LRVG 8 vs 16 bit Challenge 2 - ResponseRoberts Retro-Gaming2026-09-20 | LRVG 8 vs 16 bit Challenge 2 - ResponseDwarf Fortress Classic, Sazirnanir, Episode 9Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-13 | What are those Dorfs up to now? The seige has recently ended. The military, inexperienced as they were, flung themselves off the walls in order to get at the gobbos. Stupid stupid stupid. There was many a death that day.
Also, the area was not as free of combatants as I thought and still more Dorfs managed to get themselves endeadened. Fortifications do not seem to be all they are cracked up to be. Cleaning up after the conflict is a big job that will take time, assuming the invaders give that time.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Action BikerRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-12 | In which I play "Action Biker", published in 1985 by Mastertronic. This is a game of guiding your motorbike around a play area that is large, but not as large as your first impressions would lead you to believe. It wraps in all directions. The goal is to pick up something like 40 items so that you can participate in a drag race. You would have to be an extremely dedicated player to get good enough at the game to retrieve all 40 items. There are some challenging sections of the play area to navigate!Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Star Trek (Sega)Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-11 | In which I play "Star Trek", published in 1983 by Sega, and written by Monti Rieman. This is an excellent conversion of the arcade game to the Atari computers. I haven't compared the game play features side-by-side, but I can say with confidence that it captures the essence of the original and makes it fun to play. I do recommend that you check this out.SNES Game Play, Q*Bert 3Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-10 | "Q*Bert 3" was released on the SNES in 1992, and was developed by Realtime Associates. I judge this to be a worthy entry in the Q*Bert pantheon. The psychedelic backgrounds are a bit much at times, but they can be turned off. There are a bunch of additions to the game, in terms of enemies and obstacles, and I think most of them are reasonable. I only ran into a couple of situations where I was stuck for a move. Most of my player losses were due to my own mistakes. Of course you can argue that all of them were due to my own mistakes, if I was good enough at the game. 😁Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Citadel WarriorRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-09 | In which I play "Citadel Warrior", published in 1983 by the English Software Company, and written by Jon Mayers and Ken Farnen, two guys with matching vowels in their surnames. It's a decent game, but it escalates like mad in difficulty between level 1 and 2, too steeply to be enjoyable, unfortunately.Minecraft Play, Episode 163Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-08 | Episode 163. Making a new portal in order to escape the Nether with my newly acquired dried ghasts, I emerge in a far-distant part of the overworld from my base; more than -13,000 blocks from the origin. In the process, I am awarded the "subspace bubble" achievement, which I am going to look up right now, as I type. Okay, it's the result of using the Nether to travel more than 7 km in the overworld. Neat!
After a tremendous amount of flying, I arrive at the base and plop the dried ghast into some water.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Radiation DumpRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-07 | In which I play "Radiation Dump", programmed by Matt Lopez, and released by K-Tek in 1983. It's a simple game of innocently dumping barrels of radiation into the ocean deep. In order to spare sea life, your barrels cannot make contact with the fishes on the way down. There's also a magnetic bomb that pursues the barrels trying to explode them, for some reason which is not explained.
There's not much depth here, if you see what I mean.Dwarf Fortress Classic, Sazirnanir, Episode 8Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-06 | What befalls the Dorfs in Episode 8?!? Watch and see.
Okay, I'll summarize a bit. Just a bit.
We join a big ol' invasion of Enemy Dorfs and Goblins already in progress. There was some wall climbing early on that caused some chaos inside the fortress grounds, but we contained that fairly quickly. The military has barely been assembled and is not far into their training. I'm hoping for some success with archers for a change.
