This was a week of deliveries; we received our tiles, toilet, bidet, water heater, kitchen gas stove and so much more. The crew also started tiling the bathroom, laundry room and kitchen. Plus, the plaster was applied to the walls, which has made the house look a lot more livable. So, there's been a lot going on! We also found time to go on a hike with our neighbour, collect some kindling for our wood burning stove (it's starting to cool down around here!), and take part in a community seed drive for people looking to start their own vegetable gardens. Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2024-03-16 | Today you’re in for an adventure because we’re travelling the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route across the Japanese Alps! I can't think of a better way to experience autumn in Japan, because the fall foliage was simply magical!Nicknamed the ‘Roof of Japan’, this journey can be done starting in Toyama or Nagano and it involves a 2,400-metre elevation change across the Japanese Alps using multiple modes of transportation. This includes trains, buses, ropeways, cable cars and even your own two feet. We departed from Dentetsu-Toyama Station and travelled to Tateyama Station. This first leg of the journey was all about getting out of the city. Tateyama Cable Car - 7 minutesNext, we rode the Tateyama Cable Car from Tateyama Station to Bijodaira. This was a 7-minute ride. The cable car climbs 502 meters and covers a distance of 1.3 kilometres. Tateyama Highland Bus - 50 minutes The Tateyama Highland Bus was our next mode of transportation on the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. We took the express bus, which was a 50-minute journey from Bijodaira to Mudoro. The Tateyama Highland Bus covers a distance of 23 kilometres and you experience an almost 1500-meter altitude change. We went from green landscapes to fall foliage to a snowy landscape. It was quite the journey and yes, it was a very windy road. Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus - 10 minutesThen, we got on the Tateyama Tunnel Trolley Bus which runs from Murodo to Daikanbo. This is a 10-minute bus ride through a narrow tunnel that crosses Mount Tateyama. This green bus is powered by electricity, so it doesn’t produce any exhaust fumes. We travelled 3.7 kilometres with an elevation gain of 134 metres. Tateyama Ropeway - 7 minutesThe Tateyama Ropeway covers a distance of 1,700 metres without the use of a single pylon along the way (those are the columns you typically see when you’re riding a cable car, chair lift or gondola.) This is the only such cable car in Japan, which makes it pretty unique. The journey takes you from Daikanbo to Kurobedaira, it’s a 7-minute trip and the elevation change is 488 metres. Kurobe Cable Car - 5 minutesThen it was time to ride the Kurobe Cable Car from Kurobedaira to Kurobeko. What’s unique about this mode of transportation is that it’s the only underground cable car in Japan, meaning it is unaffected by the heavy snowfall in this region. This was the shortest journey so far. We travelled 0.8 kilometres, had an elevation change of 373 metres, and the ride only took 5 minutes. Cross Kurobe Dam on foot - 15 minutesThe Kurobe Dam is an 186-metre arched dam and the tallest dam in all of Japan. It was built between 1956 and 1963. We noticed there was an option to go on a sightseeing boat ride on Kurobe Lake, however, we skipped it because we still had a bit of a journey ahead of us and we wanted to make it to Nagano City before dark. Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus - 16 minutesThis brings us to our next mode of transportation: riding the Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus from Kurobe Dam to Ogizawa Station. This was a 16-minute journey where we travelled 6.1 kilometres with an elevation change of 37 metres. Local Bus to Shinano - 40 minutesOnce we arrived at Shinano, we picked up the luggage we had forwarded. Truthfully, we thought we'd be a lot further with this renovation. In fact, we thought we'd already be moved it! However, if there's one thing we've learned over the past couple of months, it's that renovations always take longer than expected, there are bound to be a few surprises along the way, and you just have to adapt and go with the flow. Considering we had zero construction experience, I'm quite impressed with how much we managed to accomplish. Overseeing crews, delegating tasks, problem-solving and making decisions on a dime is pretty tiring work...and I think it shows on our faces!So we're heading back to Canada for a little bit (this was always part of the plan!) to recharge, refresh and enjoy some quality time with family. HOTEL + HOUSE Renovation Updates 👷🛠️ | International Property Renovation in Argentina Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-08-27 | Today's video is a bit of a progress report of the home renovation and hotel renovation in Argentina. One of the big dilemmas of renovating such a big property with so many different constructions is figuring out what to prioritize. We decided to primarily focus on the smallest and oldest house so that we have a place to live as we continue this project. However, we've also had to prioritize some work on the hotel before things fall into further disrepair; this included