As part of the jam, 30 of our students traveled to Burs, Gotland's oldest settlement. There we hiked around the countryside for three hours, looked at historical sites, got lectures, and had some food in between.

Already present, but suddenly intensified by months of quarantine and/or self-isolation. The potentials of this new situation were perceived by entrepreneurial sex workers, leading to a proliferation of adult content, and challenges for many existing platforms to either exclude or embrace such content.
This paper explores history of the multiple periphery roles of sex workers in the gaming industry. It considers this history against the contemporary intersections of gaming and sex work to reflect on what is counted as games work and how platforms’ efforts to implement distinctions has further entrenched inequality in game cultures.
Thomas Apperley is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre of Excellence in Game Culture Studies at Tampere University. He conducts research on digital games and playful technologies with an emphasis on their impact and influence on culture, particularly areas such as social policy, pedagogy and social inclusion.

They problematize, legitimate, disrupt, and enchant through their storytelling powers, their playful engagements, and their imaginative capacity to take us in and out of realities. But they are also in trouble, and at an important apex, both in terms of their position within the academy and in industry, but also as they exist in a (media) world of increasing complexity and threat: (post?) global pandemic, in the grips of climate change impact, war, and social and cultural re-visioning of identities (#metoo, Black Lives Matter, decolonial activism, and shifts in power/gender relations, to name a few). How is it possible for games to respond, reply, and intervene in such sites of troubling dynamic change? How can they rewrite a potentially dark end of the story? Drawing on ‘troubled’ game histories and using new materialist and decolonial perspectives, I will try to illustrate the ways that games can move us in and out of complexity, but also position us as designers, educators, researchers, and players to speculate about and create an important future of change to create a more joy-full, game-filled world.

It will begin with a discussion of feminist praxis and its critical relationship with ableist approaches to interface design that produce gaming peripherals for mass markets. Then it situates the authors experiences and work in the in the alt ctrl community at the intersection of feminist praxis, mass manufacturing and craft epistemologies, and the coming together of a variegated, multidisciplinary set of artists interested in applying hardware, software design, play, and user experience skills to the production of handmade cultural objects. Finally, it uses the authors experiences in the alt ctrl community to insist that bespoke controllers can provide a starting point for thinking about the roles that handmade cultural objects can play.

It, play, is often treated as a disposable thing that we become more and more disconnected from as we age and attempt to perform maturity in our world. We engage the world with pragmatic seriousness and goal oriented interactions in an attempt to claim our safe space within our various social strata. In those safe spaces, what little play we hold onto also becomes very goal oriented. It’s locked into containers of distraction that celebrate our participation with achievements and awards; urges us to buy the next and newest version; appetizers us to place on leaderboards; and encourages us to embrace false scarcities scrambling to get special trinkets that we can tie to our identities and continue to confirm and replicate the traumas of colonization and capitalism. This kind of play becomes habit forming and exhausting, but rarely leads us to joy.
Game designer, youth worker, teacher, performer, and relative to the world, Allen Turner, will talk about how play might be one of the great medicines that is hiding in plain sight. Through an exploration of games, roleplay, metaphor, parable and anecdotal experiences of using play to find ways to push against and redefine our traumas and narratives, Turner will invite us to find a place for play in our healing modalities, use it to catch our breath and see our own beauty, and to recognize where play already resides in our personal ecologies and how to bolster it up.