A male duck, a drake, perished. Just FYI.Commodore 64 Game Play, Ghouls n GhostsRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-05 | "Ghouls 'n Ghosts" was published in 1989 by US Gold, and programmed by Stephen Ruddy. First of all, let me say to myself, "Nice hair." Oh well. I'm not used to having short hair again. It's quite challenging. I'd say that it's harder than the arcade game. I do like it though.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Tetris (by Eric Carr)Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-05 | In which I play "Tetris", written by Eric Carr for the "BASIC 10Liner Contest 2024". Somehow this game fits in 10 lines of BASIC. I have no idea how this is possible. This is an amazing version of Tetris, which plays very much like the NES version of the game that so many people are familiar with.
You can check the game out of itch.io and download it if you want to try it.
bunsen.itch.io/tetris-atari-8-bit-by-eric-carrAtari 8-Bit Game Play, Fighter PilotRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-04 | In which I play "Fighter Pilot", from Interceptor Software in 1983, it was written by J. Horn. The game is basically a shooting gallery where you try to take out as many enemy fighters over your air base as you can. It's also an ammunition management game, where you are rewarded for accuracy.
It's not bad. It's not great. It's okay though. 🙂SNES Game Play, Mega Man XRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-03 | A continuation of the classic Mega Man games, "Mega Man X" seems to be a worth successor. I had fun with it, anyway. 🙂 It was published in 1993 by Capcom.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, River RescueRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-02 | In which I play "River Rescue", published by Thorn EMI in 1982, and written by Kevin Buckner. This is a fun game which is mostly a fast horizontal shooter. You also are trying to pick up "Safarians" in need of a ride out of the jungle. It's fast and a bit frenetic, but once you get used to that, there's fun to be had.Minecraft Play, Episode 162Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-10-01 | Episode 162! Still looking for a dessicated Ghast spore thing. I'm pretty sure the key is going to be locating a part of the Nether that I was not close enough to in past play sessions to have the blocks generated.
Spoiler...success is mine.
I also find some interesting structures that will merit exploration in the future.ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I PlaythroughRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-30 | Here it is! The culmination of my "Danterrifik I" series, a complete play-through of the game. Will there be a "Danterrifik II" series? Probably. Let's not get ahead of ourselves though. 😁Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Flying AceRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-30 | In which I play "Flying Ace", a 1982 game published by Avalon Hill, and programmed by Bill Hood. This is a simple game of controlling a plane and shooting down enemy planes, ground vehicles, and gunners, while avoiding being shot too many times and eventually landing your plane. It's pretty straightforward, and is a bit of good fun.Dwarf Fortress Classic, Sazirnanir, Episode 7Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-29 | Episode 7 finds the fortress beset by an Ettin. Actually, as wicked and gigantic creatures go, Ettin aren't bad. They're nowhere near as dangerous as a were-earthworm.
After the defeat of the Ettin, I direct the dorfs to start building a hospital, and then another invasion arrives. Trolls and goblins and beak dogs, oh my! The dorfs aren't in any position to repel a siege, so the strategy employed is "wait". Sophisticated, I know. Then a corrupted Dwarven Hammer Lord shows up and single-handedly slaughters almost the entire invasionary force. 🤯Commodore 64 Game Play, GhoulsRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-28 | Inspired by a recent Mamemeister Sunday Stream, I decided to play "Ghouls". It's a damnably hard game. I do not succeed in getting past level 1. 😭 It was published in 1984 by Micro Power and programmed / converted by Mike Chilton.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, FirefleetRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-28 | In which I play "Firefleet", published by the English Software Company in 1983, and programmed by M.D. Caballero. This is a vertical descent shooting game, along the lines of "Caverns of Mars". Very much like that, actually. The graphics are descent, as are the sound effect and controls. Sadly, the difficulty is a bit extreme. It doesn't feel out of reach, but some difficulty setting options would have been most welcome.ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 18Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-27 | This is it, the completion of level 25 aka Hell.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, InvasionRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-27 | In which I play "Invasion", published by Bulldog Software in 1987 and written by Paul D. Marshall. This is a strategy war game, and I didn't really manage to wrap my head around it even though I did play for quite awhile. The manual really wasn't all that much help. I suspect it would have been the sort of thing I would have gotten into back in the day if I had bought it.SNES Game Play, Joe & MacRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-26 | "Joe & Mac" is a Data East game from 1991. The graphics are pretty good, especially the bosses. Other than that, the game is on the weak side. It's a beat-em-up / shoot-em-up with a variety of weapons at the player's disposal. Controls aren't great, collision detection isn't great, and heaven help you if you resume without any access to a powered up weapon. I suspect the two-player game, which is simultaneous, might be better.ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 17Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-25 | Episode 17 is all about me playing level 24.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Professional RouletteRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-25 | In which I play "Professional Roulette", published in 1984 by Merlin's Software, and programmed by Merlin Owens. This is a competent roulette simulation. I like the way the ball and wheel are visualized at the bottom of the screen.Minecraft Play, Episode 161Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-24 | I encounter a Bastion Remnant in the Nether the likes of which I have never seen before. Also, I don't find any ghast spores. *sigh*ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 16Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-23 | Level 23. That's it.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, LabyrintheRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-23 | In which I play "Labyrinthe", presumably out of France, based on the name and the labeling of the start and finish of the maze. There isn't much information available about this one. It was written by Pierre Faller.
The game is an extensive labyrinth. I don't feel like I got especially close to completing it.Dwarf Fortress Classic, Sazirnanir, Episode 6Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-22 | Barracks! That seems like a good idea. To outfit the military, smelting of iron and smithing of iron are fairly critical. Laying out quarters for nobles. Wow, I'm ambitious in this one.Commodore 64 Game Play, Moon CrestaRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-21 | Released in 1985 by Incentive Software, this is a faithful rendition of the arcade classic for the C64. It is quite nicely done.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Savage PondRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-21 | In which I play "Savage Pond", published by Starcade Software in 1983 and written by Gwyll Jones. This is an arcade-style game of survival in a truly savage pond. You play as a tadpole. Eat amoeba to grow, avoid the deadly hydra at the bottom of the pond, eat dragonfly eggs before they hatch, and ever so much more...most of which I did not see but I did read about in the manual. This is a difficult one, but it's a good game.ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 15Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-20 | In this one, I absolutely crush levels 20 and 21, which implies heavily that those 2 levels are much easier than average.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, QixRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-20 | In which I play "Qix", published by Atari in 1982. This is a decent conversion of the arcade game, but it has some odd differences which make it feel like the programmers didn't spend any time with the original. The sparks are very fast. The Qix looks more like a sprite that is being manipulated to resemble the disconnected lines of the original, but really doesn't behave much like it "should'. It's alright, but it's not excellent.ZX Spectrum Game Play, Boni 2 - Return to Bat HellRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-19 | "Boni 2 - Return to Bat Hell" is a bastarding hard game by my friend Steve of the excellent "Steve'sGamingPart2" and "StevesSpectrumZone" channels.ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 14Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-18 | Episode 14 consists of my eventual completion of level 19.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Kids on KeysRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-18 | In which I play "Kids on Keys", published in 1983 by Spinnaker software. This is a nice bit of educational software aimed at kids between the ages of 3 and 9. I'd lean toward the earlier end of that range as a recommendation, but it will depend on the kid. It teaches familiarity with the keyboard as well as recognizing objects and associating them with the words that are their names.Minecraft Play, Episode 160Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-17 | Episode one hundred sixty! How is this even possible? Continuing the search for dehydrated ghasts, I encounter many a fully armed and operational ghast. Skimming through the episode looking for something that can be a decent title card, it strikes me how very dim the Nether is. So dull. I do collect quite a bit of glowstone, so that's something. Still no ghast spores.ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 13Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-16 | Episode 13 consists of me playing level 18 and 19. Check the 15:20 mark for some accidental IRL hilarity. 😄Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Play-BackRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-16 | In which I play "Play-Back", published by Steve Derderian at some point in the last 50 years or so. Apparently this file was found on a pirate disk by Kay Savetz and released on Atari Mania. It is a nice re-creation of the electronic game Simon which was something I had as a kid and enjoyed very much.Dwarf Fortress Classic, Sazirnanir, Episode 5Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-15 | Episode 5 of this series of DF Classic videos. The fortress is Sazirnanir, and the dwarves are doughty. Doughty indeed.
