Electric and magnetic field simulation of a Tesla coil using FEMM. ArcAttack! 2018-04-15 | What you are seeing here is an animated simulation of a solid state Tesla coil's electric(left) and magnetic(right) domains.We used a handful of free engineering tools to make it happen.First, LTspice was used to create a simulation of a Tesla coil. After the simulation was complete, the measurements were exported to a spreadsheet. We used google sheets and some spreadsheet math to dither down thousands of data points to what would end up being 20 or so samples per second, for each domain, once we decided on the final video length for the given pulse.For the sake of making it understandable, we slowed it down so that 200us of the simulated pulse translates into about a minute long video. Then finally using FEMM, we wrote a LUA script to import the measurements , create the corresponding electrostatic and electromagnetic simulations, and export them as bitmaps. This part took about a dozen hours utilizing 3 or 4 laptops. The images were then imported into video editting software, combined so that the electric and magnetic domains were present in the same image for each frame, and exported to video.
