Dark Truth Behind Hip-Hop's Glamorization of Pimping. In the wake of the P. Diddy scandal, more attention has been drawn to this malignant epidemic in America. Today, investigative journalist and author Brian Joseph joins the program.
It’s been more than six years since investigative reporter Brian Joseph began researching the underbelly of sex trafficking, starting at the Las Vegas Review-Journal. His investigation extracted a harsh reality here in the United States: Law enforcement agencies trip up, and their investigations into sex trafficking become compromised, and self-interest corrupts news organizations and the corridors of power that might otherwise have been able to help bring sex trafficking in America to an end.
Joseph says it’s time to face the realities of sex trafficking, pimps, and prostitution in America…all of us. That mission and his work have culminated in his book, Vegas Concierge: Sex Trafficking, Hip Hop, and Corruption In America.

Today, we discuss Matthew Perry's death and the Doctors who illegally obtained ketamine, which caused his death. We will explore the parallels of Michael Jackson's death at the hands of Dr. Conrad Murray and the opioid documentaries "Crime of the Century" and "American Pain", both available on the MAX streaming platform. I also dive into my personal thoughts regarding addiction and the chorus of sycophants that often surround high-profile people experiencing substance use disorders.
Rest easy, Matthew Perry. You were loved by millions.
Background on the case: Dr. Mark Chavez has pleaded guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute ketamine in connection with the death of actor Matthew Perry. Chavez, a San Diego-based physician, was one of five individuals charged in the case. He admitted to illegally obtaining ketamine and transferring it to another doctor, Dr. Salvador Plasencia, who then sold it to Perry’s assistant. Perry died from the "acute effects of ketamine" in October 2023.
Chavez now faces up to 10 years in prison. Other defendants in the case include Plasencia, who has pleaded not guilty, and Kenneth Iwamasa, Perry's assistant, who has also pleaded guilty. The case has raised significant attention due to the involvement of multiple medical professionals and Perry’s tragic death.

The Ramblings (You Won't Believe the Lies!) from a Convicted Murderer Psychopathic Father.
Back in the 1990s, after Collier’s father was in prison for murdering his mother, he was interviewed live on a radio program called What’s Right What’s Left with Pastor Ernie Sanders. Speaking from prison, Collier’s father professed his innocence while discussing the conspiracies and crooked law enforcement he claims were out to frame him. For the very first time, Collier listens to his dad’s interview as he records this episode. Hear his responses and outrage to the lies his father peddles as he tries to clear his name by smearing Collier’s dead mother.
* Hear what Collier’s father has to say about Collier just a few years after he took to the witness stand to help convict his father in his mother’s murder. * Smuggling gold and dr*gs on the black market? * The wild explanations Collier’s father gave for his wife’s disappearance and death.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The case against Donna Adelson has been continued. Jury selection was supposed to begin this afternoon, but defense attorney Dan Rashbaum abruptly resigned.
Adelson, who is the fifth person to be charged in the murder of FSU law professor Dan Markel, was scheduled to go on trial this week. However, the delay has to do with the fact that Rashbaum also represented Donna’s son, Charlie Adelson, at his murder trial. Charlie says he never signed a waiver saying he was aware of the conflict of interest, which would make it impossible for Rashbaum to properly cross-examine him as a State witness. Alex Morris will stay on retainer as Donna’s attorney, but he needs more time to prepare as well as bring on co-counsel.
Prosecutors say Donna was behind the plot to kill Markel, her ex-son-in-law, who was gunned down while pulling into his garage.

The family of the police officer, John O’Keefe, whom Karen Read is accused of killing by hitting him with her vehicle and leaving him to die in the snow, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her and two bars where they had been drinking that night.
The lawsuit holds Read responsible for O’Keefe’s death and also accuses the bars of negligence for continuing to serve her alcohol despite signs of intoxication. According to the lawsuit, the first bar served Read seven alcoholic drinks in approximately 90 minutes on the night of January 28, 2022. It also alleges that she carried her last drink from that bar into a second establishment, where she was served a shot and a mixed alcoholic drink within an hour.

