Understanding the mechanistic basis of environmental pollutant toxicity is dependent on accurately characterizing both exposure and biological responses, especially in the era of exposomics and precision environmental health. Untargeted metabolomics, an analysis of small-molecule metabolic phenotypes, may offer improved estimation of exposures and corresponding health responses to complex environmental mixtures such as air pollution and persistent organic pollutants (POPs). The field remains nascent, however, with questions concerning the coherence and generalizability of findings across studies, study designs and analytical platforms. In over ten independent panel and cross-sectional cohort studies, we demonstrated the utility of high-resolution metabolomics as a central platform linking environmental exposure to internal dose and biological response where we identified novel metabolites and metabolic pathways related to complex air pollution and POPs mixtures. Specifically, biological perturbations in oxidative stress, systemic inflammation, and DNA damage and repair related pathway and metabolites were associated with exposures to air pollution and POPs, as well as a wide range of adverse health responses, especially among vulnerable population. These results hold great promise for identifying key connections between environmental exposures and corresponding adverse health effects. Future directions should focus on validation of these findings via hypothesis-driven protocols, technical advances in metabolic annotation and quantification, and application of multi-omics integration.

Dr. Faulk's lab statement: "My research is multi-scale with studies at the molecular genetic level in multiple organisms and human populations. I use computational methods to predict changes to the epigenome caused aging, dietary interventions, and environmental toxicants. I focus on both gene promoters and repetitive elements. My research models, the mouse and human, are primarily impacted by dietary shifts in nutrient availability and quantity simultaneously with toxicant exposure. My data analysis leverages massively parallel sequencing with comparative genomics to reveal regions evolutionarily selected for environmental plasticity."

The disproportionate impacts of disasters for communities of color have been documented repeatedly for both natural and human-caused disasters. In Michigan:
More than 500,000 Michigan residents live within one mile of a facility storing large amounts of extremely hazardous chemicals. Those residents are disproportionately Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) and confront daily risks of spills, explosions, and other environmental disasters at the facilities, as well as from the transport of chemicals to and from them through their communities. Children of color are more than two times as likely as white children in Michigan to live in the shadow of facilities housing hazardous substances. This event, organized by Detroit community leaders with support from local academic institutions, will:

Dr. Soundara Viveka Thangaraj (Viveka) is a postdoctoral fellow in the lab of Dr. Vasantha Padmanabhan in the Department of Pediatric-Endocrinology at the University of Michigan. She received her PhD in Genomics and Oncology, from the University of Madras, India. Her research centers around the developmental programming effects of pre-natal exposure to environmental chemicals, on long-term metabolic health of the offspring, using omic tools. In the current research, she has utilized a translationally relevant, real-life, low-dose, chronic chemical exposure model, in which sheep are exposed to biosolids which is a source of real-life mixture of environmental chemicals.

Professor Corwin (Cory) Zigler joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin in 2018. He has joint appointments in the Department of Statistics and Data Sciences and the Department of Women’s Health at Dell Medical School. Before that, he was a faculty member in the Department of Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He currently serves as associate editor for the journals Biometrics and Biostatistics, and is heavily involved through elected positions in the Health Policy Statistics Section of the American Statistical Association. He has received many outstanding career awards including the 2010 Carolbeth Korn Prize from the UCLA School of Public Health, a 2012 Young Investigator Award from the Statistics in Epidemiology Section of the American Statistical Association, and the 2019 Rothman Prize for the best paper published in Epidemiology. Dr. Zigler's research is motivated by problems in public health and epidemiology. His specific research areas include developing statistical methods for causal inference with interference, intermediate variables (mediation analysis, principal stratification), confounding in high dimensions, model uncertainty/model averaging, treatment effect heterogeneity, spatial statistics, missing data, environmental health data science, and tools for transparent/reproducible research.
Rod Little is a Fellow of the American Statistical Association and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and a member of the National Academy of Medicine. He chaired the Biostatistics Department from 2007 to 2009, and from 1993 to 2001. He also served as the Vice President of the American Statistical Association from 2010 to 2012. Professor Little has over 250 refereed publications, notably on methods for the analysis of data with missing values and model-based survey inference, and the application of statistics to diverse scientific areas, including medicine, demography, economics, psychiatry, aging, and the environment.
Sara Adar is an Associate Professor of Epidemiology at the UM. She is also the Associate Chair in the Department. Dr. Adar started her career with an environmental engineering degree from MIT and then moved into Public Health, earning a masters from Johns Hopkins School of Public Health and a doctorate from the Harvard School of Public Health. Her research focuses on the human health effects of air pollution, with a growing interest in identifying intervention strategies reduce exposures and improve health. Dr. Adar has served as an expert panelist for the Environmental Protection Agency and World Health Organization, including participation in the development of the National Ambient Air Quality Standards for particulate matter and sulfur oxides.
Dr. Tim Dvonch is Associate Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at the UM School of Public Health. He is also the associate chair in the department. He holds a BS in Chemistry, as well as MS and PhD degrees in Environmental Health Sciences from the UM, where he also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Environmental Science, Engineering, and Technology. Dr. Dvonch’s research includes exposure assessment and health effects of air pollution, with a focus on chemical composition of particulates and source identification, as well as atmospheric transport and fate of toxicants including mercury and other metals across a wide array of environmental systems with the ultimate goal of informing policy and decision-marking processes.
Dr. Lu Wang received her PhD in Biostatistics from Harvard University in 2008 and joined the faculty at the UM in the same year. Her research focuses on statistical methods for evaluating dynamic treatment regimes, personalized health care, nonparametric and semiparametric regressions, missing data analysis, functional data analysis, and longitudinal (correlated/clustered) data analysis. Dr. Wang has been collaborating with investigators at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, UM Medical School, UM School of Public Health, UM School of Kinesiology, UM Institute of Social Research, and Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Wang is an Associate Editor of JASA and Biometrics. Dr. Rita Strakovsky is currently an Assistant Professor of Human Nutrition at Michigan State University, where she is additionally affiliated with the Institute for Integrative Toxicology and the Reproductive and Developmental Sciences Program. Rita obtained her Ph.D. in Nutritional Sciences and Registered Dietitian credentials from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 2011. She remained in Champaign as a NIH T32 postdoctoral fellow in Endocrine, Developmental & Reproductive Toxicology and later as an NIEHS K99/R00 grantee. While much of Rita’s earlier training was in animal models of pregnancy, she currently evaluates the impacts of various environmental and dietary exposures on the health of pregnant women and their children. Specifically, this presentation will focus on the potential of maternal diet quality to mitigate the impacts of environmental chemical exposures.
