It was here that two wagon drivers, William Ballinger and John Henry, stumbled upon a rich deposit of silver ore while searching for their grazing oxen. Their discovery would soon transform this arid basin into the Ward Mining District, and the once-desolate land would give rise to a vibrant community known as the town of Ward. In 1876, the six beehive-shaped Ward Charcoal Ovens were constructed to supply the district’s smelters with charcoal. Built of native volcanic rock, each oven stood 30 feet high and could contain 35 cords of pinyon pine, which was carefully stacked and ignited to create high-quality charcoal.
