Cass Brostad - Everything Everything BE LIE ALL 2012-07-24 | Cass's manger texted me one morning saying "Hey you should do a video with this girl, she's like a female Tom Waits" and boy was I excited. I immediately replied "when!?" I was so intrigued with mystery, Tom Waits was about as masculine a man I could think of, so what would his female counterpart sound like exactly? So we set up a time and sometime last week I strolled over to Cass's apartment. Normally I'm quite familiar with the musicians I do videos for but upon going over to film I realized I'd never taken the time to listen to her music. This made me nervous but also excited about the spontaneity that was about to take place.Immediately I was struck by Cass's exuberant personality. Always a smile on her face, her indistinguishable laugh echoing through the empty living room we all sat in, at first glance she was a bubbly girl in a dress with a guitar. I couldn't exactly picture Tom Waits any longer.As we both got to know each other a little better, she started to play. "Are you filming" she asked, as they always do, "Whenever you're ready" I replied peering through the glass of my camera. And suddenly the person I'd been getting to know for the past twenty minutes had disappeared completely. Within seconds I was speechless, the honesty in which Cass writes with is both beautifully uncomfortable and infinitely relate-able. I did not see this coming I thought to myself. She told me that there is a part of her that only ever gets express through music, a part not many get to see outside of dive bars and small stages in the back corners of clubs on sixth street. The shift between these two people was so mesmerizing to me though; it almost felt like two completely different people.But rest assured both are Cass Brostad and it's not a gimmick. It's old fashion honesty looking you dead in the face. And with a background in creative writing its no wonder her lyrics are so rich with breathtaking imagery and memorable melodies.Needless to say with lyrics like "Is it my fault I was born to hard to hold, and you with your teeth made of concrete and bone, when I see you smiling it reminds me were all, all alone" I was caught in the haunting of the room and was reveling in the experience. Then I thought about Tom Waits and finally saw the similarity. Just like Tom Waits, Cass has a way of revealing her heart rather than just telling you, she makes you see her struggles clearly through the her distinct voice.After we were done Cass even broke out a few of her favorite Wait's classics for me. Mockingbird Loyals - Trashing the Home Town BE LIE ALL 2012-07-24 | We took to the porch in the backyard with the tin roof and freshly trimmed grass. We had our location for the shoot but first thing was first, "let's grab some beers, what do you guys want?" shouted someone and before I knew it we were all cracking open a few before the songs started. It seemed more like a party than a music video shoot but that's the essence of Mockingbird Loyals: They like to have fun, but when it's time to play you can tell immediately that the music is finely crafted to be something beautiful but impassioned at the same time. With a mixture of punk rock and folk tunes this quartet of musicians from all around the country met in Texas and here they were in a backyard in Austin on a porch with a tin roof, drinking beers and playing music.I'm not sure what town they're all singing about in 'Trashing the Home Town' since they all grew up far from each other and seemed to collectively move around quite a bit as kids but I know two things for sure, one, the town spoken of sounds beautiful especially with the help from Mary Beth's haunting howls on cello and the sweet southern harmonies of Liz Gilbert and two, that town sure as hell doesn't want them back.Check out more Mockingbird Loyals here: facebook.com/pages/Mockingbird-Loyals/148488075250943Shot on a Canon 60D in East Austin, Texas. Christy Hays - Quiet Kind BE LIE ALL 2012-07-24 | The ride up to the Pedernales River was a good 40 minutes outside Austin, but it was a beautiful drive through the Texas hill country. We landed at the river and hiked another ten minutes up river to get away from the tourists swimming. We found an opening in the river enclosed by trees and decided to start here. Christy jumped in first, the rocks were slimy and often dislodged under your weight but it was the perfect place to listen. I quickly learned Christy's music is the type of music that even when you could be listening to her sing, in a tiny bar in the middle of the city in Austin Texas, you can close your eyes and swear you're knee deep in the Pedernales River letting the water rush by and the music wash over. It has a power to it that not many can cultivate. As she slung her guitar over her shoulder and started playing her song "Quiet Kind" she told me she doesn't often write song about herself but this song was indeed. Sometimes I have to disagree, I am almost certain her words are pertaining to my life, but then I remind myself the power of great songwriting and remember I'm most likely not alone in that feeling.She played and I listened, the frogs chimed in in the background, the river continued to pour around us while the sun beamed down and her words echoed off the trees.
