11-20 were very sloppy, but I'm happy to have completed my first run! 8:40.37
The vertical walljump at 0:14 is not necessary; I did it on accident, and it is the same speed as the normal strat. The normal strat can be seen in this video: youtu.be/7350wCNlIGU
I had to wait at the final door for a little bit so that the platform movement cycle lined up for the Bowser Jr. quick kill.
Potential improvements:
-maybe faster strat at 0:47 to tie the TAS?
-Bowser Jr. fight could have been a bit faster, but not enough for a 431

Notes on the run-
1-1: didn't crouch-slide off the bricks
1-2: went for 356, missed a jump, got high 354. Lost about a second
1-T: missed the door ground pound and double brick break. Lost like 3 seconds
5-1: no mistakes
5-2: messed up jumping onto the flagpole
5-3: no mistakes
5-GH: no mistakes. Accidentally did a frame-perfect midair shell jump, which makes this the third PB in a row that has one
8-1: no mistakes
8-2: no mistakes
8-T1: no mistakes. This is by far the hardest level in the run now that I'm doing the cycle skip
8-3: got hung up on a ledge for a little bit, otherwise fine
8-4: no mistakes
8-C: no mistakes. Dumbass red block crossed the bridge and lost like 3 seconds
8-5: had to slow down and hit the red block, and jumped too early on one of the koopas. Had to wait at the end to avoid fireworks
8-6: unoptimal in several places
8-7: no mistakes
8-8: jumped too far and had to do a quick left-right, and slow star grab
8-T2: no mistakes. Almost died at one part lol
8-BC: unoptimal in several places
Sorry for the audio cutting out at 12:00. That's a glitch with the emulator, and I fixed it by resetting (which lost 30 seconds)
Pretty good run. World 2 was really bad and I got bad RNG in some places, but other than that only some small mistakes.
In the low% category, mario is not allowed to collect any powerups, including stars. Since the shell is required for the secret exit in 1-T, you have to complete World 1 and use the cannon in World 2. Another consequence of playing with small mario only is that most levels are significantly more difficult.
Overall, this run was very good. My goal for this category was to have a deathless run with no major mistakes, so I am happy with this.
Comments on the run:
1-1: triple jump strat to avoid jumping up the staircase
1-2: not perfect, but 1-2 is hard to do completely optimally
1-T: this level is cycle-based, and I made the fastest cycle, called "TAS cycle". It's very difficult and saves 5 or 6 seconds.
1-4: good level, but bad overworld RNG. The red box took the long path between 1-A and 1-5, which loses about 2.5 seconds
1-5: hitting the red box in the beginning loses some time from bumping up on the ? box, but I do it to prevent the red box from going on another scenic road trip around World 1. I also bump up on a ? box later in the level on purpose, to line me up for the final bouncing section.
1-C: doing a very quick left-right when landing on the ropes allows mario to stay at full speed
2-1: I do some quick left-rights to get over the pokeys. If I slow down too much, I'll get fireworks
2-2: I scroll the screen so lakitu doesn't hit me with a spiny. Also I jumped too far and bumped on a brick, which lost some time
2-3: very good. 2-3 is hard to do completely optimally, and my only mistakes were not getting ahead of the water during the flooding section, and missing the walljump off the exit pipe
2-A: letting go of the d-pad while jumping off a spinner keeps mario at full speed. I get the star coin and slow down to avoid fireworks
5-1: slow down at the end to avoid fireworks
5-2: I scroll the screen so I don't have to wait for the piranha plants to get back into their pipes
5-3: I jump as soon as the level starts because mario accelerates faster in air than on ice. It's possible to get a 267 if the level is done perfectly, but I bumped against a wall and had to wait for 265
5-GH: I was too slow on the staircase section, so I couldn't do the fastest way of climbing the vine. What I did is a probably second or two slower
8-1: this level is very hard as small mario- if I slow down at all, or do any jumps differently than I did, the crows will be in (pretty much) random positions, and it's almost impossible to not get hit with all the enemies around
8-2: made a few mistakes- slow turnaround in the barrel room, missed a walljump in the falling room, and bonked on the switch in the next room
8-T1: the last part was a bit slow, but it's ok because this is one of the hardest levels in the run
8-3: my mashing isn't very fast and the movement was kind of slow in the vertical section, so lost a little bit of time
8-4: crouching when landing on platforms avoids pixel stops, which makes this level much less scary
8-C: it's possible to jump off one of the platforms early and save a bit of time, but it's risky
8-5: good. 8-5 is hard as small mario
8-6: I never learned the fastest way of doing the spiny section- I just wait for them. Can probably save like 5 seconds
8-7: for the double fire bro part, you can go without stopping and hope they don't give you bad RNG and kill you, so I just play it safe. I messed up the next section pretty badly though. If you're quick enough, you can jump up to the moving platforms in time. I had to wait and lost a lot of time
8-8: this is BY FAR the hardest level to do quickly in low%. To be fast you need to get good RNG, and play the level risky. I got bad RNG and played it safe, which was about 10 seconds slower than optimal
8-T2: it's possible to do the autoscroller skip like in any%, but it only saves like 1 second. Also I did the bowser jr. fight safe, which loses about 4 seconds.
8-BC: played the final castle safe and lost about 5 seconds
Very, very good run. RNG was about as good as I could ask for, and the only big execution mistakes were ~4-5 seconds in 5-Ghost House and ~2-3 seconds in 8-7, with a few smaller mistakes scattered around.
Throughout the run, you'll see me jumping around a lot and bouncing off enemies while in the shell. Normal running speed is 3.0 pixels/frame and sliding in the shell is 2.75 px/fr (~8% slower), so I try to stay out of the shell as much as possible to go fast. Bouncing on enemies is one way to stay out of the shell, but there is also a glitch(?) I use to stay at full speed: if you jump within the first few frames of landing on the ground, Mario does a double/triple jump and stays at full speed. Good example of both of these at 15:45 to 15:55.

