Gwen’s final scene with her dad in Across the Spider-Verse has some of the most intricate writing I’ve seen. There are layers and layers of subtext in the dialogue, the actions, the reactions, even before the main part of the scene begins. Then in Gwen’s emotional conversation with her dad, we see even more layers in the exploration of the two characters, their relationship, and how it relates to the main plot (despite the absence of Miguel, Miles, Peter B, Jess, Hobie, or any other main plot character). This scene deepens our understanding of the connection between spiderwoman and Captain Stacy, despite their differences, and shows us the powerfully efficient way they’ve chosen to illustrate it to us.

“Guidelines”, “parley”, “poppet”, “acquiesce to your request”, “savvy”, “best/worst pirate”... it goes on and on with this movie. The dialogue is so memorable, but really so QUOTABLE. Most quotable dialogue (think “Luke I am your father”) comes from iconic scenes, but Pirates of the Caribbean uses a cheat code. Jack, Elizabeth, Will, even Gibbs and Norrington are constantly quoting each other, fostering a movie-specific social culture of quotability. This is fun and witty and silly and it makes the audience want to join in as well.

Why do we like TRAGEDY if it makes us sad? The Last of Us and Arcane are two great examples of stories that end with a perfect implosion of every arc, and we love it, we enjoy every second of it, we specifically call these stories “BEAUTIFUL”. There’s a specific shape to these stories: Joel’s journey with Ellie falls apart in this inevitable symmetrical way that mixes love and violence, Jinx’s relationship with Vi and Silco explodes in a fiery inferno of hatred, grief, and empowerment. David is a MONSTER… but he’s not introduced as one. The Last of Us gives its audience about 15 reasons to seriously question our suspicion, and that feels wrong in a story like this. The Last of Us is all about man vs man, the world begs us to be suspicious! But with David, we’re shown a man who’s nice and helpful, who is honest even when he doesn’t have to be, who can’t possibly be our enemy -- and then it undermines ALL OF IT! This is Ellie failing to take on the protective roel of Joel, she’s too naive, she’s too inexperienced, too trusting, and she pays the price… by being forced to be Joel in a much darker way. She is forced to do whatever she needs to in order to survive, and waiting for her at the end of that road is David -- fear itself, Ellie’s ultimate nightmare.

Zombies barely appear in 7 episodes of The Last of Us (and are totally absent from 3 episodes). Why write a zombie apocalypse story if so much of it can be told without zombies? Truly great worldbuilding isn’t about fantasy elements like supernatural beings, it’s about crafting a dynamic environment for the characters that naturally begins to tell a story all on its own. The world of The Last of Us is a world of NECESSITY. Every character is forced to act in unnatural ways out of a need to survive. This is where we start to see the motif of zombie (in terms of mindlessness) expanding into the entire world of the story. In The Last of Us, even the non-zombies live like zombies: their lives dedicated to survival so completely that it destroys their humanity.

I did NOT like this character at first, and that was by design from the writers. They wrote an annoying bratty punk with peppy teen overconfidence and tired ol' teen rebellion. They even gave her a book of bad puns. But dropping an utterly average modern teenager in a grim post apocalyptic world immediately captures your attention. Despite her grating positivity and attitude, she's NORMAL. She's a taste of life before the apocalypse because she never experienced the horrors the older generation went through. But that alone doesn't cut it, the annoyingness needs to interact with the story elements: not just the plot and characters, but the overall idea the story is conveying. And that's where The Last of Us shines.

The cordyceps zombies of The Last of Us are such a cool and refreshing update on zombie tropes. Not only is it a rich new language that opens up new forms of expression (overgrown corpses, clickers, the kiss, etc), but it also opens up a dynamic interaction with the setting. With all the fungal growths and tentacles and mold covering zombie infested areas, the zombie worldbuilding element generates emotions and promises that permeate the entire narrative experience far beyond the actual physical zombies. But the most interesting aspect for me is that fungi are such a common part of our everyday experience, and the fictional fungi of The Last of Us impact our real life experience even outside the story.

Men in fiction are changing. Bill from The Last of Us episode 3 is a prime example, but the male characters in Arcane, Stranger Things, Knives Out, the Mandalorian, Logan, and even real people whose stories have become popularized in movies like Richard Williams in King Richard, Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge, and Elvis. But what's most interesting about this phenomenon is that the characters are still traditionally masculine overall, but through emphasis and de-emphasis and rearranging certain traits from our internal "lists" of what's masculine and what's not. The ways this is accomplished in both The Last of Us and Arcane are as precise as they are fascinating.

The Last of Us doesn’t open with Joel and Ellie, it doesn’t open with Joel and Sarah, it doesn’t even open with an exciting cordyceps psycho chasing us, no it scares us in a much more personal way. We begin in 1968 with an epidemiologist talking about the dangers of global pandemics, a topic we’re all too familiar with. We then switch to a different epidemiologist who destabilizes us by saying he’s not so concerned with the type of bacterial or viral pandemic. What?? Who is this ignoramus? Then he proceeds to bring up a possibility we didn’t even know enough to fear: a fungal pandemic, that can spread faster, that can turn us into mindless automatons, and that can’t be cured. This is all exposition, typically a “bad writing” thing to do, but in this case the exposition speaks so personally to what it knows is its audience’s experience and feelings that it’s beyond compelling.
Jayce’s dad, Caitlyn wants to return to Piltover, Vi’s passivity -- the Arcane writers went through many drafts and outlines that were discarded before the show eventually become the final product we all saw. Christian Linke shared notes of how he, Alex Yee, Amanda Overton, and the other Arcane writers structured and conceived of the story early on (most episode’s 1 and 6). The extreme dedication to clear and focused episode/arc structure is evident in their methods, and there’s so much to learn from as a writer.
Myth vs Ina (or Myth’s Bad Ending) is not just a MASTERCLASS in animation, it’s an incredible narrative to learn from. There are SO MANY GREAT storytelling decisions, from the efficiency of setup in Ame’s multiverse scene to the diverse styles of combat between Ina, Calli and Gura, to the groundbreaking meta-storytelling techniques involving the title and the release schedule. For a fan project, Mazumaro went over and above in putting care and precision into the structuring and detail of this narrative.

