Alfie and Rosies Story of Survival International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-06-01 | A story of survival and hope this #throwbackthursday…Alfie and Rosie were once hidden in the dark, locked away behind large wooden barn doors and heavy metal chains. They would spend their days frantically pacing up and down, clawing at the walls in a desperate attempt for freedom. Their frenzied digging was threatening to bring the building crashing down on them! These cubs had lost their mother after being poached by hunters, and had wandered close to a military base in search of food. The soldiers took pity on them and gave them food and water, before entrusting them to a local man who promised to release the bears back into the countryside.Instead, the man locked the cubs inside a derelict building, with no food or water in sight. Just pure darkness. However, in 2019, thanks to a rescue mission organized and orchestrated by our partners, FPWC, and supported by YOU, these two beautiful cubs were given the chance of a new life. They were taken to the rescue center in the Armenian mountains, and have been receiving love and specialist care ever since!They now spend their days enjoying enrichment activities such as pools and wobble trees, whilst devouring all the fruit they can get their paws on. A life that was once filled with darkness, now brighter than ever before! Thank you to everyone that supports this lifesaving rescue project in Armenia. This would not have been possible without YOU!

Locals had reported the presence of the bear, leading to their immediate response. The scene that met them was heartbreaking; the snare had cruelly tightened around Nanjung’s paw, inflicting severe damage and necessitating an amputation.In the aftermath of the operation, Nanjung spent a crucial six weeks under the expert care of YIARI. Their unwavering attention ensured his proper healing and before long, Nanjung was deemed fit to return to his natural environment!Thanks to a partnership with PT Ketapang Industri Forest, Nanjung could be released into a secure forest area, giving him the liberty to explore to his heart's content. We would like you to meet Owlbert! International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-05-11 | Meet Owlbert, a Pacific Screech owl (also known as Megascops cooperi). He was found all alone on the ground with a suspected injury, and was taken to our rescue center in Costa Rica for veterinary treatment. But don’t worry… his story has a happy ending! Owls are nocturnal creatures, using the moonlight to hunt for their dinner. However, younger owls are prone to the occasional stumble, and miss their intended target. This can leave them grounded, appearing injured to people passing by and also vulnerable to cat attacks. After a thorough veterinary check-up and 24 hours under watchful eyes, it turned out this beautiful owl was perfectly fine and was released back into the wild, ready to continue his nocturnal adventures! The NIGHTMARE Facing Howler Monkeys International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-04-14 | “It’s been my nightmare for the last six years,” and that nightmare continues… The plight of howler monkeys in Costa Rica due to the dangers posed by uninsulated power lines and transformers has recently been covered in a Daily Beast article by Noah Kirsch. Deforestation and uncontrolled development continue to drive the monkeys down to the ground or onto the power cables, which is not only a problem for the monkeys but also for public safety. Our veterinary director, Fran, who has been quoted in this article has been living with the devastating effects of wildlife electrocutions for many years and has voiced his concerns. While there has been some collaborative effort to implement reactive mitigation measures to alleviate the problem, it is clear that far more needs to be done. 2022 was the worst year on record for electrocutions. Our Stop The Shocks program has been running for many years, we work closely with government agencies, electric companies, other organizations and individuals. We are proud of what we have achieved together; however, this reactive approach will only get us so far. It is great that hotspots are identified and remedied but, we can’t keep up and we are still seeing more electrocutions than ever. A proactive approach is desperately needed, backed up with appropriate regulation and enforcement. It cannot be right that trees are cleared and unsafe electricity equipment is installed in precious forested areas without any scrutiny. We understand that development is a key part of the economy; however, this must be done sustainably and using a nature positive approach. What is currently happening is clearly at odds with Costa Rica’s green credentials. Without a more proactive, strategic, regulatory approach, we will always be playing catch-up with reactive mitigation measures. With continued collaboration and the will from all stakeholders to fix the problem, it is entirely solvable. We can then ensure a brighter future for the howler monkeys of Costa Rica.
