Today we explore the fascinating history of horse-drawn transportation regulations from ancient to modern times. From the Roman Empire's traffic laws under Julius Caesar to Medieval Europe's early speed limits and the regulatory practices brought to New Amsterdam by Dutch colonists. We make a special visit to early New York and its unique carting licenses (and accompanying racial discrimination), as well as the rise and fall of teamster corporations and their influence on deregulation. There's a bit of a happy end to it all too, with the efforts of the animal welfare movement, particularly the SPCA's role in regulating horse work and rescuing disabled horses. And, of course, as we all know, the advent of automobiles put an end to the widespread use of horses in transportation.

Today we explore the fascinating history of animal domestication and why beavers, despite their unique and valuable traits, were never domesticated. From their industrious nature in building dams and lodges to the exceptional properties of their fur, beavers have always been remarkable creatures. They were a key part of the medieval economy via the beaver fur trade and were hunted to near extinction in Europe and Asia. The demand for beaver pelts influenced the invention of new felting techniques and even led to the phrase "mad as a hatter." It's a story with a somewhat happy end, as today beaver conservation efforts have allowed beavers to reclaim some of their native habitats (yay beavers!).

Britain and the US were allied to the Soviet Union during the Second World War, but relations quickly turned cold after its conclusion. In fact, the Western Allies made several secret plans on how to deal with the USSR preemptively if they were to threaten us - by nuking them back to the Stone Age! As we all know, America had a monopoly on nuclear weapons for more than 4 years. So, why didn't the US obliterate its rival before the Russians got their own nukes, plunging us into the decades-long nuclear paranoia of the Cold War?

Join us as we explore the dramatic and haunting history of the Kamikaze pilots in this gripping episode of SideQuest, diving into the tragic but profound narrative of these Japanese aviators and examining the cultural and historical factors that led to their ultimate sacrifice.
The story unfolds against the backdrop of Japan's intense dedication to its warrior culture, rooted in the samurai's ethos of Bushido, a moral code emphasizing courage and self-sacrifice. As Japan modernized and sought to rival Western powers, this ethos was reshaped to promote unwavering loyalty to the Emperor. This fervent allegiance fueled Japan's military might, leading to triumphs in conflicts but ultimately driving the nation towards a fateful confrontation with the United States during World War II.
One haunting, yet beautiful remnant of the kamikaze program is the collection of death poems many pilots left behind. You can read excerpts here: https://scholarship.rollins.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1154&context=specs