cleaning the vegetation off the terracotta tiles on the hotel roof, cleaning the gutters and drainage system, and treating the wooden railings which were in really rough shape. We'll give you a progress report on the electrical work in the chalet and some problems we encountered along the way, show you the boxes of books and antiques we still need to sort through, share how the newly refinished railings and wooden doors turned out, and a bit more. These are just a few of the things we've been working on, so it's a random collection of clips from all over the place. Clearing the RUBBLE & What We Found in the House 🏚️🕸️ | Home Renovation in Argentina Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-08-20 | Good morning and happy weekend, everyone! In today's video, we share a little glimpse of what we got up to this week, mostly trying to rescue the old wooden floors and clear the rubble in front of the house.The construction site has been looking pretty messy lately and there are lots of building materials that we are hoping to reuse in a different capacity, so we had to start sorting things. A lot of the old wood in the house (floors, roof beams, baseboards, etc) is made from exotic wood that is no longer commercialized so we didn't want anything to go to waste. Hence, why we were digging through the rubble.Eventually, we do need to get a dump truck to come over and take away this mess, though that's going to involve loading a wheelbarrow and pushing uphill since we can't actually get a vehicle down in this area. But that shall be an adventure for another day. We'll also share some things we found in the home, which held memories for my dad from his childhood. Construction Site BBQ 👷 & What Were Working On 🚧 | Renovating a Hotel in Argentina Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-08-13 | A look at our work week in Argentina and what jobs we've been tackling around the hotel.First things first, we had a small BBQ on the construction site because we found the old family grill, which meant a lot to my dad, so we had to cook some meat on it like any good Argentine would! We ended up inviting the workers to come and share a meal with us. Then, we started tackling some other urgent tasks like cleaning out the gutters and the underground drainage system for the rainwater. Everything had gotten blocked up with the passing of time and every time it rained we would have a flood in the hotel lobby, so that needed to be addressed. We also hired a crew that cleaned the hotel roof for us because we had all sorts of flowers, ferns and even trees growing in between the terracotta tiles. Once that was done, we needed to clean the back access to the hotel which involved shovelling a thick carpet of dirt and debris. a Chaotic Week Back at Work 🤠💪 | Renovating a Property in Argentina Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-07-31 | It was our first week back at work since my Dad arrived in Argentina and we were ready to hit the ground running!My dad brought a suitcase full of tools from Canada because the plan was to get the house painted, but as usual, things are running a bit behind schedule. So, we may not have gotten around to painting, but there was plenty of work to be done all around us. The main focus this week was completing the controlled burns with the fire department in order to clear the brush we had cut. This was a whole process - we had to apply for a permit from the province, hire firefighters, monitor the weather closely, and get the job done before burn season ended. We had 3 back to back days of burns that ran well into the night, and of course, it's tradition to share a BBQ with the firefighters at the end of the work day, so the whole process was actually a lot of fun. Northern PATAGONIA is PARADISE! 😍✨ | Horse Trek & Boat Tour in Lago Puelo + El Bolson Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-07-15 | Northern Patagonia truly is a slice of paradise! Emerald rivers, misty forests, snow-capped mountains - this place is a feast for the eyes. We spent a few days enjoying some of the top attractions in Lago Puelo and neighbouring El Bolson, and that means lots of time in nature!In this video, we'll take you on an epic horse trek to Cajón del Azul. This is a trek that begins in the outskirts of El Bolsón and it involves crossing multiple rivers and riding up into the mountains. We saw rivers in shades of turquoise and emerald that were incredible! We were there in the rainy season, but you can imagine what this place is like in the summertime. Then, in Lago Puelo we went on a boat tour to explore the national park. We hiked to the border with Chile, drank water that flows down from a glacier, saw the rapids, and just had a wonderful time. Another highlight in Lago Puelo was the hanging bridge (Pasarela Río Azul) which leads to waterfalls tucked away in the forest. AUTUMN in PATAGONIA 🍂🥰🍁 | Hiking and Horse Trekking in Bariloche, Argentina Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-05-06 | Autumn in Patagonia is a magical time of year and we arrived in mid-April just in time to enjoy all the fall foliage!In this video we'll show you how we spent our first few days in Bariloche. This time around, we opted to stay in the outskirts of the city at Estancia del Carmen which overlooks Lake Gutierrez. It