ARTIST'S STATEMENT:
In an increasingly alienating society, where the average person feels more politically disenfranchised than ever before, it is time to reexamine the work of American comedian Gallagher and elevate his cultural contributions to the realm of high performance art. Known for his trademark “Sledge-O-Matic” routine -- in which a mock infomercial for a new kitchen tool transforms a chaotic orgy of smashed food and playful antagonizing of the audience, Gallagher embodies the “Trickster” folklore archetype with a distinctly American flavor. Among the many food items Gallagher smashes, he is historically most famous for smashing a watermelon, a fruit of comic proportions that becomes the vessel for our dashed hopes and unresolved frustrations. In a shamanic ceremony, Gallagher transfers society’s evil banality onto the watermelon, which he then smashes to provide the catharsis that we all winkingly acknowledge is not possible. The comic futility of the act is obvious, but its magick is powerful.
In my mix, I identify the “melonpill” as a state of mind where one has accepted the grossly imbalanced battle between the individual and society, yet still bravely chooses to lash out. I combine music with a “melonpill” mentality, such as “FCK 2020” by legendary German jock jam purveyors Scooter, with found footage from Gallagher TV and laserdisc specials combed from the last decades. In the final scene of the mix, I display my own ballot from the 2020 American presidential election, in which I voted for Gallagher. This vote was my tiny, futile, ultimately useless, but angry piece of personal performance art against a political system that will never represent my values. Combined with scrolling text that presents famous American quotations such as the Preamble to the United States Constitution paired with music by Euro pop group Banaroo singing romantically about the American promise, the contrast between anger and optimism is meant to awaken dormant American pride in the viewer like tapping on a poisonous snake’s glass enclosure.
“toward a melonpilled future” pairs the silly, naive directness of happy hardcore and bubblegum music with the unbridled movement of Gallagher’s “Sledge-O-Matic” routine. In the process, it claims that Gallagher is a living American myth in the tradition of Daniel Boone or Molly Pitcher, and he should be recognized as such.
