COVENTRY CAROL - 16th century English Carol (feat. recorders) Michael Lining Music 2022-12-21 | Coventry Carol is a lament for the children decreed to be massacred by Herod the Great during the time of the birth of Christ. The Massacre of the Innocents is referred to in Matthew's Gospel, 2:16-18 is is the fulfillment of the prophecy of Jeremiah 31:15. There is a scholarly debate on this subject of if this decree were actually carried out, with conservative sources maintaining that Matthew's gospel is literal and Herod did murder the children out of paranoia for the protection of his own throne. Herod also murdered members of his own family to protect his throne. An angel appeared to Joseph in a dream warning him to flee with Jesus to Egypt for protection away from Herod until he died. While this is a sad and morbid text, one cannot imagine the fear, terror and sadness the mothers of these innocent children would have felt as the decree were read and presumably carried out. Musically, the melody and harmonic structure reflects the lament and alternates between minor and picardy third major cadences at the end of the verses, possibly indicative of the peace and healing Christ would bring to the world and to the hearts of the grieving mothers through his birth, life, death, and resurrection. This Christmas, may the light, love, hope, peace, joy, and healing of Christ touch the hearts of all those who grieve. Its roots are ancient, tracing back to the fourth century, and the hymn’s cryptic lyrics summon the singer to take part in the Incarnation and experience the sense of going into the Holy of Holies.Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence is based on the Prayer of the Cherubic Hymn, which is found within the Liturgy of Saint James. The original hymn was used to prepare members of the church for the practice of communion. In those ancient days, communion was taken with extreme sincerity, for the people believed Christ’s body was truly present in the form of bread and wine. [Michael's Note: I am not Catholic and do not believe in transubstantiation, and interpret this hymn text as the body and blood being simply representative of Christ body and blood like most Baptists would.] Spiritual preparation was certainly needed before partaking, and this is where the hymn found its purpose. Prior to the singing of the hymn, the following would be said to give further meaning to it:“We remember the sky, the earth and the sea, the sun and the moon, the stars and all creation both rational and irrational, the angels and archangels, powers, mights, dominations, principalities, thrones, the many-eyed Cherubim who say those words of David: ‘Praise the Lord with me.’ We remember the Seraphim, whom Isaias saw in spirit standing around the throne of God, who with two wings cover their faces, with two their feet and with two fly; who say: ‘Holy, holy, holy, Lord of Sabaoth.’ We also say these divine words of the Seraphim, so as to take part in the hymns of the heavenly host.”The Oxford Movement, a period when ancient Christian texts were translated from Greek and Latin to English, is when the hymn was brought into the modern age. Modern times have changed how we view the Christian faith. It is less somber, as people see the religion as a freedom from sorrow. Freedom and joy are certainly important aspects within Christianity, but it is still vital to remember the weight of the burden Christ took on for us. (Spiritual); [The Seekers] A Capella Hymn Michael Lining Music 2022-08-09 | Here is an African American Spiritual that was most likely originally sung by slaves in the north of the USA. This arrangement is based on a version popularized by The Seekers, an Australian Folk/Gospel band. Lead singer Judith Durham recently passed away. This spiritual has a mournful but hopeful element to it, using the imagery of Judgment day coming, presumably the unsaved white slave-owners weeping for the rocks and mountains, and a shout of victory going up as the faithful are delivered from their earthly bonds to spend freedom in Heaven for eternity. "Scholars have subjected the origins of African American spirituals to considerable speculation. Traditional hymnology places stress on a particular author or composer as the point of origin. Eileen Southern (1920–2002), a pioneering musicologist in African American music, offers further origin classifications. She examines the background of spirituals in three areas: “the time of origin, the place of origin, and the manner of origin” (Southern, 1972, p. 8). For traditional hymnological scholarship, this is a helpful clarification.Southern credits A Collection of Spiritual Songs and Hymns Selected from Various Authors (Philadelphia, 1801) by Richard Allen (1760–1831) for the inspiration behind this spiritual. Allen was the first bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, the first independent African American denomination. He observed that African Americans in Philadelphia were creating a category of congregational songs beyond those composed by the traditional British hymnodists of the day, especially eighteenth-century hymnwriters John Newton, Isaac Watts, and Charles Wesley. This collection may be the first one to distinguish between hymns and spiritual songs in the African American context (Southern, 1972, p. 12). These “spiritual songs”—later spirituals—often employed call-response forms of performance and incorporated refrains. The text is trinitarian in theme, but not in structure.Reginald Heber (b. Malpas, Cheshire, England, 1783; d. Trichinopoly, India, 1826) wrote the text for Trinity Sunday, the day for which lectionary in the Church of England's Book of Common Prayer prescribes the reading of Revelation 4. It was first published in the third edition (1826) of A Selection of Psalms and Hymns for the Parish Church of Banbury and was also published posthumously in Heber's Hymns Written and Adapted to the Weekly Church Services of the Year (1827). The unusual single rhyme (all on the "ee" sound) and the uneven number of syllables in some lines have not detracted from the hymn's popularity.Educated at Brasenose College, Oxford, Heber was ordained in the Church of England in 1807. He first served his family's parish in Hodnet, Shropshire (1807-1823), and in 1823 his dream of being a missionary was fulfilled when he was appointed bishop of Calcutta. He worked and traveled ceaselessly until his sudden death in 1826. Heber began writing hymns partly because of his dissatisfaction with the poor psalm singing in his congregation and partly because he was influenced by the vital hymn singing among Methodists and Baptists. Born at Trenton, NJ, she began teaching Sunday school at age 13 in the Methodist Episcopal Church. She married Henry B James, and they had four children: Joseph, Mary, Ann, and Charles.. She became a prominent figure in the Wesleyan Holiness movement of the early 1800s, assisting Phoebe Palmer (also a hymnist) and often leading meetings at Ocean Grove, NJ, and elsewhere. She wrote articles that appeared in the “Guide to holiness”, “The New York Christian advocate”, “The contributor”, “The Christian witness:, “The Christian woman”, “The Christian standard”, and the “Ocean Grove record”. She wrote a biography of Edmund J Yard entitled, “The soul winner” (1883). She strived to live a life as close to Christ as possible. She died in New York City."
