This is actually a Language Arts project...

Gumi, the green-haired girl, is wearing a World War 2 women's marine uniform.
Yuuma, the pink-haired boy, is wearing a Kamikaze uniform. A Kamikaze, which literally means 'god-wind,' is a Japanese suicide bomber.
Oliver, the blonde boy, is wearing a US Marine uniform, circa World War 2.
Yes, they DID have hair dye back then.

The background image is the symbol that is on the Kamikaze headbands. It's a slightly off-center red sun, which was Japan's Naval Flag. It was also supposed to represent the rising sun, because Japan was known as the place where the sun rises.

Senbonsakura literally translates as 'a thousand cherry blossoms.' Japan gave the US some cherry trees after World War 2 was over.

The battle of Iwo Jima was won by the US.
After fighting for a long time and eventually trapping the Japanese in a gauntlet formation, the US scouted about for any movement. Some Japanese soldiers had already made a suicide attack, so the US wasn't sure whether there was anyone left.
The US didn't find anyone. All was quiet. So, they climbed the mountain where they had trapped the Japanese (Mount Suribachi) with a flag in hand. After posing for a picture, the US raised their flag. It was the first foreign flag on Japanese soil.
Of course, after they stopped to celebrate, the US was attacked by another troop of soldiers yelling, "Banzai!". The Japanese soldiers were killed.
Later, one of the leading officers decided that the flag that was currently flying on top of Mt. Suribachi (Suu-ree-bah-chee) belonged in a museum. He had some men run back up the mountain with a big, newer flag that had been found on one of the US Marine ships. This flag-raising wasn't as well known among the military personnel, at least not as well known as it was in the states. This was because, at the last second, a different photographer took a picture of the six men raising the flag. Somehow, this picture got back to the US first and was on the front of just about every newspaper before the first picture was delivered.
A sculptor named de Welden saw the picture and instantly began sculpting. Later, his sculpture became the first Iwo Jima Monument. It was made of stone and funded personally by de Welden himself.
Almost as soon as he finished his sculpture, the government took donations and taxes and such towards another Iwo Jima memorial. So, de Welden constructed another one that was bigger and made of bronze, which is the one that stands in Washington, D.C. today. The original stone one was recently put up for auction in New York.

The Iwo Jima Memorial is also called the Marine Corps War Memorial.

Iwo Jima was renamed Iwo To by the Japanese in 2007. Both names mean 'Sulfur Island,' which is fitting because along with being a naval and aerial base, that is where the Japanese mined sulfur.

The island of Iwo To is about eight square miles.