Who are the FIRE NA’VI?? James Cameron mentioned the ASH PEOPLE as antagonists of Avatar 3. For the first time, we’ll see evil Na’vi. What’s more, producer Jon Landau said that in Avatar 5, the story will take us to broken Earth, presumably to see the environmental disaster climate change has wreaked upon the home planet of humanity. Neytiri will be introduced to a morally complex picture of who the Sky People are. This gives me hope for the franchise. Despite the horrifically simplistic unobtainium and amrita (tulkun whale juice) of Avatar and Avatar Way of Water, this series could take a much more interesting turn in the next few years.

Arcane has a whole system for using HEIGHT. Not only with its setting (ie zaun / piltover), but with tons of scenes, Arcane communicates the feel of the scene or the positioning within its arc by using altitude. Characters RISE when they're on an upward trajectory (Vi ep1/ep5), they FALL when they're experiencing failure (Vi/Silco ep6, Jayce ep2), they're on level ground when they experience a moment that explores ambiguous potential (Viktor ep8, Silco/Jayce ep9).

Here are 5 ways of fixing Avatar 2. Spider and Quaritch need major upgrades in order to measure up to the complexity 3 more movies will demand. Jake Sully and Neytiri learn a lot this movie, but it’s all over the place. There’s no cohesion, nothing is integrated with each other. The “Way of Water” should be a clear theme that determines the success and failure of the Sully family, the life and death of Lo’ak and Neteyam, and the survival of the Metkayina people. If this movie becomes centered around fluidity and adaptability as a lesson to learn from water, all the plot and character arcs line up perfectly. Jake and Neytiri must learn from Kiri and Lo’ak that if they don’t adapt, they’ll suffer losses like Neteyam. Quaritch triumphs by adapting to the new circumstance of discovering this tool in the form of his son, and Spider goes too far with his fluidity, losing himself and leaving the Na’vi way.
Grayson lets Caitlyn win the shooting competition and Caitlyn kinda freaks out. She's only able to understand rule breaking in the context of corruption, which she's undoubtedly seen throughout her entire childhood in Piltover. Grayson introduces this idea that you can break rules for a higher purpose than self interest, but Caitlyn struggles with this idea, not just in this scene, but throughout the rest of the season. This is a pattern. Singed introduces Viktor to a complex idea of sacrifice that's hard to accept. The random mage introduces Jayce to magic as a force for good in the world, a philosophy whose dire consequences he continuously clashes with. Arcane's flashbacks don't show inspiring moments of growth, they show what the character will struggle with long term.
The best LoL cinematic in my opinion, Annie's backstory is a perfect lesson in TENSION. "Annie is just an evil girl, and that's it," said director RiotPastaBomb. She's just a simplistic trope, how you can you write a compelling story about a character like this? But the "evil child" trope denotes a tension: childhood innocence vs a monster that shouldn't exist. Children aren't old enough or capable enough to be evil, so we have a hard time believing this archetype can exist. Our mind is constantly trying to convince us that it's just a normal child, and that's EVERY SCENE in this short. Every story element tries to convince us this is just a normal little girl before throwing us into the horror of the monstrosity we can't believe is real. Mr Tibbers is designed to be just odd enough that we're suspicious. The use of dramatic irony with Annie's parents draw us into the narrative as participants trying to convince the characters and ourselves that there's something very very wrong with this girl.
Most iconic scene in the entire season, Wednesday’s dance is so great on so many levels. The pacing fits our shock that it’s actually happening, we get those couple moments before she suddenly turns it ALL THE WAY up. She also acts almost uncharacteristically playful with Tyler, but it’s in such a characteristic way, that we accept it as totally how she WOULD include him in her private fun. Her dance style isn’t just “dancing skeleton”, we get more nuance with various possessed and animal-like looks. The genuinely amateur look to it is also charmingly characteristic: it looks like a bunch of moves she came up with on her own just to have fun. So much great storytelling in such a concise form.

(SPOILER FREE AUDIO) Wednesday Addams, Lisbeth Salander, Marceline the Vampire Queen, Raven -- why do these dark girls become such fan favorites? Why is this trope/archetype so appealing that these characters become instant cultural icons? My theory can be split up into two main categories: these characters embody a common social empowerment fantasy and, from a writer's perspective, this trope provides strong and easily identifiable pathways for plot and character development. Not only do dark girls enable us to live out social daydreams through our identification with them, their inner fortitude is like a superpower, both admirable and interesting. They have strong identities and (often) unusual abilities, and always a cool style that permeates everything in their life (which opens up an intriguing discussion about gender).
