Sophie Darlington left Ireland at age 19 and moved to Tanzania to chase her dream of wildlife filmmaking. That was 30 years ago, and now, she is one of a handful of female filmmakers working in the wild. Today, she is a BAFTA Award winner who has held the door open for other women to follow in her footsteps.
Darlington is known for her ability to capture exceptionally emotional behavioral content with a strong focus on nature’s beauty. She is one of the directors of photography on National Geographic’s 2024 series “Queens,” focusing on female leadership in nature. Her impressive list of credits includes feature films for Disney Nature and BBC Earth, as well as landmark bluechip series for Netflix, National Geographic and BBC, including “Dynasties I,” “Dynasties II,” “Our Planet I,” “Our Planet II,” “The Hunt,” “Planet Earth II” and “Life Story,” all narrated by the legendary Sir David Attenborough. Darlington was part of the core team that won the BAFTA for Cinematography in 2016 for “The Hunt” (BBC) and was accepted as a BAFTA member in 2018.
Growing up in the U.K., Ireland and Iran, Darlington traveled to East Africa in her early 20s, where she met eight-time Emmy® winner and cinematographer Hugo van Lawick. Van Lawick, renowned for his long-term partnership with National Geographic and Jane Goodall, took Darlington on as a filming apprentice in the 1990s, and she spent several years learning the craft of natural history filmmaking out on the Serengeti Plains. Darlington carries on Hugo’s legacy today. In addition to filming, she is actively and passionately involved in mentoring, public speaking and increasing diversity in wildlife filmmaking.

More about #VRAPTORX GLOBAL VISION RED Global Vision uses the global shutter sensor in V-RAPTOR [X] and V-RAPTOR XL [X] to open unprecedented capabilities. Global Vision’s Extended Highlights mode allows the camera to see color and detail into extreme highlights like never before, providing even softer and more subtle highlight roll-off when in uncontrollable environments, and an overall dynamic range of over 20 stops. Phantom Track dual-capture streamlines any virtual production environment employing GhostFrameTM or frame-remapping, capturing distinct R3D clips per LED wall view, as well as allowing for monitoring of either view live on-set over each SDI.
THE NEW DSMC3 FLAGSHIP SYSTEMS The V-RAPTOR [X] compact body is built with the keystone features found in the original V-RAPTOR platform, now bolstered by newly engineered in-camera audio pre-amps and an optimized sensor cavity for improved contrast. The V-RAPTOR [X] has 2x 12G SDI’s, capable of unique monitoring views, a locking Canon RF style lens mount for rigid and flexible lens selection, and CFexpress Type B media for up to 800MB/s formats such as 8K at 120fps.
The V-RAPTOR XL [X] is designed to support high-end television and motion picture productions, as well as storytellers requiring an elite all-in-one solution. It features dual-voltage battery support compatible with a wide range of common batteries found on set today, including both 14 V batteries and high-voltage 26 V V-Lock or Gold Mount options. A premier feature remains the built-in electronic ND which allows cinematographers to precisely select their density in 1/4, 1/3, and full-stop increments, providing unrivaled control of exposure and depth of field.
The [X] sensor capabilities reach the exceptional frame-rate performance levels of the V-RAPTOR line even with its global shutter readout. Capturing 8K full sensor at up to 120 frames per second (150fps at 2.4:1), 6K up to 160 fps (200fps at 2.4:1), and 2K (2.4:1) at an incredible 600 frames per seconds. As with the other cameras in RED’s ecosystem, it harnesses RED’s proprietary REDCODE RAW codec, allowing users to capture 16-bit RAW and leveraging RED’s latest IPP2 workflow and color management tools.

Productions with high stakes and limited takes. But getting to film the Red Bull Airforce literally wingsuit and skysurf out of military aircraft was insane. It was incredibly exciting, but it also came with a number of creative and technical considerations. There were a number of shots we’d only get one chance at. The jump window was short and defined, offering no time to dial in exposure settings beforehand. I needed the camera build to be tight and handheld- but also cover both horizontal and vertical framing, capture slow-motion, and have as much latitude as possible for when the plane door opened. I immediately reached for V-RAPTOR. It really has it all." - AJ Bleyer, DGA (@adventfilms )
► The Concept: Oracle Red Bull Racing’s online Paddock gives race fans access to exclusive prizes. To show just how easy it is to join, Red Bull partnered with Director AJ Bleyer, DGA to film the sign-up process in the most “Red Bull” way possible- while literally jumping out of a plane.
► Making of: We started in California, at Lake Elsinore, all signing our waivers upon arrival. We then began training and rehearsing in a 1:1 scale wooden mock-up of the aircraft- a SC.7 Skyvan loaned to us by the US Marine Corps (which was insanely cool). In the air, a red light flicked on as the metal tailgate opened mid-flight. The wind kicked up all around us and it quickly dawned on everyone what a wild experience this all was. Shooting in that environment would be a struggle for nearly any camera, as you’re forced to make split-second exposure decisions between the dark plane interior or the bright world below. But with RED’s electronic ND, I was able to expose perfectly, even making precise 1/4 stop adjustments with the click of a button. No delicate glass, no smudges, but most importantly the confidence of knowing I could nail the shots I had only one chance at without exposing to be “safe.” When we wrapped with Sean MacCormac’s skysurfing, we immediately drove to LAX and flew to Seattle to do it all over again the very next day with Andy Farrington and his wingsuit.

"We bought our first RED camera ten years ago. It was a SCARLET and we were working on a surf edit called DONE. Looking back now it's pretty cool to think how that decision and then meeting everyone at RED over the years helped shape all of our film projects moving forward. We're fortunate to have the chance to visit these amazing places around the world, and meet so many incredible people -- it's always been a fun challenge to try and capture those experiences and bring them to life in the best way possible. These cameras were a big part of keeping us inspired to do that. For what we do, spending a lot of the year on the road, and the way Erik shoots in general, whether it's a long session on the beach, or shooting from the water, there just isn't a better option. Here's a look at some of our favorite clips and moments from the past decade. Thank you to every cinematographer who has supported over the years!"

Ultimately, Barry's only hope is to race for his life to save the world he is in and return to the future that he knows. But will making the ultimate sacrifice enough to reset the universe?

Greg has been nominated for two Academy Awards for Best Documentary for 'The Living Sea' and 'Dolphins.' He developed three cameras for the IMAX format- the high-speed (slow motion) camera, the industry’s first lightweight camera, and the “all-weather” camera used during the much-celebrated feature 'Everest.'
Greg founded MacGillivray Freeman Films in the 1960s in Laguna Beach, CA, with his best friend Jim Freeman. Together they produced several documentaries about surfing and skateboarding- pioneering a cinematic perspective for the genre by putting the viewer in the middle of the action via board-mounted cameras.
Greg has produced and directed over fifty films, over 35 of which are IMAX. He shares with RED his lifelong passion for filmmaking, moving from film to digital, and the profound challenges of maintaining a business for decades, even when tragedy strikes.

Well, it's pretty logical. It's a camera that's got so much color, depth, and incredible dynamic range that it can't be ignored. And a ton of resolution. And shoots RAW that you can edit and grade in real-time. And not forgetting it's got great frame rates, upwards of 400 fps at different crops. And the added bonus is the new V-RAPTOR sensor has another two stops in the blacks and another stop in the highlights to play with. RED's 8K RAW file, gives me far more creative options on set and in post, and it's the single one reason why I shoot RED.” -Mark Toia, Director/Cinematographer
