Raimundo Ladrón de Guevara
Jenny vs. Pre-School Kids [80s Remix] | MLaaTR Soundtrack: Revisited & Extended
updated
Here's my attempt to replicate the essence of that mix which I personally like. Using as always samples from Fairlight CMI IIx factory library, LinnDrum drum machine, Waldorf PPG Wave and misc sounds extracted from other sources and previously available remixes.
#ArtOfNoise #MomentsInLove #InstrumentalRecreation
As usual, some of Fairlight CMI Series III factory samples were used for drums section (kick, cymbals, toms and hi-hats), also Adrien Cook's Fairlight CMI IIx disks (snare, FM-synth bass, scratch and vocal stab).
The strings ("Marcato" and "Arco"), french horn and timpani comes from Emulator II and "Sync Sweep" synth was recorded using Roland Cloud JX-3P plugin.

I've been working on this project since last January. It brings a complex and groovy patterns from Roland TR-808 drum machine (including almost all sounds), I used two instances of Roland Cloud plugin version to record them. It also includes just a Fairlight CMI IIx voice file (OOHHI.VC) as a rhythm choir stab, PPG Wave (using Waldorf's emulation plugin) synth choir/pad and many of classic E-Mu Systems Emulator II factory samples ("Beet It", "De Martelet", "Pompous Choir" and "Grand Piano") and the laughs come from OMI: Universe of Sounds library.

Elements:
- Drums, drone bass and rhythm sequence from original multitrack.
- Alan Wilder and Martin Gore tour banks from E-Mu Systems Emax.
- Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana" (I. Primo vere (In Springtime)) - Ecce gratum. Recorded by Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Southend Boys' Choir. Brighton Festival Chorus, February 1st, 1976. (Orchestra choirs and strings).
PreSonus Studio One 4, Arturia Chorus JUN-6, Native Instruments Kontakt and iZotope Neoverb/Ozone 9 Elements were used on this project.

This instrumental recreation was done with Depeche's original samples recorded during February-July '87 album sessions and E-mu Systems Emulator II factory library, Dave Bascombe's library. Also Alan Wilder's Emax II disk and samples were used as well.
PreSonus Studio One 4, Native Instruments Kontakt and iZotope Neoverb/Ozone 9 Elements were used on this project.

Weeks ago I watched again Analogue Solutions' interpretation of "Opportunities" when Pet Shop Boys performed for the first time on TV, precisely on "The Old Grey Whistle Test" BBC2 show in April 29th, 1986. Done with the same hardware equipment... Insane!
If you haven't seen that cover, here it is and give them love!
youtu.be/vSNe3C9n23o
Inspired on the original performance by Pet Shop Boys and Analogue Solutions' homage, I decided to make my own interpretation, or rather recreation for that single.
Luckily I came across with few videos with original and authentic Fairlight CMI Series IIx .RS (rhythm sequences from Page R) files that Blue Weaver programmed for Whistle Test show, based on original J.J. Jeczalik (Art of Noise) and Nicholas Froome production. Which allowed me to see in detail those samples and thus be able to identify them based on my Fairlight library samples collection.
Aside, after years searching I found the famous and distinctive metallic percussive sample present in "Opportunities" and "Paninaro" ("Suburbia" B-side) as well, called as "BLIP" on first Opportunities' Fairlight sequence. I guess it came from J.J. Jeczalik's Fairlight library.
Originally on Whistle Test performance you can see the following gear:
- Fairlight CMI Series IIx (two of them, synchronized through Friend-Chip SRC).
- E-mu Systems Emulator II and Yamaha DX7 (Neil's side).
- Technics PX1 and Yamaha DX1 (Chris' side).
I could appreciate some sound presets/banks for those synths, such as "Marcato Strings" (Emulator II), some kind of massive brass (Yamaha DX1) and glockenspiel modified sound (Yamaha DX7).
Thankfully the realization of this instrumental recreation was able thanks to the following plug-ins:
- Arturia Emulator II V
- Arturia DX7 V
- Martin Lüders PG-8X
- UVI DS77 (Digital Synsations collection)
Mixing and mastering was done with:
- PreSonus Studio One 4
- iZotope Ozone 9 Elements.

Released as a 7'' and 12'' single in September 1986, "Suburbia" was the last single from "Please" album. Written by Neil Tennant & Chris Lowe.
Finally I was able to do a proper instrumental recreation with a lot of Fairlight CMI Series III and Emulator II factory library banks.
All synth brass/pads was made with PG-8X (Roland JX-8P plugin emulation).
Mixing and main DAW: PreSonus Studio One 4.
Mastering: iZotope Ozone 9 Elements.

Some Chilean music does not hurt to make a cover or rather, an instrumental recreation and this time it's the turn of Los Prisioneros with one of their tracks present on their second LP "Pateando Piedras" released in September 1986, called "Por Favor".
On that record, the San Miguel trio after the success of their debut LP "La Voz de los 80's" (1984) with the raw sound inspired by punk rock, they experimented with a more electronic sound, derived from synth-pop. With synthesizers, samplers and drum machines on board. Equipment such as Casio CZ-101, CZ-1000 and CZ-5000 keyboards; E-Mu Systems Emulator II/Emax, Simmons electronic drums and drum machines such as Yamaha RX7 and the iconic LinnDrum LM-2 were key in the development of "Pateando Piedras".

I used some Fairlight CMI IIx/III Series factory samples, along with Frankie Goes To Hollywood's "Welcome To The Pleasuredome" percussion/vocal sounds, Asia's "Heat of The Moment" guitar riff and J.J. Jeczalik's CD "Art of Sampling" samples sources (e.g.: bass vocal, kick/snare vocal & Chic's "Le Freak" intro).
Other VST/plug-in instruments used:
UVI Model D - Grand piano
Arturia Jup-8 V4 - Synth lead/pad
Arturia Mini V3 - Bass synth
Arturia Modular V3 - Synth percussion
Whole drum track was taken from an outtake named as "Panic" (original "Backbeat" session name) featured on 2017 "In Visible Silence" double-CD Deluxe Edition.
Mixing and mastering was done on PreSonus Studio One 4.
As fun fact, the final track on same record it's called "Beatback", which basically it's the last minute and half of "Backbeat".

I've isolated most of samples though Adobe Audition and all of them were processed on Arturia CMI V (Fairlight CMI IIx).
Some samples came from Fairlight's factory library. Intro/outro and some Anne Dudley's spoken words samples are taken from original one.
This instrumental recreation was done through PreSonus Studio One.

"Beat Box" was featured before on "Into Battle" EP (1983) and "Who's Afraid of The Art of Noise" (1984).
Sounds from Fairlight CMI IIx sample library and AoN original sounds (isolated by Adobe Audition) were used in this cover.
To import the samples I used only Arturia CMI V. Synth sounds came from Waldorf's PPG Wave 2.2v. For sequences and mixing process I used PreSonus' Studio One 4.

Trevor's Fairlight was notably used on ABC's record "The Lexicon of Love" (1982) as well.
"Beat Box" was featured for first time on "Into Battle with the Art of Noise" EP (1983), released through Horn's label ZTT. This track was remixed, extended and released again on debut '84 album "Who's Afraid of The Art of Noise".
It took me about three months to find the samples (between AoN sounds, the Fairlight IIx library and WhoSampled webpage), program the sequences and achieve the same sound in the original. To import the samples I used only Arturia CMI V. For sequences and mixing process I used PreSonus' Studio One 4.
I thank SynaMax who provided me with some samples that I needed to complete this project.

The V-Collection 8 was released some few days ago and new virtual toys is included... Jun-6 V (Roland Juno 6), Vocoder V (Moog 16-Channel Vocoder) and the classic and iconic Emulator II V (E-mu Systems Emulator II).
This last was used by many musicians/bands in the 80's, like Stevie Wonder, Tears For Fears, Peter Gabriel, Pet Shop Boys, Genesis, Herbie Hancock, New Order, Orchestral Manoeuvres In The Dark, Mr. Mister, Enigma, Front 242, Depeche Mode, and many others.
Alan Wilder is the most reference in terms of manipulation and programming of samples in the Emulator II, an instrument that Depeche Mode acquired from their fourth album Some Great Reward (1984).
Here's a demo of this VST with a preset loaded with original Alan's Emulator II "Christmas Island" samples, replicating the location of each sound on the instrument and programming the sequence (through a MIDI file in Avid ProTools, recreated by me).
The original demo sequence was done in 1985, during Black Celebration session recording.
No EQ or any FX additional was included in the final mix. Just only a little of reverb on the Emulator II V.

In 1979 with the release of his album "Looking For Saint Tropez" his iconic song "Moskow Diskow" appeared, which became an international hit.
On this occasion, I had the honor and pleasure of working together with RJ8 from Buenos Aires, Argentina, who has been covering various interpreters from the '80s for a long time on their YouTube channel. He currently performs liveshows on both YouTube and Twitch.

Their second album "A Broken Frame" attracted both some lucky happenings and commercial failures. However, during the tour to promote this album, Depeche Mode, converted as a quartet, showed potential with their rhythms and sounds behind the synthesizers.
In this cover I wanted to replicate with the same structure the intro "Oberkorn" (released as side B on the single "The Meaning of Love"), plus "My Secret Garden" (second track from "A Broken Frame"), keeping the sounds they used both in tour as in studio. Especially in the recorded concert held at the Hammersmith Odeon, London on October 25th, 1982.