Former Stoughton, Massachusetts police detective Matthew Farwell has been accused of killing 23-year-old Sandra Birchmore in 2021 while she was pregnant with what she told him was his child.
A grand jury indictment filed Tuesday in federal court alleges that Farwell strangled Birchmore to death inside her Canton apartment and then staged the scene to make it look like she had died by taking her own life. Her death had previously been ruled a suicide with no foul play involved by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

The family of the police officer, John O’Keefe, whom Karen Read is accused of killing by striking him with her vehicle and leaving him to die in the snow, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against her and two bars where they had been drinking that night.
The lawsuit attributes O’Keefe’s death to Read and also accuses the bars of negligence for continuing to serve her alcohol despite signs of intoxication. It claims that the first bar served her seven alcoholic drinks within about 90 minutes on the night of January 28, 2022. Read then took her last drink to a second bar, where she was served a shot and a mixed drink within an hour.

Additional Notes on today's episode: Intramural scientists at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), and collaborators from The Scripps Research Institute, found that semaglutide reduces alcohol consumption and binge-like drinking in a rodent model of alcohol misuse. Published in the June 2023 issue of the journal JCI Insight, the study adds to growing preclinical evidence that the glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) system plays a role in alcohol and other substance use disorders and that GLP-1 receptor agonists show potential for treating people with alcohol use disorder (AUD).
GLP-1 is a gut hormone that stimulates insulin secretion after eating. This promotes a feeling of fullness, helps regulate blood sugar, and reduces hunger cravings. Semaglutide and other GLP-1 agonists—medications that bind to GLP-1 receptors and mimic their effects—are currently used as treatments for diabetes and obesity.
“Parts of the brain that drive eating behaviors overlap extensively with the drive to use alcohol or other substances,” explained Lorenzo Leggio, M.D., Ph.D., and Leandro Vendruscolo, Pharm.D., Ph.D., two of the study's senior authors. They added that there is also an overlap between the brain mechanisms that regulate overeating and those that contribute to the development and maintenance of substance use disorders, including AUD.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who was one of the leading contenders to become the Democratic vice presidential candidate, has seen his record come under scrutiny, with some of his actions while in office receiving renewed attention.
In 2011, Ellen Greenberg, a 27-year-old Philadelphia teacher, was found dead in her apartment by her fiance. She had 20 stab wounds to her body, including in the back of her neck. The medical examiner's office initially ruled the death a homicide, but police publicly objected to the ruling because her apartment door was locked from the inside and her fiancé, who said he broke down the door to get to her, had no defensive wounds. The medical examiner's office then revised the findings, saying the cause of death was suicide.
Greenberg's parents had been fighting since her death to have the case reexamined, and when one of their lawyers became Philadelphia's district attorney in 2018, the family appealed to him to reopen the case. Citing a conflict of interest, however, he recused himself and sent the case to state Attorney General Josh Shapiro's office.
In February 2022, the attorney general's office announced it had reviewed the case and ruled once again the cause of death was suicide. However, in July 2022, Shapiro's office referred the case back to the Philadelphia district attorney's office, after critics cited unverified claims that Shapiro had connections to Greenberg's fiancé's family. The attorney general's office said, "While the Office of Attorney General does not have an actual conflict in this matter, circumstances beyond our control have created the appearance of a conflict."
Shapiro's team previously told The Philadelphia Inquirer it had never addressed or clarified the allegations because it was "not acknowledging unfounded accusations."
In July, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court agreed to hear Greenberg's parents' case. Their attorney, Joe Podraza, told CBS affiliate WHP-TV they are seeking a decision on "whether coroners and medical examiners have absolute power, or can they be challenged when the evidence shows they are not only mistaken, but grossly mistaken."
The Greenbergs have also filed a civil suit against members of the medical examiner's office, the police department, and the DA's office.

The Karen Read case returns to court Monday, exactly three weeks after a mistrial was declared in her murder trial.
Netflix announces 3-part documentary series about the Karen Read murder case
The prosecution and defense are expected back in Dedham’s Norfolk Superior Court for a status hearing on setting a date for Read’s second trial.
Deadlocked jurors sent a note to Judge Beverly Cannone on July 1 indicating they were at an “impasse” and future deliberations would be futile, ultimately bringing an end to Read’s two-month trial.
Read’s legal team has filed motions to dismiss two of the three criminal charges that she faces in connection with the death of O’Keefe, including the second-degree murder charge and leaving the scene of a fatal crash.

