Jesus made an astonishing claim that has really helped me make more sense of the Old Testament...
"You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me"
Get that?
The scriptures (which at the time, was ONLY the Old Testament) bears witness to Jesus!

That often, God teaches through CONTRAST
That is to say... that the main point is often the OPPOSITE of what the narrative suggests
Here's a great example
Think of the parable of the "unrighteous judge" (Luke 18)
Story is told of an unrighteous judge who doesn't care for about God or what people think...
A woman is wronged and pleads for help
The judge IGNORES her.
But... this widow is PERSISTENT
Some think that this was meant to reflect God...
and I guess it was... through CONTRAST
Here's how Jesus summarizes that story:
"Will not God bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?”How can you have the assurance of salvation?Justin Khoe2024-02-13 | Let's not let theological constructs get in the way of the plain reading of ScripturePrayer for PastorsJustin Khoe2024-02-11 | Pray for your leaders yall!God Cant be in the Presence of sin (LIES)Justin Khoe2024-02-11 | Why make this video?
I have met too many people traumatized by this rhetoric...
"God cannot be in the presence of sin"
While I'm guessing people say this in the hopes that those around them might change their foolish behavior (which, side note, yes, stop living foolishly)...
... it doesn't actually help anyone who is a slave to sin
If one who is enslaved to sin believes that God abandons them while theyre trapped in sin... how do you expect them to work their way out of slavery?
It literally doesn't work like that!!!What if God wants you to do less, not more?Justin Khoe2024-02-07 | What if God wants you to do less, not more?Assurance of salvationJustin Khoe2024-02-04 | How do you have assurance?
Simple, through Jesus.
"And this is the testimony, that God gave us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life. I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life."SteadfastJustin Khoe2024-02-03 | Check this out 👇🏽
Psalms 107 shares this line several times... which means it's REALLY important (v6, v13, v19, v28)
"Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he delivered them from their distress."
The chapter basically goes like this...
Israel screwed up They cried to the Lord He delivered them (repeat ad nauseam)
Here's how the chapter concludes
"Whoever is wise, let him attend to these things; let them consider the steadfast love of the LORD."
His love is... STEADFASTJesus is not your personal lord and saviorJustin Khoe2024-02-02 | "It is not good that man should be alone"

I didn't always have clarity on what the "gospel" was...
Well, not exactly true... I knew the "right" answer
1 Corinthians 15 - The death, burial, and subsequent resurrection of Jesus... duh!
But I didn't know why that mattered.
And so, instead, I preached about how we are meant to live in light of Jesus dying and living again
My emphasis was all about the right way to live in response to the "gospel"
And that's cool, but...
I now know this
➡️ our RESPONSE to the gospel is NOT the gospel
our response is important... but it is NOT the gospel

a number of years ago, I was completely burnt out
here's what I learned (and it took a few years)
i found out that my identity and security as a child of God was built on the wrong foundation
rather than accepting the truth about what God said about me, I thought I had to earn it
my standing as a child of God was predicated on my behaviour
perform well and I had the feeling of security
but when my performance dipped... i was in jepordy
this eventually became a weight I couldn't bear
and then i heard the gospel
i learned what it looked like to practically lay my burdens down at His feet and what true Rest looked like
let me be real with you
life has gotten harder in many ways -- the demands have only increased
but
i still have peace, i still have that rest
because i have a firm foundation. his name is Jesus

Frustration is often a byproduct of an unmet expectation...
But here's the important question...
What if our expectations are UNJUSTIFIED?
In other words, what if the expectations we place on how God will work are simply false?
Scripture says God's ways are "higher" than our ways, and His thoughts are "higher" than ours...
Which is to say that God might see a BETTER solution than the ones we see!
So the primary spot for reflection is this -- do you trust God even when you don't know the why?
Would you be willing to lean into His love for you and have faith that He's working things our for your good?
Could that alleviate your frustration?

It doesn't mean that you're doing anything wrong... It doesn't mean that God has forsaken you... It doesn't make you a second rate believer
It just means that you're learning!
And sometimes learning takes time.
The good news, is that you're not learning alone!
You have a Teacher... and He is patientBlasphemy against the Holy SpiritJustin Khoe2024-01-07 | Something I learned while studying this passage a bit more 👇🏽
Jesus makes reference to a light not being hid under a bushel
Normally, we teach that this is in reference to evangelising or living a "good christian life" so that others can bear witness to the power of God
And cool, this is a legitimate interpretation/ application of this passage (if you read it in the other gospel accounts)
But
The way Mark positions this parable (Mark 4:21-25) is NOT about you or I 😱
It's about Jesus
Here's the context:
Jesus teaches in parables ➡️ The disciples don't get it ➡️ Jesus teaches them.
In other words, Jesus' words are the light being referred to in this parable!
And he intends for us to understand them! (the intention was for his light to shine)
Hence the conclusion of this passage:
“Pay close attention to what you hear. The closer you listen, the more understanding you will be given—and you will receive even more. To those who listen to my teaching, more understanding will be given."
Was I the only one caught off guard by that?!Struggling with faith?Justin Khoe2024-01-06 | Listen carefully...
I'm not saying that lack of faith is the end goal... or that you shouldn't grow in your trust...
... I am saying that if you're not there yet... God is patient
The testimony of Scripture is exactly this. God meets people where they are at.
So, know that God will continue working on your behalf... even if you presently struggle with faith

in this most recent episode, he asked one question over and over in a few different ways and I thought it was brilliant!
the question was some version of this, "did that work?"
and over the hundreds of hours i've sunk into this show... there's two things that seem ABUNDANTLY clear
1. theres a whole host of ways to approach life that DON'T work 2. the gospel DOES work
so... if you're like is going great so far and you don't see a need for Jesus, that's fine. I truly hope things continue working out for you!

That our duty is to "die daily?"
Find that passage in your Bible. Read it through in a few different versions.
Here's what you may notice...
That is has nothing to do with "dying daily"
Paul was talking about how every day he was being persecuted for preaching the gospel
He was talking about how every single day he was facing death and danger
Let me offer something...
The gospel is NOT about you dying daily... it's about the one death that He died
The text literally says that He died, "once for all."
Instead of emphasizing a single phrase out of context... let's emphasize the sacrifice of Christ and what it has accomplished for us!Morning Routine as a New ParentJustin Khoe2023-12-13 | Something that we've found is that a good morning routine really sets the stage for the day.
