In 1998 Thiel and several others cofounded Confinity, which was designed to handle payments between Palm Pilots. The following year it merged with Elon Musk’s X.com, and PayPal was created, with Thiel becoming its CEO and chairman. Designed to create “a new world currency,” the e-commerce company specialized in Internet money transfers. PayPal proved hugely successful, aided by its use on the online marketplace eBay. In 2002 eBay acquired PayPal for $1.5 billion. The transaction made Thiel a multimillionaire, and he subsequently invested in a number of start-ups, notably Facebook (2004), an online social networking service. He also established the hedge fund Clarium Capital Management.
In 2004 Thiel cofounded Palantir Technologies, a data analytics firm. Critics questioned its subsequent involvement with the CIA and other government agencies, especially given Thiel’s libertarianism. However, he argued that Palantir’s technology allowed for focused data retrieval, preventing overreaching searches and more draconian measures. The company was also used by banks to detect fraud and handle other cybersecurity efforts. In 2005 Thiel established Founders Fund, a venture capital firm. It invested in such companies as Airbnb, Lyft, and Musk’s SpaceX. Thiel also founded the Thiel Fellowship, which seeks to revolutionize education. He's also the author of Zero to One.

What began as a somewhat thankless crusade has now become the intellectual foundation for one of the Trump administration's signature initiatives. As Chair of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Caucus, Ernst finds herself in the position of watching her longstanding concerns become White House priorities—from fraudulent payments to foreign exploitation of small business research programs. She’s working to implement solutions she's spent years developing, including a blueprint for $2 trillion in potential taxpayer savings. Ernst recently announced that she won’t be seeking reelection, creating a 15-month timeline for her to put her stamp on the U.S. Congress. The convergence of her institutional knowledge and Trump's reform mandate, with her lame-duck freedom to take risks, positions her as a unique figure in determining whether and how DOGE leaves a lasting impact on the federal government. The question isn't just what she hopes to accomplish in her remaining tenure, but what the government efficiency movement may look like without its most dedicated practitioner. Senator Ernst joins Evan to discuss her legislative efforts to root out government waste and what she hopes to accomplish before she leaves the Senate.America First Antitrust w/ Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust Gail SlaterFoundation for American Innovation2025-07-15 | Gail Slater is the Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust at the Department of Justice (DOJ). She was nominated in December of last year and confirmed by the Senate in March on a bipartisan 78-19 vote.
She inherited some major antitrust cases brought by prior administrations—including against Google, Apple, Visa, and LiveNation. And in her short time, she has launched probes, brought and settled cases, and offered the DoJ’s opinion in private litigation. But beyond her role as a law enforcer, Slater is a manifestation of the realignment of not just politics generally, but antitrust policy specifically. Her first speech in her new role was titled “The Conservative Roots of America First Antitrust Enforcement.” And in recent interviews, she has shed light on how she sees her approach to antitrust contrasting with the laissez-faire approach of the Chicago school and the aggressive posture of her predecessors in the Biden Administration.
When it comes to technology, Slater has taken a strong view that antitrust and US competitiveness are not at odds, but rather that antitrust makes the US more competitive vis-a-vis China. And just recently, she announced action the DoJ has taken at the intersection of antitrust and free speech, another key area of focus. Evan and Slater discuss what “America First Antitrust” means, how the approach is similar and different from her predecessor in the Biden Administration, and the relationship between antitrust and national security.Congress after Chevron Panel DiscussionFoundation for American Innovation2025-05-29 | The Foundation for American Innovation hosted a panel discussion and reception on Wednesday, April 9th, featuring experts on Congress and the administrative state.
The panel built upon a recent symposium published by the Foundation for American Innovation and the C. Boyden Gray Center for the Study of the Administrative State at George Mason University’s Antonin Scalia Law School. Congress after Chevron: Legislative Responses to Changing Deference Doctrines featured new papers on Congress’s post-Chevron challenges and opportunities.Antitrust and Big Tech: From Biden to Trump w/Lina KhanFoundation for American Innovation2025-04-28 | During the Biden Administration, few figures in Washington sparked so much debate and caused so much spilled ink as Lina Khan. The Wall Street Journal published over 80 editorials criticizing her approach, while politically opposed tech titans like LinkedIn's Reid Hoffman and Tesla's Elon Musk called for her firing. Meanwhile, an unlikely coalition of progressive Democrats like Elizabeth Warren and populist Republicans like JD Vance rallied behind her vision of more aggressive antitrust enforcement.
For many, her ambitious cases against Microsoft, Amazon, and Meta weren't merely legal challenges. They represented a fundamental break from the antitrust philosophy that had dominated for decades across administrations. These cases now transfer to Trump's FTC, creating a test of regulatory continuity at a time when Big Tech CEOs are looking to curry favor with the White House.
In this conversation, Khan reflects on her legacy, discusses what critics may have misunderstood about her approach, and explores how the movement she catalyzed might evolve.Session I | The New Politics of CryptoFoundation for American Innovation2025-02-21 | REBOOT 2024: The New Politics of Crypto

