her? I know you've done a lot of research, but was there anything else that you felt very close to with her that you were able to deliver such an incredible performance and become her, essentially?A. That's really kind. Thank you very much. I appreciate that. You know, I can't think about it. I can't extract myself from the collaboration. The only things that I would do by myself are sing in the car on the 405 in traffic, you know, for a year. So that was a lot of practice for anybody who's tried to drive down the 405. But -- and, you know, the reading and things, that was by myself. But what you're talking about, that connectivity, that was a consequence of everybody's work on that set. Everybody was motivated by the same thing. We just appreciate the importance of her legacy and who she was as a person and we all wanted to celebrate her. And everyday we came to work and we just tried things, we just kept trying things. And the director, Rupert Goold, called it "mining for treasure." We were all digging around in sort of the materials of her legacy, her music, her books, interviews, her television show. You know, just everything that we could find that seemed essential in conjuring her essence to tell the story. And that was everybody's work, you know. And it was, you know, the partnership with every single department throughout. And it really was a celebration. We just came to work every day. You could feel the love, the love for Ms. Garland, and that was what we had hoped, so -- And I thank you for your question.Q. Thank you so much for your performance.A. Oh, thank you. That's kind. Thank you.Q. So have you called anyone? Who are you going to call first and how are you going to celebrate tonight?A. Well, my phone is in somebody else's bag right now. So I haven't called anybody. Thank you. That's a really great question. It's not something that I've actually thought about, you know. I wish I could answer you in a couple of days because I would sit with that for a second and I would really think on it, you know. Off the top of my head, if I could look back on this year of experiences, it's really nice when something that really matters to you resonates with someone else. That's -- you know, it's always a huge, wonderful kind of unexpected reaction to -- I don't know, for anyone who creates art. You write an article and somebody calls you and says, that touched me or -- you know? So it's a really nice thing and it makes me happy for everybody that, you know, that I worked with, because I watched how hard everyone worked. It always goes back to that. It always goes back to the collaboration and what you intended and what you hoped for it. And like you said, when it becomes meaningful to someone else, and it's kind of a confirmation that, "Yeah, okay, that's what we meant," you know. And this definitely was not what was on my mind when we started this experience, you know. But in my mind, when I go back to those couple of years that we shared celebrating her and telling the story and building toward it, boy, that's the blessing, isn't it?
