What it COSTS to RENOVATE This 40x60 BARN — Ep. 289 Flock Finger Lakes 2024-12-17 | When we first got to the land in the late fall of 2020, we couldn't really fully appreciate the 40'x60' metal-clad barn that came with the property. Little did we know, it would really become the epicenter of lots of day-to-day activity—from designing and making cabinetry, to finishing siding, to even building a tiny house. To make it more aesthetically pleasing and multifunctional for us, we decided to renovate the exterior and to do the majority of the work ourselves. Designing and RENOVATING a 40x60 POLE BARN — Ep. 288 Flock Finger Lakes 2024-12-10 | When we first moved to Flock, we could not appreciate the 40'x60' pole barn that came with the property. We were too distracted by its industrial aesthetic, which didn't fit with the overall vision of the land. Over time, we came to really appreciate the value that it added and felt so fortunate that it came with the property. The first iteration of it was making an insulated workshop area in the barn for Sander to have his office and a woodworking shop—and now the time has come to get the hemlock cladding on. There is still much that we'd like to do with the barn, but the most important step was to get the exterior on. We uncovered many cool gems, like the home of the first woman who ran for President, an opening to the underground railroad, and the longest running business in town, for example. We took the day to tour some of the iconic bed & breakfasts, sweet shops and cafes, vintage stores, and other purveyors and restaurants. How Were EDGING 600 FEET of GARDEN BEDS Flock Finger Lakes 2024-10-12 | After putting in a number of large garden beds in the 1/8th-acre lawn in front the Meadow House, we realized that we would need some solid garden bed edging to prevent the grass from encroaching in on the beds. We found a high quality, flexible, and affordable aluminum garden bed edging and we'll share our tools and techniques for edging beds as well. Many of us have been trained to understand that our monarch caterpillars rely on milkweed for their food, but most of us are not able to connect our other native Lepidopterans (Leps) to the plants they eat as larvae. Since a video like this can get really unwieldy, I'm covering herbaceous host plants that have real horticultural value in the garden space—and in most cases, also do double duty as both a host plant and pollinator plant with beautiful blooms.
