The "Two Little Pieces" were written for the Temasek Junior College orchestra upon the request of its resident conductor Mr Chan Tze Law, who also conducted the Singapore Youth Orchestra in the first performance of the "Fugato" from my "Prelude, Interlude, and Fugato". The pieces are deliberately written in an easily accessible late-romantic idiom so that they can be mastered in a relatively limited time by a young orchestra. They are, in a way, pieces which I had always wanted to write as a teenager many years ago but which could not be satisfactorily penned down at that time owing to the lack of compositional technique.
The first piece "Idyll" is in the key of E major, a favourite among romantic composers and one that I am particularly fond of myself. The piece starts with characteristic pizzicato figurations in the strings over which a rising yearning melody unfolds in the first violins. These first 20 bars or so provide almost all the material with which the movement is composed using Wagnerian techniques of motivic development. After moving into the tonic minor, the music reasserts itself in major keys while the rising intervals of the opening melody become increasingly prominent. Chromatic figurations finally lead to a catharsis which is built upon the opening figurations. The movement dies away in a hymn-like passage embroidered by solo cello and violin.
"Dance" is stylistically reminiscent of Grieg and Schumann, and is probably best described as being in abridged sonata form. The first subject group comprises three main portions: the jaunty, opening figures in A minor, a pastoral section characterised by unexpected modulations, and a semiquaver figuration which acts as a bridge to the second subject. This is a long, flowing melody which modulates to remote keys and which is subsequently embroidered with figuration derived from the first subject group. After reaching a climax, the recapitulation begins with an elliptical version of the first subject group. This leads to a restatement of the second subject on cellos and horns, this time in the tonic major and decorated with semiquaver figurations from the transition. The piece ends triumphantly with a short coda in A major.
Two Little Pieces was first performed by the Temasek Junior College Orchestra at a concert at the Victoria Concert Hall, Singapore, on 5th May 1994 with Chan Tze Law conducting. "Stasis" has its origins in some of the ethnic music of the ASEAN countries, particularly Thailand and Bali, where an intricate fabric of rhythmic activity would often convey the sense of a larger equilibrium. This idea of stillness in change led to a piece which, if not strictly "minimalist" in the currently fashionable sense, is at least strongly influenced by such tendencies. In a way, it is a reaction against the complexities of post-Webern serialism so fashionable in the 1950s and 60s.
The whole piece is a succession of modes which are subsets of the scale of A major. Initially comprising only two or three notes, the modes wax and wane in complexity, sometimes becoming pentatonic or hexatonic. Controlled improvisation is used in several places in the work and exotic instrumental effects such as bowed vibraphone, water gong and exhalation sounds contribute to the air of fantasy. In a long pentatonic passage (the scale here is G-sharp, A, B, D and E) for solo flute, strings, percussion and woodwind, C-sharp is avoided until the climactic point, where finally all notes in A major are used simultaneously. After that, the modes gradually diminish in complexity. Vibraphone, celesta and solo violin end the piece on a pentatonic chord.
Stasis was a work specially commissioned by the Singapore Youth Orchestra management committee for the SYO's performance on their tour to Perth, Western Australia in 1988.
It was first performed in Singapore by the Singapore Youth Orchestra under the baton of Music Director Vivien Goh in March 1988 and had its Australian premiere later that same year. Although the composer had a musical rationale for the name "Stasis", another source claimed that he named it after the amplifier that he owned at the time.

Commissioned by Adrian Chiang and the Maris Stella High School Symphonic Band in 2021 for performance at the Singapore Youth Festival Arts Presentation for School Bands, this piece is part of a series of compositions celebrating Singapore’s unsung heroes.
The piece serves as a salute to Lim Bo Seng, who is recognised as one of Singapore’s most famous war heroes, playing an active role in Force 136, which was a secret service organisation in Malaya active during WWII. He accomplished, among other feats, blowing up the Causeway to impede the advance of the Japanese, as well as setting up an intelligence network (Operation Zipper) in four urban areas with the aim of recapturing Malaya with British support by 1945. Unfortunately, he was caught in 1944 and, unyielding in the face of the Kempeitai’s brutality, eventually died in a jail in Perak due to severe malnutrition in the same year.
The title of this piece was decided upon by the band members of the Maris Stella High School Symphonic Band, and the spirited music portrays his unwavering spirit and bravery.

On the night of the 30th of February, 2018, a great tragedy happened in the icy plains of Malaysia. An ancient giant robot-chicken awoke from its long slumber, and gazed upon the lands of the tropical country. Full of destructive malice, its first target was a nearby chicken farm, and began a slow ponderous march towards it, while broadcasting a twisted version of the French folk song La Poule through its speakers.
The chickens, seeing a gigantic version of themselves, thought it was their saviour from the heavens, here to free them from captivity. They started clucking in celebration, until the first laser bolt from the giant chicken hit the farm. There was great panic and chaos, and before long, all that was left was a carnage of blood and feathers.
The military responded swiftly to the threat, deploying their tanks and fighter jets and began an all out offensive to take the giant chicken down. Mysteriously, it seemed to be protected by an impenetrable forcefield. As the giant chicken shrugged off the attacks, it squawked, ”You shoot me down, but I won’t fall. AYAM TITANIUM!!!”
Before long, even the military was defeated by this seemingly indestructible creature, and as it marched into the night, the cold winter winds blew. The giant chicken’s total victory was inevitable.

"As the youth of Singapore move on to join the workforce, they can bring in exuberant energy, the ability to assess problems from different perspectives, and solve them creatively. This reminds me of the multi-perspective environment of outer space, where there isn’t an up, down, left or right. Hence, the event of Singapore going into the future is much like a Party in Space.
Party in Space brings us on a futuristic and energetic ride, led by today’s youth. The main motif of the work goes through various transformations such as inversion and retrograde, to display the multiple perspectives of our youth. "To me, Singapore is not only a location, but also an event. Ever since her founding 200 years ago, she has been a huge collective of diverse people coming together, much like a Festival. She is also ever shifting, evolving and tweaking, creating a unique identity for herself.
Like Singapore herself, Festival on Earth seeks to give wind bands an opportunity to create identities for themselves through decision making. In a somewhat modular fashion, bands can choose between various instrumental and structural choices in the piece.
The Festival opens with a loud pop, and a celebratory procession begins. As one starts exploring the festival grounds, we come first to a puppet show. We return to the celebratory atmosphere and follow it until arriving at a romantic play. The next stop is a cluster of booths, and depending on the order you choose to see, we have a tribal dance, a carousel and a game booth.