This Slow Loris Will Melt Your Heart... International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-04-13 | Meet Apem, the brave Javan slow loris receiving a crucial procedure from our incredible partners YIARI! In February, this little warrior was entrusted to YIARI, by West Java BKSDA after they received him from the Bogor BKSDA. Sadly, Apem arrived with cut teeth and an infection , which led to severe inflammation in his teeth and gums. His condition was severe! But as you can see in this video, under the watchful eye of vet Indri Saptorini Apem has been receiving the love and care he deserves 💙Starting with antibiotics and anti-inflammatory meds, followed by a careful tooth extraction operation, he has been healing day by day!Though we would love to see Apem thriving in the wild, his missing teeth make it impossible, as they're crucial for both finding food and self-defence 🌳. However, despite this, YIARI will do everything they can to give Apem the best life possible at the rescue center! Bears Caught On Enclosure Cameras Before Hibernating International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-04-04 | Here’s a little sneak preview of what we are lucky enough to witness on enclosure cameras at the FPWC rescue center. This was captured before some of the bears were doing some final checks and preparing for hibernation a few months ago. 🐻Normally these cameras are purely used to keep an eye on the bears at all times for monitoring purposes, but we thought, why not share these beautiful and natural moments with you too. AMAZING UPDATE - Millie The Sloth Bear! International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-03-30 | AMAZING UPDATE ON MILLIE THE SLOTH BEAR! Who remembers Millie? Back in 2021, Millie was rescued by our partners, Wildlife SOS, after being caught in a snare for several days. She was found in a terrible condition, suffering from dehydration and a severely infected wound. It’s been a few months since posted about her in September, so on this #throwbackthursday we’re back with another exciting update! Millie has come a long way since her rescue. She can't return to the wild due to her injury and ongoing medical treatments, but she's living her best life at the Wildlife SOS rescue center in Bannerghatta, surrounded by a rich biodiversity of the Bannerghatta Biological Park and a habitat that closely resembles her natural forest home. This brave bear has grown close to a bear called Mithali in a neighboring enclosure. When they meet up, they spend time play-wrestling, climbing trees, and exploring enrichment activities together. Despite the loss of her limb, Millie has regained a lot of her athletic ability and can even climb trees for some afternoon naps! To aid her care, Millie is given multivitamins and liver supplements hidden within fruits and dates. The medicines often have to be stuffed deep within fruits, because if she notices their presence, she will become very fussy with her food! But the team are always up for the challenge of keeping Millie healthy and happy. Millie's journey may have been a difficult one, but your support and donations have helped her heal and find happiness again. Follow us for more updates on her progress! This Infant Monkey is VERY lucky to be alive! International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-03-15 | EVA’S AMAZING STORY OF SURVIVAL!This beautiful howler monkey, Eva, tragically became an orphan when her mother was killed by a dog in Santa Cruz, Costa Rica. She was incredibly lucky to survive the attack, sustaining only minor injuries!After arriving into our care, Eva joined ‘Mango Troop’, a group of infant howler monkeys that support each other throughout their rehab. Without a mother to look after her, the team stepped in and helped Eva learn everything she would need to survive in the wild, from foraging to climbing! Watch this video to learn what happened next! This beautiful species of duck is well-known for its distinctive high-pitched whistling call. Found across the Americas, they are easily recognisable by their black underbellies, chestnut plumage, and bright pink legs! But what really makes them stand out is their behavior - they're not shy at all! Black-bellied whistling ducks are often seen perching on tree branches, and they even nest in tree cavities instead of on the ground like most other ducks.Unfortunately, their gentle tendencies often bring them into contact with humans in built-up areas. Although snakes are typically considered fearsome, boa imperators tend to keep humans off the menu and prefer to eat mammals, birds and lizards. Salazar is currently awaiting a biopsy so our vets can assist her condition. Boa imperators, also known as common boas, are non-venomous and can grow up to 12 feet long. They're found in Central and South America and come in all sorts of interesting patterns, from bright reds to deep browns. Like other boa species, they are ‘crepuscular ambush predators’, which simply means they prefer to hunt during twilight hours. They also use constriction as a way to kill their prey. Little Edwins Story Could Have Ended Terribly... International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-02-17 | Edwin was tragically separated from his mother, and although he was eventually re-united with her, many other animals aren’t as lucky. Each and every day, we deal with tragic cases where wildlife have been electrocuted, hit by cars or brutally attacked; sometimes with fatal consequences.We are almost overwhelmed with the amount of injured wildlife arriving in our care this year, and although our vets are more than capable of delivering the expert care they need, our equipment is failing and needs to be replaced ASAP! Dramatic rescue of a Tamandua International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-02-16 | This tamandua may not have survived if it wasn’t for the swift actions of our rescue team and local energy provider, ICE! But despite the successful rescue operation, the team in Costa Rica now desperately need your help!As you can see, the specialist pole they used to get the tamandua down to safety wasn’t the most efficient means of rescue. With urban development in Costa Rica fragmenting wildlife habitat, situations like this are becoming more and more common as wildlife use power lines to cross built-up areas. Charlotte Has An Incredible Story Of Survival... International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-02-16 | Charlotte arrived at our center with horrific injuries. She had suffered bite marks, broken bones and an unimaginable amount of trauma. Using specialist medical equipment, our vets were able to perform emergency surgery and SAVE HER LIFE!In fact, Charlotte would eventually become strong enough to be released, but this story would have had a sad ending if it wasn’t for the equipment available to our vets at the time. Some of this equipment has since broken, and a large influx of injured wildlife has exuberated our need to replace them ASAP! So far this year, we have received nearly TWENTY howlers in need of our lifesaving support! That’s approx. one injured howler every other day! Two Baby Squirrels May Have Died Without These... International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-02-14 | Meet Scrat and Rocky, two rescued variegated squirrels who likely wouldn’t have survived without the medical support provided by our incubators. Worryingly, two of our incubators have recently broken, so we desperately need to replace them to give more infant animals that come into our care the chance of returning to the wild! – DONATE LINK IN COMMENTS!Tragedy struck for these two young squirrels when strong winds knocked their nest out of a tree. Despite our best efforts to return them to their mother, she never came back for them. We then decided to rush them into the center to start their journey to recovery. Our veterinary team gave them a complete check-up and it was determined that the best option was to stay in the new incubator, which provides warmth to young animals that aren't ready for the temperature outside just yet. We dare not imagine what would have happened if we didn’t have working incubators for Scrat and Rocky. With more than 100 different animals benefiting from these incubators every year, we cant stress how important it is that we raise the funds to buy a new incubator. Sleepy Bears Getting Ready For A LONG Sleep International Animal Rescue IAR 2023-02-08 | The bears (brrrs 🥶) in Armenia are feeling a little sleepy! 🐻😴As winter grips the Armenian countryside, the FPWC rescue center is a little bit quieter than usual. Instead of splashing in pools, bashing wobble trees or running around their large enclosures; bears are conserving their energy, packing on the fat, and getting ready for a long frosty slumber! When they emerge from their cosy dens in the spring and shake off the equivalent of a bear hangover (think Monday mornings but 10 times worse), they will stuff their furry faces with lots of nutritious food prepared in advance by the FPWC staff. They will then have free reign of their enclosures, with lots of enrichment activities available for them to enjoy!