A bold statement of principles arguing for the liberatory potential of technology, his manifesto generated criticism from both the left and right—including FAI’s own Sam Hammond.
In this special edition of The Dynamist, FAI Senior Fellow Jon Askonas and Marc Andreessen hash out the foundations of the Techno-Optimist politics of tomorrow. Marc is a cofounder and general partner at the venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz. He has achieved two rare feats in the tech industry: pioneering a software category used by more than a billion people, and establishing multiple billion-dollar companies.
But operationalizing the abstract concept of privacy, already difficult for centralized systems, becomes even more complex for decentralized networks. As builders innovate in this space and policymakers grapple with the implications of these technologies, we must think through privacy's evolving relationship with security and digital ownership.
What does privacy mean on the decentralized web? What lessons can we learn from Big Tech’s privacy failures, and how should we apply them to the decentralized web? How should we balance the potentially conflicting desires to enhance both national security and individual privacy?

With this shift, we face a multitude of potential intrusions into our private lives, including the risk of new forms of surveillance and censorship.
These platforms are increasingly held responsible—by politicians, the media, and even their own employees—for allowing and amplifying harmful actions their users. This includes the spread false information, violent extremism, targeted harassment, and other societal harms. This has led to a rise in moderation, narrowing the scope of acceptable speech and behavior.
Would Elon Musk’s vision have been better, or was it unworkable? Regardless of who’s in charge, are central authorities the right governance approach, or would these challenges be better handled by distributed communities? Will the future continue the trend of tech concentration, or will the pendulum swing back—potentially with the help of regulators—from the cathedral of Big Tech to the bazaar of the open web?
The panel explored these issues and more, covering the balance and the boundaries of free speech and the future of online platforms.

After World War I, Congress sought to control growing government expenditures and debt and created GAO to assess the legality and adequacy of government expenditures. Today, GAO provides critical support to Congress through its audits, legal opinions, and analyses that span the breadth of the government’s myriad activities. This program looks back at the institutional development of GAO over the past century, and looks forward at the role the “government watchdog” will play in its next 100 years.

As we welcome the 117th Congress into session, they have a lot on their plate, including U.S. semiconductor policy. Five years ago, the People’s Republic of China (PRC) announced a decade-long campaign dubbed “Made in 2025,” designed to secure for itself global dominance in ten key economic and national security sectors, including the crucial semiconductor industry, where an investment of more than $150 billion is underway.
American policymakers have long recognized the importance of semiconductors for U.S. economic and national security. The U.S. semiconductor sector was created with the support of government investment and has been protected by industrial policy over the past 70 years. Today, a bipartisan consensus among national policymakers has embraced a new national semiconductor industrial policy to counter the Chinese challenge. Recent policy measures include increasing federal R&D support and initiating new trade controls and other actions to prevent technology transfer to China.
With a national policy for the semiconductor industry soon to become the responsibility of a new administration, Lincoln Network will host a virtual panel with technology and national security experts to examine recent policy developments and offer recommendations for 2021 and beyond.#Reboot2020 | The New CreatorsFoundation for American Innovation2021-01-08 | Featuring:
