Delta updates: making updates leaner Siemens Knowledge Hub 2024-06-19 | On embedded devices, the a/b rootfs partitioning scheme is common, which generally uses two full-blown versions of the rootfs on the storage. On update, the non-active one is replaced and then the system is rebooted into the new one. Support for this pattern is already provided by the Civil Infrastructure Platform (CIP) project.However, there is one drawback: every update contains the whole rootfs and that is rather big, even if only minor changes (like a configuration change) are included. In this talk, Felix and Jan discuss alternative approaches to only transfer the delta, which makes these updates faster and cheaper, especially when downloading via mobile connections. This is evaluated based on the patterns provided in isar-cip-core and focuses on the practical difficulties and pitfalls (like reproducibility and compression).The goal hereby is to extend the CIP project by adding an easy-to-use and robust pre-integration of the delta update feature, among some guidelines on when delta updates are beneficial.Felix Moessbauer works as an embedded Linux researcher at the Linux Expert Center of Siemens Technology in Munich. He focuses on real-time Linux applications and the corresponding embedded Linux platforms. Article 9 on "Open Source Software" of this new "Federal Law on the Use of Electronic Means for the Fulfillment of Official Tasks" (EMBAG) is the result of 12 years of lobbying by the Swiss Parliamentary Group for Digital Sustainability.The law not only allows governments to publish open source code but actually defines the new "open by default". The presentation outlines the history of the legislative process and present the current open source activities of Swiss government agencies, also in the context of the ongoing political debate on digital sovereignty.Matthias Stürmer is professor at Bern University of Applied Sciences (BFH) and Head of the Institute for Public Sector Transformation in the BFH Business School. In addition, he is the founder and Head of the Research Center for Digital Sustainability at the Institute of Computer Science at the University of Bern. In the context of these two affiliations, he is involved in teaching, research, and consulting on digitalization topics such as digital sustainability, open source software, natural language processing (NLP), open data, linked data, open government, and ICT procurement.In 2009, Matthias completed his PhD at the Chair of Strategic Management and Innovation at ETH Zurich, where he investigated the collaboration between open source communities and technology companies. In this presentation, we will take you through our journey in the exploration of self-hosted Open Source LLMs, how we bring it up to scale and empower it with Inner Source software context.Fabio Huser is a Senior Key Expert at Siemens. This year, Siemens also co-founded Margo, a Linux Foundation project focused on Edge interoperability.Roger Meier established the Siemens internal coding platform https://sie.ag/3VBEnk and continues to develop the internal developer ecosystem besides doing operations together with his team.