was a beautiful spot and we were surrounded by nature. Since we were so close to the lake, we opted to do a horse trek around Lake Gutierrez, which was a lot of fun. We got to trek through forests, open plains surrounded by mountains, and along the lake's crystal clear shores. We also hiked up to Laguna Verde via the Neumeyer Mountain Refuge. That was a breathtaking hike and the red autumn colours really made the green lagoon pop! Autumn is a great time of year to do this hike. And for anyone interested in doing these excursions, we booked them through Vivencias Travel once we arrived in Bariloche. Can you believe it? Time has really flown by; we arrived in late spring and we're already starting to see the autumn colours appear around the garden. Are we where we thought we would be 5 months in? No, not quite. But that being said, a lot has been accomplished and we choose to celebrate those little milestones. Renovating a house has turned out to be a full-time job. Being on-site, managing crews, taking phone calls as problems arise, making decisions on the spot, going into town to buy materials, dealing with delays, managing payments... It's quite involved and sometimes it can feel like that's taking over your life.Renovation burnout is real, so we're taking a break. We've been going at it for 5 months straight and we can feel we need to hit the pause button and recoup our energy. So, we have booked a trip to our favourite place on Earth: Patagonia. We're so looking forward to mountains, trekking, and quality time with friends. Help from the FIRE Department 😬🔥 | Renovating a Property in Rural Argentina Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-04-02 | Normally you'd call the fire department to put out fires, but this week we called them over to do the opposite...This has been an interesting week of hanging out with our local volunteer firefighters, doing controlled burns on the property, and even barbecuing together.We never intended to do a controlled burn, but after our landscapes disappeared unexpectedly leaving us with a big mess of chopped bushes, shrubbery and small trees, we needed a way to clear the land. We considered getting a truck to haul everything away, trying to get a wood chipper into this part of the lot, but ultimately, a burn was the best option given the terrain. GRAPE HARVEST & Traditional Argentine BBQ with Local Winemakers in Villa Yacanto, Argentina! 🍇🍷 Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-03-13 | It's wine grape harvest time in Argentina and we were fortunate enough to be invited to a local vineyard and winery to take part in the festivities!If you've been watching this channel for a while, you already know we're wine lovers and can't resist the opportunity to try new wines. This time around we visited a winery called Juana Urbana located on the outskirts of Villa Yacanto in the Province of Cordoba. This is a historic property with Jesuit ruins and old ranches that date back to the 1800s. We spent the morning grape picking and learning how wine is made in this small boutique winery. We then enjoyed a traditional Argentine BBQ for lunch featuring choripán (chorizo on a bun) and various cuts of meat. Of course, we also sampled their wines! This winery specializes in young wines and we got to try a nice Malbec and Cabernet Franc blend.That evening we stayed at the neighbouring cottages, Cabañas Valle Mágico, which are just down the road from the winery. We met the lovely couple who runs this place through YouTube! The following day, we returned to Juana Urbana to have lunch at their restaurant. We joined their winery tour, learned a bit more about their history, and then enjoyed a 3-course meal. It was a really fun weekend. Were GUTTING the Entire HOUSE! 🏚️🫠 | Argentina House Renovation Update Samuel and Audrey - Travel and Food Videos 2023-01-29 | That's right, we're gutting the whole house! There were a lot of things we would have liked to keep intact in this Argentina home renovation, but at the end of the day we had to ask ourselves, would we rather resolve these problems now or have to deal with them a few months or years down the line? I think our future selves would appreciate it if we didn't procrastinate and just did what needs to be done NOW! So, all this to say, that we have a bit more work on our hands than we expected and that means this renovation is going to take a bit longer, but the end result will be worth it. A few things on our to-do list: deal with the humidity problem on the walls, install central heating radiators, remove the lead pipes in the bathroom and kitchen and remodel both spaces while we're at it, install new flooring in the whole house, and more. We're still hopeful this house renovation can all be done by the end of March, but we shall see! We Have a HOUSE Without a ROOF! 🏚️🤪 | Our FIRST Home Renovation Begins in Argentina! This was much needed as we had A LOT of water coming in in multiple areas of the house. We're redoing both the roof and the ceiling and have opted for a wood ceiling (exposed beams and tongue and groove style in pine) with a metal roof. This home renovation is also giving us the chance to add roof insulation which is something that this house did not have - and let me tell you, it is needed because it can get cold up in the Sierras!
