It seems like such a mundane thing to do, but there is something about confirming your goals and holding yourself accountable by just writing them down and saying them out loud. It's almost like making them official in that simple way makes you not want to let yourself down.
I like to set mine each year on my Birthday and in this video I do just that.

I always felt creative and did well in situations where I needed to be creative, but I wasn't pursuing anything in the arts in my life. So I always felt like something was missing.
In this video I reflect on how finding art and filmmaking has completely changed my life and 3 reasons you should do the same.

I started in my bedroom and got tired of getting paint everywhere, knocking over supplies, and jamming my toe into my easel when I woke up.
I needed a change at that change was only about 30 ft away..in my backyard.
In this video I'll talk about my shed to studio conversion and all the equipment I currently use since I get asked about it alot on here.

This video is about how I never imagined I'd become an artist and how life can take you so many different routes to find the things you love.
I was going through some old boxes and found book, artwork, etc I'd written and old school projects where I mentioned what I wanted to be when I grew up. Spoiler alert...it wasn't anything in the arts.
Give this a watch to find out what I originally planned on being and how i ended up where I am :)

In this video I dive into why it feels different and also why it's actually a good thing for you as a creator.
I got alot of comments in a previous post about those who have started their channel and feel a bit discouraged or those on the fence about starting one so I think this insight might help ease your concerns.

Music is such a huge part of my creative process and just in my life in general. I always have visuals and ideas come to mind during certain songs that are so clear I feel like I can paint them. So that's what I did.
This painting was spread over a several weeks but totaled around 50 hours to complete from start to finish.
Btw..I finished this way before this song became part of the new GAP ad campaign...just wanted to clear that up that I have proof...haha.
Let me know what other songs I should do in the comments!

I haven't experimented much with documenting my life out in public so I wanted to bring my camera along on a date.

It actually ended up being much easier than I thought.
Enjoy.
#filmmaking #filmmaker #cinematography #sonyfx30 #sonyalpha #cinematicWhy Im Making a 10 Part Film Entirely ALONE.Darren Naylor2024-02-26 | This project initially came to be more out of necessity than anything.
I wanted to create but didn't have others around me to create with. I don't live near other actors. I don't know any editors. I don't know any directors. Well, at least that's what I would tell myself.
I'm sure I could find any of the above if I wanted to search and network for them. But what I realized was, I just wanted to create and didn't want to have to wait or depend on anyone else. So if I learned the entire filmmaking process from start to finish I could always create whenever I wanted.
That's basically my life goal at this point.
How can I create for the rest of my life in different capacities.
I think this is a good start.

It was a crazy few days that led to two paintings being purchased but the point of this video is to share how it happened and how you can find the same opportunities near you.
I've made a couple of videos now about the financial side of being an artists because it's just not something I see people talk about enough. This space can also feel out of reach in terms of getting into galleries, public spaces, etc but I cover how accessible things actually are in your own backyard.

But since I was doing some planning for the next year or so in terms of what'd I'd like to do with artwork sales I thought I'd calculate the previous years.
I feel like artists never really discuss the financial portion of the art world, especially from a realistic point of view, so I thought I'd share what a year looked like for me when I started and what the breakdown was.
00:00 Introduction 01:42 The First Way 02:49 The Second Way 05:49 The Third WayMy Museum Painting SOLD!Darren Naylor2024-02-01 | My painting that was in the De Young Museum was purchased before the show ended so I got to bring it home and get it all cleaned up before shipping it to it's new home.
It was a great way to finish off the year!
I have alot more painting to do this year compared to last year so it was a great catalyst for things to come in 2024.
I also show a new boxing method for packaging paintings in this video so check that out as well.
#art #artist #oilpainting #painting #artgallery #artstudio #artmuseumI Returned A Macbook Pro For THESE 3 Filmmaking ToolsDarren Naylor2024-01-26 | This video is more about trying to maximize needs vs wants and really itemizing the tools that will help your process instead of buying the next best thing.
I've gotten better actually getting rid of items that are getting no use and making sure the ones I do add to my kit are going to be in the rotation. But I still catch myself wanting the next best thing when it comes to camera, phone, laptops at times. Sometimes it's actually to benefit from the newest tech, but other times...like in this video...it was just because I wanted the new thing.
The 3 new items I mention in this video have already been heavily in my rotation so I'm glad I made the right choice.
Do you struggle with wants vs needs when it comes to equipment?

