Many are too embarrassed to talk about the human frailties that require such care, a sad commentary on society's intolerance for such things. Often, it's our wives, mothers, fathers, siblings entering the last stages of life -- stages that can stretch ten years or more and often marked by diminished capacity or mobility or both.Some of our most prominent citizens can be found caring for family members or spelling professional caregivers. But, for all its nobility, personal and family caregiving is notoriously unheralded and badly underpaid. Even professionals suffer under the assumption that people who do such good works ought to just love the work right into the poor house. Professional caregivers struggle enough, but human services professionals responsible for compensating family members were, until a court order reversing them a short time ago, convinced that if you paid a living wage to a family caregiver, they'd rip off the state, and besides, it's a family member, after all. Why should they be paid to care for one of their own? Never mind the human and pocketbook costs that can devastate caregivers almost as much as their charges. Never mind the emotional and physical toll such continued concentrated care takes on -- not the patient, but the caregiver.Thanks to the efforts of both professionals and family personal care assistants, legislation is on the cusp of providing what the courts have already insisted must be done: adequate compensation and the ability to unionize. The White Racial Frame on TruthToTell Andy Driscoll 2011-11-16 | How deeply embedded in our personal, institutional and national cultures is the notion of racial superiority -- the very idea that, no matter what we say or do, people of color are just not quite what most of us are: white? This program takes the idea of white supremacy and white privilege one step further than we've ever gone before. We cannot excuse the present national ethos by saying things have gotten better or now that we have elected a president of African-American descent - or that we no longer embrace the slavery of Antebellum - or that we have passed a Civil Rights Act (about 400 years after the first settlements) - that we can say we no longer fit into what Professor Joe Feagin calls the White Racial Frame. We need only to look around and see how still segregated our housing patterns remain, how we still allocate our educational, job-producing and labor-organizing efforts in favor of a depleting white majority. We need only watch the disparities in health care access and the criminal justice system which itself has convicted and warehoused a disproportionate population of color to see how confining the white racial frame has been to progress toward American equality -- something present in our European roots countries but nowhere near as entrenched as the United States. Is there any hope for us? Much to mull over and talk about. That's what this year's Overcoming Racism Conference is about and that's what we'll look at on TruthToTell this week. Mindy Greiling characterizes the end of session negotiations, that largely cut out the legislature except for the leadership. "The Public couldn't track it, the media couldn't track it, and I couldn't track it." She gives the example of how the integration money was largely wiped out for the large cities, had a temporary restoration with an addition of one sentence, but it will be "eventually repurposed", by a task force appointed jointly by the governor and legislature. Mike Dean, President of Common Cause adds that there was almost no notice of what was in the bills. "Most were posted in less than 24 hours..." before they were voted on. Rich Neumeister, Open Government Advocate, thought that both parties did this at the end of session, but extremely upset of the public being locked out of the capitol, and the negotiations took place behind closed doors.
