Z33 presents: Mae-ling Lokko in Grounds for Return | 26.09.21 - 09.01.22 Z33be 2021-12-14 | The work of the Ghanaian-Filipina architectural scientist and researcher Mae-ling Lokko focuses on the reuse of agricultural waste and biomaterials. Grounds for Return brings together her exploration of sustainable and just production chains, with a selection of older and new projects. To return value to the earth, she investigates alternative forms of building and living together. For example, Lokko uses coconut waste and mycelium (fungal thread) to design large-scale gateways and tunnels at Z33. By using recycled natural resources from Ghana, she aims to reduce the further depletion of exhausted land. Grounds for Return consists of a series of installations created specifically for Z33, a mural designed with Nana Afua Pierre Haynes and a table installation developed during her inaugural residency with the Ghanaian artist El Anatsui in Accra and designed in collaboration with the culinary artist and chef Selassie Atadika. They address the impact of literal and figurative storms.Climate change is everywhere, yet it is largely invisible in our daily lives. It is as if we have been thrust into the eye of the storm, a threatening silence surrounded by crushing winds. This image holds true especially for the Caribbean, where hurricanes have caused great damage and revealed deep inequalities. What once seemed like a distant future for Europe is already a reality there, and recent natural disasters suggest that the future is now. How do Caribbean artists respond to these experiences? How do they take action? What is their relationship to their environment? Artist Talk: A conversation with Dries Verbruggen (Unfold) & Alexandre Humbert Z33be 2021-01-26 | Release control, give up or regain control. It is a recurring theme in the work of Unfold (Claire Warnier & Dries Verbruggen). Between craftsmanship and new technologies, this Belgian design studio explores the boundaries of what is possible. How do they deal with this during projects? Dries Verbruggen will tell you more about this during this interview.Computer code and traditional crafts are not the mother tongue of designers Claire Warnier and Dries Verbruggen. Nevertheless, they create unusual confrontations between the two, independent of prevailing norms in design practice. The untranslatable and unexpected always come to the fore. At the same time, their projects are an exploration of the digital-analog gap, with attention to technical skill, intellectual property and the uniqueness of an identical object. The exhibition a combmaker’s tale is a fine example of this. The lecture given by Dries focuses on the projects of the past ten years, the thread of which leads to a combmaker’s tale. Artist Talk: A conversation with Sam Lewitt & Felicity D. Scott Z33be 2021-01-20 | Lewitt’s current exhibition CURE (the Work) departs from the recent closure and demolition of Ford Genk, formerly a major employer in the region. In this exhibition, two portable earth ramming machines compress soil from the Ford factory site into interlocking earth blocks. These low-cost devices were originally designed for self-help housing in so-called developing countries and also embraced by practitioners of small-scale ecological self-sufficiency.As Scott explains in her book, Outlaw Territories: Environments of Insecurity/Architectures of Counter-Insurgency (Zone Books, 2016), the politics of self-help housing are highly ambiguous. While critics maintain that self-help implies an abdication of social responsibility, advocates claim that it allows the urban poor to control their own destiny. This latter group ranges from anarchist activists to laissez-faire economists, showing the convergence of different ideologies around the ideal of personal autonomy.At this event, Lewitt and Scott will discuss how self-help housing encapsulates larger social and economic contradictions. The conversation will be moderated by Tim Roerig, curator of the exhibition CURE (the Work). Z33 presents: CURE (the Work) by Sam Lewitt Z33be 2020-10-21 | The American artist Sam Lewitt investigates the circulation of matter and capital in the global economy. His exhibition at Z33 departs from the recent closure and demolition of Ford Genk, formerly a major employer in the region.As Ford Genk was undergoing demolition, the new wing of Z33 was under construction in the nearby city of Hasselt. Lewitt retools this economic transition in his exhibition. He uses elements of the demolished factory, as well as soil from the Ford site, to set up