Daniel Eric Markel was a Canadian-born attorney and law professor who authored numerous works on retribution in criminal law and sentencing, focusing on the role of punishment in the criminal justice system. Originally from Toronto, he earned a J.D. from Harvard University in 2001. After working as a law clerk for a federal judge and as an associate at a law firm, he joined the faculty of Florida State University in 2005.
Markel was killed in Tallahassee, Florida, in 2014, in a murder-for-hire motivated by child custody issues following Markel's divorce from Wendi Adelson, a clinical law professor and child advocate also employed at Florida State University at the time. Wendi Adelson has not been charged, but she has been named, together with her brother Charlie and mother Donna, as "conspirators" in the killing. Four individuals have been convicted in the case. Luis Rivera pled guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Sigfredo Garcia was found guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to life in prison. After a mistrial was declared in her original trial, Katherine Magbanua was found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder in her retrial; she was sentenced to life in prison plus two consecutive 30-year sentences. Charlie Adelson, Wendi Adelson's brother, was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. On Tuesday, December 12, 2023, Charlie Adelson was sentenced to life in prison for first-degree murder plus an additional 30 years each for conspiracy and solicitation convictions. Donna Adelson, Markel's former mother-in-law, was arrested at the Miami International Airport on a warrant from Leon County, apparently trying to flee to Vietnam, a country with no extradition treaty with the U.S. She is charged with first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation of murder. Her trial is set for September 17, 2024.

On July 13, 2024, former President Donald J. Trump survived an assassination attempt. President Biden ordered a full review of security for former President Trump’s Pennsylvania rally and to assess the security in place for the Republican National Convention this week in Milwaukee. On Sunday afternoon, Trump said he would head to Wisconsin for the RNC as planned. He’d thanked the nation on Sunday morning for its concern in the wake of an attempt on his life the evening before.
Today, I am joined by James E. Craig, the 42nd Chief of Police for the City of Detroit.
About my guest: has dedicated his life to service, spending more than four decades in law enforcement, leaving the cities he served safer than he found them. In 2013, Craig was asked by Governor Rick Snyder to serve as the 42nd Chief of Police for the City of Detroit, his hometown. Over the next eight years, Craig led a department of 2800 sworn and civilian personnel and achieved great success, propelling the DPD into the 21st century. Accomplishments as the Chief of Police in Detroit include a significant reduction in violent crime rates through the utilization of data and analysis to support proactive policing, quicker response times for priority 911 calls, and the institution of programs to cut gang membership in at-risk communities. Craig received widespread acclaim for his leadership during the unrest in the summer of 2020. While other cities were marred by looting, riots, and destruction, Detroit stood strong, a model for other cities to strive to.
Throughout the morning, Republicans and Democrats alike called for lowering the temperature of political rhetoric. Amid those calls, there were questions about how this happened and descriptions of the rally as a “security failure.” One person at the rally was also killed, and two others were critically injured, officials said. Overnight, the FBI named the suspect in the shooting at a rally in Butler, Pa., but offered no other details. Authorities said Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pa., was involved.

Closing arguments were presented Tuesday morning in Karen Read's' high-profile murder trial at Norfolk Superior Court in Dedham, Massachusetts. After calling 68 witnesses over the course of nearly two months, prosecutors rested their case on Friday. The defense completed its list of six witnesses on Monday and then rested its case.
Then, Judge Beverly Cannone gave instructions to jurors before they began deliberations. Seventeen jurors were initially sworn in, but two were excused during the trial. That left the panel with nine women and six men. The jury of 15 was trimmed to 12 for deliberations. Judge Cannone picked the foreperson, and then 11 were randomly selected to deliberate by a bingo cage with wooden number blocks.
The jury heard from 74 witnesses, 68 of them for the prosecution, during 29 days of testimony.
On Monday, in the Karen Read trial, the defense called their final three witnesses: a pathologist and two outside accident reconstruction experts who analyzed the evidence in the case after being commissioned by federal investigators.

A party had gathered there that night following a night out drinking at Waterfall Bar and Grill, nominally to celebrate Brian Albert Jr.’s 23rd birthday, to which O’Keefe and Read were both invited. By 6:03 a.m. on Jan. 29, 2022, Jennifer McCabe placed a call to 911 reporting that she, Read, and another friend named Kerry Roberts found O’Keefe’s body in the front yard.