5-GH: big mistake. You can't grab onto a vine while moving upward, and I whiffed it pretty hard
8-1: no mistakes
8-2: got the awesome trick in the second room where you can hit the switch without stopping. Unfortunately the water strider guy trolled me in the next room, had to slow down a bit
8-T1: got a bad pixel stop, just barely made the cycle. Rest of the level was good
8-3: bad pipe entrance at the end, doesn't lose much time though
8-4: no mistakes
8-C: no mistakes
8-5: no mistakes
8-6: no mistakes. Sorry the video was laggy- watch 8-6 in my old pb if you want to see how it's done
8-7: missed the second koopa bounce, lost 2-3 seconds. Rest was fine
8-8: no mistakes
8-T2: no mistakes. Did the autoscroller skip which only saves ~8 seconds
8-BC: very happy I only lost 0.3 seconds; the BC in my old pb was pretty much perfect
1-1: +1 FR vs. WR
1-2: +0 FR vs. WR
4-1: +0 FR vs. WR
4-2: +3 FR vs. WR
8-1: +4 seconds

Biggest time loss was getting the absolute worst possible overworld RNG in the second half of world 8. Literally 1 in 2048 chance, and lost more than 10 seconds... :^|
Two things in general:
-landing on the flagpole backwards skips the animation of mario spinning around. Saves 5 seconds throughout the run
-normal running speed is 3 pixels/frame and blue shell spinning speed is 2.75 pixels/frame (~90% speed) so I try to minimize the amount of time I'm spinning in the shell. You'll see me jumping around a lot and bouncing on enemies. I also use a glitch(?) that if you jump within the first few frames of landing, the double jump animation overrides the shell spinning animation and you keep all your speed. example at 13:25
Notes on the run:
1-1: no staircase jump
1-2: okay, messed up in the beginning and had to wait for the box
1-F: some sloppy movement in 1st room
5-1: very sloppy movement, had to wait for the snowball to pass
5-2: bonked on the short pipe jump
5-3: using my consistent setup for high 265
5-G:
-if you bounce off the broozer on the staircase in the right way, you can load the higher broozer earlier and it will break the blocks earlier. I'll do an IL soon probably
-missed the ground pound
-setup in the elevator to get in the door as soon as possible. Doesn't save a lot of time but looks cool
8-1: fine
8-2: got stuck under water bug and had to wait
8-F: slower (but much safer) bowser jr. kill
8-3: tfw you lose time on the easiest level :(
8-4: I keep shell until 8-8 in this route
8-C: fine
8-5: bonked on ? box
8-6: very good, this is a hard level to do perfectly
8-7: sloppiness everywhere
8-8: usually I damage boost to lose the shell and get the star, but I accidentally got hit twice
8-F2:
-backup strat because I got hit twice in 8-8
-triple jump during autoscroller skip to get enough height that I only need 1 walljump, not 3
8-Bowser: pretty clean