a production line for compressed earth blocks, a low-cost building material. Inside the galleries, the stages of the production process – compressing, curing, and stacking – are separated by doors and tarps from the former factory. The artistic interventions will enhance, challenge and question the architecture and what it has to offer. The inauguration of a new building is the first and only time it can be explored in all its many facets as a pure architectural object. Its walls do not yet hold a history. Expectations can therefore be very high, especially for an art space. What possibilities does it have in store for us? It is not simply a case of mere square feet. An art gallery, after all, is no warehouse. Walls, with windows and doors in them, as well as floors and ceilings, all determine how these square feet will ‘work’. They create a hierarchy that allows or hinders things, that reveals and conceals them. None of these works can come to life without the active involvement of visitors. An art space can only flourish by the grace of the commitment, the ‘performance’ of its visitors. They breathe life into it. Wing 19 - A new building by Francesca Torzo for Z33 (Hasselt, BE) Z33be 2020-05-26 | Vleugel 19 (Wing 19) is the new exhibition building for Z33 - House for Contemporary Art, Design and Architecture. This is where Italian architect Francesca Torzo puts forward fundamental ideas about the nature and positioning itself. In addition, the building responds to the existing context, with Vleugel 58 (Wing 58), the Jenever museum and the adjoining beguinage. The result is a building that challenges visitors, curators and artists. The audience is not presented with virgin white boxes, but spaces with an outspoken character, which turns the building into a gift, not only for the art that will be displayed there, but also for the visitors and the city. Currents #7: Birds of a Feather / 21.05 - 2.08.2020 at Z33, Hasselt (BE) Z33be 2020-05-26 | Birds of a Feather presents works by seven recent fine arts graduates: Israel Aten (US), Myrthe Baptist (BE), Justine Court (FR), Jonathan De Maeyer (BE), Jonas Dehnen (DE), Leroy Meyer (BE) and Naama Roth (IL). Each of them attempts to grasp a strange and confusing reality. The result is a confrontation of seven separate but harmoniously interwoven stories in a cross-over of painting, installations, sculptures, ceramics, photography, film, and graphic design.In his ‘Mal d’Archives’ (1995), the French critic and philosopher Jacques Derrida describes the archive as an entity that absorbs, protects, conceals, but also reveals the things that connect us. We alternatingly desire or fear the flood of information with which we are confronted daily. In the eye of this visual and textual storm, the physical, mental or digital archive appears to offer a moment of repose. The same goes for the artists who test their collection of images, symbols and stories against that mass culture. It is this shared exploration that connects their work. Judith Seng, Acting Things VII - School of Fluid Measures, Hasselt, 2020 Z33be 2020-03-06 | School of fluid measures. Learning should be less about knowing or memorising what something is than understanding how it continuously changes in relation to something else. At the School of Fluid Measures objects, numbers and values that have become fixed by universal standards are dissolved through scored interactions that leave traces in coloured sand. The patterns that emerge are an exploratory measure of the fluidity of meanings, and the colours represent exemplary values as resources to debate, distribute, and fuse into new colours and values. Through an embodied process that surfaces situative intentions and relations, 18 measuring sessions invite participants to negotiate new colours and values. Viewed as a series, the 18 sessions intend to explore ways of mediating, materializing and notating the making of meanings and results, in a manner that embraces the fluidity of the constant socio-material becoming. Navine G. Khan-Dossos in Dissidence - Quilting Against | 09.02 - 26.05.2019 at Z33, Hasselt (BE) Z33be 2019-03-26 | Everything started with the GTSA (Greek Transgender Support Association) in Athens. With the traditional Greek cross as a basic pattern, the women of the GTSA made a series of new designs in watercolour. Each has its own place on the quilt. The quilt was then shipped to Hasselt, where it was finished. For Navine. G. Khan-Dossos, this work symbolizes the gulf between northern and southern Europe, the two locations where the quilt was made.