The fortress is now a town with a significant population of Dorfs. Over a hundred and more are a-comin'! Finished goods for trading are the order of the day. What I don't really remember at this point is that trading finished goods is bugged in this version and doesn't really work. Yay!
Bedrooms. Noble quarters. The making of a barracks. It's all so thrilling!
Then a were-mole comes. I hate were-creatures. It murders one poor fisher and then departs.Commodore 64 Game Play, 1943: The Battle of MidwayRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-14 | In this one, I play "1943: The Battle of Midway". This was developed by Tiertex and released by Capcom in 1987 in North America and 1988 in Europe, according to ... Lemon64, I think.
It's a decent game. It is also not very challenging. The special weapons are well done for an 8-bit home system, in my opinion. There are some very nice C64 conversions out there. I might mention that the play area on the screen is quite small, which is unfortunate. I zoomed in and cut out almost all of the unused screen area in this video.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, Candy FactoryRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-14 | In which I play "Candy Factory", published by Gebelli Software in 1982, and programmed by Eric Knopp. This is an enjoyable platform game with considerably similarity to things like Miner 2049er, Mr. Robot, Chuckie Egg, and the like. There are some unique elements, like the way the player character bounces around. It's a decent game and definitely worth a look.ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 12Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-13 | Episode 12 is all about levels 16 and 17. Mostly 17.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, RockfordRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-13 | In which I play "Rockford", published in 1988 by Mastertronic UK. This is very much a clone of Boulder Dash. I wonder how this didn't cause Mastertronic to be sued within an inch of their business going under. The game is decent enough, as you might expect out of a clone of a good game made by a competent programmer.Minecraft Play, Episode 159Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-12 | Episode 159! Even though I call it 160 at the beginning of the episode, it's actually 159. So there.
There's a new thing in the game. Friendly Ghasts. So, obviously that's to be aspired to, in whichever fashion it is accomplished.
To that end, I'm off to the Nether!ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 11Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-11 | In this one I fumble my way through levels 14 and 15.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, OutlawsRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-11 | In which I play "Outlaws", published in 1990 by Spectre Software and written by Milan Školuda. This is an enjoyable crosshair-shooter game. I think it's more suited to a younger audience, but I had some fun with it.No Mans Sky, Episode 57Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-10 | This is it, the ultimate episode of No Man's Sky. There's a chance I will come back to make another video or two in the future, but I really can't see it being any time soon. Enjoy the end of the series!ZX Spectrum Game Play, Danterrifik I, Episode 10Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-09 | In this episode I dramatically triumph over level 13.
That's it.Atari 8-Bit Game Play, KnockoutRoberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-09 | In which I play "Knockout", published by Avalon Hill and Sports Illustrated(?) in 1982. It was programmed by Bill Hood. As you can tell from the thumbnail, it's a boxing game. It's not terrible, but it's not great either.Dwarf Fortress Classic, Sazirnanir, Episode 4Roberts Retro-Gaming2025-09-08 | Good day! This is Sazirnanir aka Bridgerhyme. Walls have been built. Extensive walls! Because of demons and necromantically created creatures, dontcha know. Sarvesh is still with us after a number of rough years, and she's doing alright.
At almost 13 minutes, the enemy comes. Then ... they leave. Weird.
The topmost layer of caverns has been revealed and the shaft into them sealed. There are already too darn many nobles. Merchants come and are traded with forthwith.