00:00 Introduction 01:24 Need #1 03:05 Need #2 04:26 Need #3 05:26 The Surprise FindOil Paint vs Acrylic (cost)Darren Naylor2024-01-23 | Since the day I began painting it seemed I only heard negatives or at least different complaints/concerns about oil paint in relation to acrylic paint.
It's something that kept me from switching over much sooner and something I regret not finding out for myself. There are many I would hear from the dry times, the solvent use, etc but one of the main things I would hear was about how expensive it was.
But once I switched and started using oils I came to a very different conclusion that I discuss in this video.
Let me know what you think or what your experience has been in the comments!
#art #artist #oilpainting #acrylicpainting #artstudio #artgallery 00:00 Introduction 00:18 The Backstory 01:26 Reason #1 03:13 Reason #2 04:03 Reason #3Fix These 2 Things To Start Selling Your PaintingsDarren Naylor2024-01-08 | I just want to start. this by saying I forgot to set my white balance and exposure before filming so the entire time a small light on my desk in front of me was altering everything, haha.
Anyway, this wasn't a planned video but I happened to get two messages in the same day from people asking for advice on being able to sell their paintings. I know it may just feel at times like it's a matter of exposure or some trick that's going to generate a ton of buyers but in actuality the main things that need to be fixed are much simpler than that.
I sold the least amount of paintings when my work just wasn't ready, wasn't developed, and didn't have any presentation other than some posts on instagram.
Once I started having more of a clear creative direction on top of months and months of practice and learning I start gaining more interest and getting commission requests.
So in this video I mentioned the 2 main things I notice these frustrated artists have in common and how I would go about fixing them.
If you have any questions or want me to elaborate anything just let me now in the comments!

But it was two days before Christmas and I still had a million work, gift related, and packing things to do so the title should be more like 7 hours...
Yes, it's my own fault for waiting but it's been a busier than normal December and I also like the thought of challenging myself with knocking both paintings out on short notice.
I was able to get them done on time and deliver them without ruining any of the wet paint so it was a successful Christmas surprise :)

#cinematography #oilpainting #painting #art #artist #sonya7ivDivinci Resolve Studio Is Worth It Because of THIS!Darren Naylor2023-12-06 | This may be old news for some but I'm new to Divinci Resolve in general, let alone the studio version, so features like this are incredible to me.
As someone who started with Premiere Pro about a year ago, I was always frustrated with trying to find shortcuts, videos, third party platforms, etc that could allow me to do things like masks and other editing tricks easier. Creating videos is already laboursome enough of a task, the last thing I want to have to do is manually create these effects every single time I need them.
This is obviously just one of the hundreds of amazing effects and features of Divinci Resolve Studio but it's easily the best decision I've made in my new filmmaking journey and this feature alone make it's worth upgrading to.

I brought my camera to get beach footage and just couldn't help passing up on using the hotel room as a film set.
It's a horror short film only because it's Halloween and I haven't made one yet. The hotel was beautiful and not creepy at all, haha. Nothing a little sound design and color grading couldn't fix.
All in all it was recorded in about two hours and I only had natural light and room lighting to work with.
Hope you like it!
#filmmaking #cinematography #filmmaker #sonya7iv #sonyalpha #shortfilm #horrorshortsChange your life one baby step at a time βΆοΈ #cinematography #filmmaking #filmmaker #sonya7ivDarren Naylor2023-10-29 | ...How To Create The Life You WantDarren Naylor2023-10-29 | Let me start by saying this is obviously the very short version of the story. Let me also mention that you're not looking at some beach filter. That's actual sand and smudges on the lens that I couldn't see at the time -_-
I actually had no intention to film a video like this during our mini trip but once I was back on this beach I hadn't been on in 10 years (I realized after it's actually like 11.5 years) I had so many memories and feelings come back from a very different time.
I felt the most lost and confused I've ever been at that age and during that time, but I was somehow still filled with optimism that I'd figure things out. If I could give advice to anyone that may feel the way I did at the time, it would be to try things relentlessly. Say yes to opportunities, pick up new hobbies often, start that business you keep thinking about. Many of these things will come and go but you'll start to get a better idea of what you're interested in and you'll also prove to yourself that you're the type of person who will see things through.
The key to this is not to get discouraged when some things don't work out and to pivot and keep pushing forward. Also, be sure be networking on a regular basis to build your core group of likeminded people. You want people around you who are always advancing and wanted the most out of life. They'll keep you motivated and will lead to future opportunities you may not even realize yet.
I don't know why I'm posting about this but if this helps one person I'll be happy because I didn't have someone to tell em these things when I was in my early twenties and I always hoped for some sort've mentor or someone to point in the right direction.
Anyway, I also shot my first horror short film while on this trip so I'll be posting that on Halloween :)
